ELKS LODGE SEES
FIVE GREAT BOUTS
A corking good time was celebrated at the local Elks' lodge by one of the biggest turndowns of the season. After the lodge meeting was over, members were treated to five happy boxing bouts between pupils of Eddie Mattie' U. S. C. school of boxing. The boys all mixed in lively fashion and kept the big crowd on edge throughout the doings.
The following boys participated: Harold Galoway, half-back and guard of the U. S. C. football team, met Earl Parlow in the first event on the bill and the boys started the ball abluring in pretty style by four spirited rounds of clever work. Next in order was the go between, George Gripp and "Cannon Ball" Baker, crack full-black of the Varsity, who put on an exhibition of box-fighting and slugging combined that had the crowd wild with excitement.
Next in line was the appearance of our own Leonard Lee and Jimmy Brenton of U. S. C., a former Vernon favorite. Leonard is now out of the game as is also Brenton with the exception of frequent workouts to keep fit.
Jimmy and Leonard displayed a lot of that class last night that made them the good boys they once were when they were in the game. Lee, at one time, held the Bantam championship of Colorado while Brenton was the holder of the Pacific Coast title at about the same time. It was an interesting bout to watch.
But all look what came next. No less a personage than "Our Own" Billy Darnley, athletic manager of the Anaheim Athletic club. Yes, folks, the Ol' War Horse himself donned the padded mitts with a promising young middleweight answering to the name of Johnny Morton. Billy and Johnny mixed in great fashion and had the bunch in an uppoort throut. Morton is a fast and aggressive lad and packs a terrific wallop and he kept the Ol' War Horse steppin' roome.
Billy displayed an amount of cleverness and tricks of the game that made him a champion of his class when in his palmy days, stuff that is evident shown in the game nowadays. The two were going like a house to watch. Eddie's opponent was another U. S. C. boy, Jimmy Woodward and this Jimmy boy is "some punkiness" with his dukes.
Eddie is thinking of making a "comeback" and we'll tell the wide world that he should make good my time he wants to start if the chase he showed last night is a sample.
Popular "Doc" Barnes was master of ceremonies and also acted as third man in the ring. He kept the boys working fast and allowed no stalling. He displayed anything but a heart in the Darnley-Morton fracas when he let Young Johnny hammer Ol' Billy all over the ring—almost? But Billy refused to let anything be put over on him; such a cruel manner and he told Johnny that his shoe was untied. Johnny "fell" and he sure felt what Billy let go, right snack on the beezer. "Oh boy."

The two were going like a house afire at the close of time and the crowd hollered for more. Billy can still go some. The monly art was never better demonstrated than in this exhibition.
Last, but not least, another old favorite to local fans and a home town boy as well, Eddie Mattis, made his bow and stepped thru four great rounds of work that was a pleasure to handle.

MEYERS IN HURRY; RETURNS EAST SOON
"Is Mabee really game to meet me," was the interrogation sent to Anaheim today by Johnny Meyers, middleweight wrestling champ. Meyers and his manager returned to Los Angeles Tuesday evening without seeing the County-rd rancher.
"It Mabee wants to engage in such a match he will have to make up his mind very soon as I will have to state back early shortly." continued Meyers. Mabee, who has been suffering from a severe cold, had not made his mind definitely yet today as to his attitude in the matter.
