375,000 MILES IS FRANKLIN'S RECORD
Motorists who figure that the "if I old bus" has done pretty well if it lasts fifty or sixty thousand miles, will be interested in learning of an automobile in use in Astoria, Oregon, which has piled up a mileage equivalent to more than 14 times the circumference of the earth at the equator. The car, which is a 1910 Franklin, is owned and is still being driven by Walter G. Smith of Astoria; it was purchased in 1910 from the Omaha Franklin dealership. In 1917, when the speedometer connection broke, the dial registered 258,062.6 miles the car had actually travelled. Since that time, Smith estimates that he has driven the car about 4,000 miles.
Smith states that the 13 year old Franklin has covered the trip across the continent and back three times and has been in 29 states. It held a record of 18 hours between San Francisco and Los Angeles before the highway was built between these two places. The only new parts ever put in the car, according to Smith, outside of body and fender changes, are a new set of intake valves, oil pump gear and one rear axle drive shaft. The car has the original pistons and rings. Compression is still good and the car today makes about 16% miles to a gallon of gas. Smith still finds the "old bun" dependable on long trips despite the fact that it has arrived at a hoary old age and has chalked up a mileage approached by but few cars.
MANN RECEIVES FIRST DODGE SEDAN
Charley Mann, Dodge distributor, on Thursday of this week received his first model Dodge Business Sedan. It is the finest car ever turned out by the manufacturers.
It is upholstered in full Spanish leather inside with lining to match in color and outside has the baked enamel finish which has done so much to make the reputation of the Packard Closed Car Production Growing.
"The enclosed car is coming into its own," says C. F. Cromer, branch manager for Dale & Co. "The demand now would indicate that the sedan and coupe are being regarded by the motor buying public as cars for all-year-round service.
"Because of the demand for enclosed cars of all types, the Packard Motor Car Co. has increased its proportion of enclosed cars to open cars in the regular daily production.
"It wasn't so long ago that the automobile was considered practically useless in the winter in the colder states. After the end of its six months' summer season it was run into the garage, the wheels jacked up off the floor, the radiator drained, battery taken out and the body covered up with muslin to await the coming of summer. While snow covered the streets and the January thaws flooded the roads, one of the most important transportation units stood unused."
"But in the present day the provident business man who is looking always for the chance to conserve his time, is buying the automobile for all year-round service. Because he doesn't like to be inconvenienced by rain and wants to keep the snow and chill winds out in the winter it is the enclosed car which has his preference, and this preference is being shown clearly in the sales charts of the automobile companies.
"Recent price revisions have brot the enclosed car down to a point which never before was thought possible. At the same time manufacturers, particularly the makers of quality cars, have carried the convenences and comfort of the enclosed types to a high point."

The plate glass window in the rear is unusually large—14x28. The glass size of the rear quarter windows is 20x23, while the rear doors have a window opening of approximately 19x21 inches and the front doors a window opening of 19x20 inches.
Para-Bell Cord Tire Sales Grow on Coast
"The figures showing the number of Para-Bell cords on California cars have completely staggered me," says F. M. Chace, factory representative who is visiting the coast. Chase's statement was given out here by the Reliable Tire Company, Anaheim distributors.
"With the high quality of Para Bell cord tires, their wonderful non-skid features and the service and courteous treatment given the customers by the Bell Tire & Rubber Co., there is no doubt in my mind that the Para Bell cord will be the most popular tire on the coast at the end of the 1923 season.
"I may add that about April we will have an oversize cord tire which will sell to the motorist about 20 per cent lower than the average cord tire and build into same our usual high quality."

COURTESY ON ROAD
IS URGED BY CLUB
Have you ever thought of being "helpful" while you are driving on the city streets or boulevards?
There are certain things that every cautious motorist does to avoid having accidents, but sad to relate, says officials of the Automobile club of So. Calif., theer is generally very little of a helpful spirit shown by motorists.
For instance, in approaching a street intersection the law requires the correct arm signal if the motorist is going to make a turn. Sometimes motorists say to themselves "Oh well!" there is no one behind me so why should I bother to give a signal? They don't stop to consider, states the Auto Club report, that an arni signal given in such an instance is very helpful to a driver approaching from another direction, for then he can tell how to guage his speed even if he is not coming from behind.
Helpfulness on the roads is very closely akin to courtesy, and motorists who practice helpfulness will not grab the right, of way at street intersections just because the margin of doubt is in their favor, but if they are truly helpful to the other fellow they will slow down courteously and see what he is going to do. In this way many accidents could be avoided as well as the loss of a lot of temper and the generating of a lot of ill feeling.
You can also be helpful in a traffic jam when there is no policeman present if you will not try to force your way thru the mob of machines, but will look carefully around and see how you can best help to unravel the tangle.

