DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS Christ is ever new to the Christian whose vision of the Lord is not obscured by the shadow of his own selfishness. The grace of the Lord is ever mightier to the arms of faith.—G. D. Herron. Every law should be respected. This should not become a nation of law-breakers and law-evaders. Some characters in history, called fougous, should be termed infamous. The gossips never experience a shortage of raw material upon which to work. God makes the weather, and man should not waste his time complaining about it. The phonograph is elevating the standards of musical taste throughout the country. There is abundance of convincing proof in Nature that there is a resurrection and a future life. History is kind to the great, however much they may be maligned or underrated while they yet live. Kidnapping of children by desperate criminals should be made a capital offense in California and other states. Give the children of the land the protection of a constitutional amendment providing for abolition of child labor. California’s challenge to the world is: “Come, revel in this climate, and you will agree that there is none better on earth!” General Confidence still is in supreme command of the economic forces in their region. EMINENT DIPLOMAT IS CALLED BY DEATH Death of Charlemagne Tower removes a man who represented the United States diplomatically at the German, Russian and Austro-Hungarian courts for years with distinction. Do Americans appreciate their diplomats as highly as they should? It is doubtful. The duties which ministers and ambassadors perform are exceedingly important and exceedingly delicate. There has been tendency, latterly, to name only men of the highest fitness for these great positions. Government and people should show appreciation of the value and importance of the work accomplished by American diplomats. These faithful, able public servants should be honored and their services should be given the credit which they deserve. The purpose of the American government should be, at all times, to keep men of especial fitness in the diplomatic service and to encourage them in their work. SHALL AMERICA JOIN THE COURT OF NATIONS? Shall the United States join the permanent Court of International Justice at The Hague? President Harding strongly urges joining. But there are a few “irreconcilables” in the Senate who profess to see in this a move to drag the United States into the Leagen of Nations, consequently they are expected to oppose participation by the United States in this international tribunal. An eniment American — Elihu Root — helped to formulate the plan for the Court of International Justice. The project is noble in conception and it would do credit to the United States to be represented in a great judicial organization of worldwide scope designed to apportion justice to nations peacefully, and to remove fruitful causes of... In this powder and rouge age, a flower isn't the only thing that is Lorn to blush unseen. European history is just a record of the times men marched east and COMMENTS OF THE PRESS THE 'AMERICAN LANGUAGE' (New York Evening Post) A Congressman from Montana has introduced a bill defining "the national and official language of the government and people of the United States of America" as "the American language." Evidently the gentleman from Montana is so proud of our tongue that he wishes to give it a name that shall save it from the humiliation of being confused with the sort of thing they speak in England. It seems a little strange, therefore, that he should think any improvement in our language possible. Yet his bill contemplates action by congress for "the official and more particular standardization of the American language." Before this proposal is carried out the Montana representative should consider the destructive effect any change might have upon the American language as it is spoken in the halls of congress. Here, for instance, is a colloquy that occurred a few days ago in the senate: Mr. Harrison—The Senator agrees with me about this manager of the Hotel La Salle then. Mr. Curtis—Oh, I stated that, as the senator would know if he had been listening. The difficulty with the senator is that he makes statements and then does not listen to the answers. Mr. Harrison—The trouble is you never say anything. Mr. Curtis—Mr. President, it would be better for the senate if other senators said less. Mr. Harrison—That is the way with a reactionary Republican. He believes that They want to slide something through here without the people getting onto it, but we have to let them know about it. NEW YORK, March 1. "The string bean" has lost its popularity nor as a matter of food but of shape. For seasons past, we have nad to braight and slender and shapeless with a certain spineless slinkiness in our lines. Now curves have come back. No longer must the woman drink vinegar at the first suplecion of plumpness. Paris has decree curves and Manhattan is repeating after her "curves." Tony Bovo never intended to be a teacher; therefore why should he bother with such frills as learning to read? Poor Tony lived in this country for thirty-two years and enjoyed it. He rose to the place of foreman in a boiler factory and everything was rosy. Then he went home to Europe on a vacation to show his old friends how well things were going over here and when he landed home again the other day, the Ellis Island authorities wouldn't let him in because he couldn't read. Mrs Doyle and their sons who were with him passed the test with flying colors but Tony gave up at first glance. He couldn't understand the point of view. "Fm a steel man." Edmund Goulding, the young Englishman whose recent sea-novel "Fury," has been such a success, is now engaged on an psychological novel of American life. In this powder and rouge age, a flower isn't the only thing that is born to blush uneven. European history is just a record of the times men marched east and west across the Rhine. A gentleman is a man who can make you hate him, and treat you as nice you feel ashamed to cuss him. Occasional news that filters through indicates that Louise is about to do his regular spring dying. There's always darker side. When the meek inherit the earth, they'll find it rather heavily mottled. When Greek meets Greek is old stuff. What we learn to see is road hog meeting road hog. Nature ever tries to maintain a balance. When mother-in-law drops in, hurdard and wife usually fall out. A hick town is one where everybody knows how much old Tightwad Smith has deposited in the First National. A famous author is one whose works you may have free by paying all remaining installments on the set of trash. The disgrace of having a husband in jail is neutralized in some cases by the satisfaction of knowing where he is. A clergyman says poverty isn't an aid to virtue. He may know human nature, but he doesn't know the price of hooch. One official observers doubtless know how Noah felt that other time civilization was in process of being destroyed. Public: Once a man spent an evening improving his mind, and next week could remember something he had read. Mr. Harrison—The trouble is you never say anything. Mr. Curtis—Mr. President, it would be better for the senate if other senators said less. Mr. Harrison—That is the way with a reactionary Republican. He believes that. They want to slide something through here without the people getting onto it, but we have to let them know about it. Think what the "more particular standardization of the American language" would do to a dignified interchange like that. Or are we mistaken, and were Senators Harrison and Curtis setting a standard that, the Montana Congressman would like to see more generally followed? In any event he will surely not lay violent hands upon so particularly standardized a passage of American as this, which is taken from a speech by Congressman Young of Kentucky. "Life at longest is short, and in dealing with our fellow men we should at least to some extent temper justice with mercy and do unto others as we would have them do unto us; for a human being is at best only a weak vessel drifting on tempestuous and uncharted seas toward far blind shores, and—Break, break, break! the breakers roar." Till they leave some distant shore, and dash the hopeless craft against the rocks and bury physical existence forever beneath wild waters." The subject of Mr. Young's rhetoric, as anybody can see, was the Daugherty impeachment case.
