A Little Talk on Thrift R. W. Straus, American Society (for Thrift) No matter how humble your position, how small your earnings or how restricted the circumstances in which you find yourself, there is always the possibility of bettering your condition through thrift. Progress may seem slow at first, but persistence and determination will win in the end. There died recently in a New Jersey city a man whose life was an exemplification of the value of thrift as a means of rising from poverty and obscurity. For many years he had been one of the foremost manufacturers of the East. He had not only utilized his ability in the upbuilding of a great business, but he had become an art patron of note. Yet he began working at the age of ten in a Yorkshire cotton mill where he put in seventy-two hours a week at a weekly wage of thirty-two cents. By the time he was seventeen he had saved enough to pay his passage to America, and the Yorkshire firm where he had been employed made him a present of a five-pound note. His first job in this country brought him four dollars a week. But he saved, worked hard and gradually advanced. The story is not an unusual one, yet it illustrates thoroughly what can be accomplished through thrift. It was the practices of those early days of his career when it was necessary to practice the most rigid economies—when his savings grew penny by penny—that brought about the success that came to him in his later years and enabled him to enrich and enable the lives of others. When we gaze at a beautiful structure we are apt to pay little attention to the foundation. Often when we contemplate a successful life we think too little of the early struggles and hardships without which no man has ever really succeeded. Bear in mind it is not the amount of money one saves that counts as much in the long run as the Success Marks "Special Weeks" The pronounced success that has marked our "Special Weeks" so far in the new year has been gratifying, and it is our purpose to make each succeeding "Special Week" even more successful than those that have gone before. Concentrating, as we do in those "Special Weeks" on merchandise that is both timely and necessary, our patrons have the advantage of large selections from which to choose and special purchase prices. We are making these "Special Weeks" our predominent 1923 feature in all of our 371 Stores, and the large scale on which this is done increases the benefits to the patrons of each individual Store. Letters from People To the Plain Dealer—I beg to correct an error of our Cypress news editor. In which he stated that I, H. H. Covell spoke at the Farm Center meeting in favor of dairy inspection in Orange Co. I beg to state that I understood that an ordinance had been passed by our board of supervisors, that all dairys be inspected in Orange Co., by our county inspection be financed by an assessment of 50 cents per cow on all dairys in the county. I am absolutely opposed to any such ordinance on the ground that a large portion of the milk in Orange Co. is sold in Los Angeles, for which we have paid for our permit, and we are under the A. city inspection. And if the city of Santa Ana wants inspection of their dairy let Santa Ana city pay for such inspection. And I also second the motion that Cypress Center circulate a petition among their dairymen in protest against it. H. H. Covell. WUXTRA! CHRISTMAS CAPTURED BY JAPS TOKIO—It was a large Christmas—a large and luscious Christmas—in Japan. Santa Claus captured the country. He won without half trying. He carried Tokyo unanimously. He had a tremendous majority in every precinct in the empire, from tropical islands to frozen Hokkaido in the north. The Japanese are keen for holidays. They are natural-born merrymakers. The love to celebrate and have festivals. They have been flirting with Christmas for some time and last year they simply took it over wholeheartedly. They made it their very own. They put Christmas, and all its trimmings, onto their calendar. They adopted it with the same joyous hospitality they had previously shown to baseball, derby hats, soda-fountains, highway robberies and other appurtenances of western civilization. “Merry Christmas” postcards were on sale in every shop—and they wont like hot cakes. The Japanese newspapers were filled with Christmas adverts…but brought about the success that came to him in his later years and enabled him to enrich and enable the lives of others. When we gaze at a beautiful structure we are apt to pay little attention to the foundation. Often when we contemplate a successful life we think too little of the early struggles and hardships without which no man has ever really succeeded. Bear in mind it is not the amount of money one saves that counts as much in the long run as the moral stamina and the indomitable will that are developed as a result of the processes of saving. PETERSBURG, Fl. — Aercheon Monday in the domestic science lea's youngest horseshoe pitcher, Harold Paler, the 15-year-old boy of Akron, O., is the most recent entry in the fifth annual mid-winter national "barnyard golf" tournament to be held here during the week of Feb. 19. The boy marvel finished high in the midsummer meet, held in Des Cloines last August, topping several stars of national prominence, including C. C. Davis, who won leading honors here last February. FRENCH GLIDERS WITH SMALL MOTORS PARIS—Following the achievement of Lieut. Thoret, the French aviator who remained in the air more than seven hours with motor cut off, the French government is going ahead with the construction of a number of glider-planes, equipped with small motors. These motors will not be more than 25 or 30 H. P. enough to life the planes to a height of 100 meters, from where it will be possible to propel them in any direction by making use of the air currents. Lieut. Thoret's record breaking flight took place in Algeria. He declared on landing that he could have remained in the air seven days as well as seven hours. He said there was no reason why an experienced glider could not float through the air indefinitely unless an absolute calm developed.
