MOVE TOWN TO GET RICH COAL DEPOSITS
PEKIN—The Japanese are moving a city in Menchuria because they are convinced that the coal under the town is worth more than the buildings.
The Punhun coal mines are the richest in Manchuria. The coal is so near the surface that shafts are not needed and the coal is dug out after the thin surface of earth is removed.
Punhun is almost a twin city to Hibbing, Minn., so far as the mining situation is concerned. The steel companies at Hibbling had to move most of the otwn to get at the iron ore. The mine operators obtained the right to take over the property on paying a just price to the owners.
Now Manchuria is the wild west for the Japanese and the pioneers there hold out for their rights. The property owners are not satisfied with the awards and they decline to move until they get more money.
Thus the proceedings have come to a deadlock though they will probably be opened this spring.
Japanese companies are already turning the coal into electricity at the mine and carrying the power to Muxden and other points by heavy cables.
Planos say moving men, are getting heavier.
