YANK MOVIE VIM STARTLES LONDON Seldom does the making of a motion picture make news of such importance that it is cabled across the ocean. But that is what happened when Maurice Tourneur and his Goldwyn company used Trafalgar Square, London, for scenes in "The Christian," Hall Caine's greatest story, which will be shown at the California theatre, for four days, beginning tomorrow. Here in the cabled account carried by the press associations: "Londoners returning home early Saturday morning enjoyed a demonstration of American film making that left them astounded at American enterprise and made them wonder how permission had been gotten to stage such a spectacle, because the mob scene was given in historic, revered Trafalgar Square. "From 1 o'clock until dawn Nelson's column was lit up by a fantastic blulah light which made falling rain look like snow, and threw garish shadows over the mob of 2,000. "The scene was being made for the film version of one of Hall Caine's novels, 'The Christian.' The hero, a clergyman, is bring mobbed. He has the crowd nearly pacified when a gang of ruffians hired by the villain incades the mob to raid the monument and drive the hero from London. "Onlookers realized by looking at this make-believe spectacle what it would mean if a real mob from East London ever gained control of the city during a revolution." VITAL VAWTERISMS The curse of the church is indifference. Some people are staying out of the church and going to hell because their neighbor's chickens get in their garden. They are saved or lost. They are not going to heaven or hell or someplace else. They are going to heaven or hell. There are church members who will worry a fellow to death to get him to take some patent medicine but who won't open their mouths to tell him about the Great PhyJesus never wrote a book, nor painted a picture, nor scultured a bust, nor invented a device, nor sounded forth a single scientific dictum. He was the Saviour only. When God commands it is not ours to reason why but to obey. When you get genuinely concerned about men's souls, you'll try to save them. At the services tonight, Evange-list Vawter will show some more pictures. Some people teach their children all the rules of etiquette but fail to teach them of Jesus.