1 DISTRIBUTOR BUYS 5 TRAINS MAXWELLS
Maxwell Motor Corporation is literally shipping cars by the trainload—an unusual position for a motor manufacturer to find himself in the dead of winter.
Beginning with the New York Show, orders from Eastern territory were received which were indicative of a strong continued demand for the Maxwell product in that section. One of these orders—said to be the largest received this year by an individual manufacturer—called for nearly a million dollars worth of cars, or five trainloads. Shipments were started in January and will continue thru March. The entire consignment will be consumed by one dealer for distribution in New Jersey.
At Chicago show and shortly thereafter, middle western dealers bombarded the Maxwell factory with trainload orders. It is reported. St. Louis has already received one full train and will soon have another on the way. Milwaukee, Des Moines, Rockford, Ill., and Green Bay, Wise...are some of the other points taking cars in trainload lots.
Through the winter months—December, January, and February—Maxwell has not been hampered in its production by having a strong buying demand only for its closed models, but has been able to keep both closed and open body production at a high note. This is largely accounted for by the sport cars which were introduced late in Fall, and were instantly in popular demand in spite of the fact that open models are usually slighted by the buying public in winter months.
POOR TIRES ARE SOURCE OF DANGER
There is still rainy weather ahead, and car owners who need tires are warned not to put off getting them too long. The non-skid quality of some tires lies only in the shape of the tread, says S. R. Walter of the Anaheim Vulcanizing Works, but this isn't true of the Kelly Springfield, which possesses one of the most wonderful carcases to be found in any tire.
Safety is better than saving a few hundred miles on a tire which needs replacement now and may blow out.
Time was when the Kelly cost considerably more than any or almost any other make of tire. That isn't so now. The Kelly, as one of the makes carrying the standard warranty, is on practically the same price level as the other tires.
The Kelly is cheapest in the long run.
Eisemann Magneto Makes Tractor Start
Think of having a magneto on your Fordson tractor that will ensure the machine's always starting, even on the coolest mornings and highest altitudes! That's what the Eisemann magneto does, says George H. Ennla of the Automotive Electric Co., 234 South Los Angeles-st. Ennla has sold 15 of these magnetos recently, including one to Dr. John H. Boege, whose ranch has an altitude much higher than those about Anaheim.
The Eisemann gives that white-hot spark every time you want it. It will not only eliminate ignition trouble, but develop maximum power from the engine, says Ennla. It is particularly well-adapted to low grade fuels such as kerosene.
This magneto is the same as that used by nearly 200 manufacturers of the highest grade of motor trucks, tractors, stationary engines, industrial locomotives and other types of equipment.

together upon the skill of the drivers and the speed of their cars, and in this event there can be no criticism of either with respect to a angle car or driver. Jimmy Murphy is the holder of the National championship, won through his victorious campaign during 1922. Tommy Milton won the title the preceding year, while Eddie Hearne was champion in 1919. Away back in 1916 Darlo Resta won the laurel and olive as king of the speed pilots, and while Resta has not touched a wheel since 1916 until he started practice here a few weeks ago, he has conquered the unfamiliar turns and become accustomed to the remarkable speed which the Los Angeles track permits. Cooper is another former champion, having been the recipient of championship honors during 1913 and 1915. All of these save Milton are members of the Durant team, Klein and Durant himself being the only two members of the team that have not held national honors and each of these two has won many races and high honors in past years and is rich in experience.
SEEK DAMAGES IN RADIO SET FRAUD
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 23—On the ground they were induced to embark in a new venture in radio apparatus under alleged misrepresentations, Edward M. Kenworthy and Philip D. Caray, doing business as the Southern California Sales & Service Co., will seek $1264 damages from L. B. Benjamin, John N. Hurt and Harold A. Benjamin in a suit which was on file today in the superior court?
Bennett Hill, Ralph DoPalma, Harry Hartz, Frank Elliott, Joe Thomas, Leon Duray, "Lead-Hoof" Morton, Al Meicher and Jerry Wonderlich make up the remaining drivers in the list of sixteen entries and each has tuned his car to the limit of speed and endurance. It would not be surprising were one of these to be first to be given the coveted checker flag by Starter Fred J. Wagner on Sunday despite the apparent advantage of team work the six-man Durant team will possess. It will be a "straight-eight" race from beginning to end, with each of the sixteen cars motored, with that type of power plant possessing the utmost of speed and power.
