BAPTISM SUBJECT AT THE TABERNACLE A banquet was served last night at the Tabernacle to a large number of people, many from other cities. Delegations were present from Los Angeles, Long Beach, Whittler, Pombna, Van Nuys, Monrovia, Ontario and other places. The purpose was to launch an evangelistic campaign for Southern California. All these delegations remained for the night service. Money was raised to keep C. C. Root in the field for a year. The evangelist read Luke's promise and the record in Acts of the coming of the Holy Spirit. He said: "The record shows that the Spirit fell upon the disciples in the upper room and not the sinners for they were not even there but came together after hearing the mighty sound." "The people accused the apostles of being drunk but that was impossible as Peter showed it was only nine o'clock in the morning. Peter as the spokesman stood up and preached unto them Jesus for it was ordained of God that the gospel should be the power of God unto salvation unto every one that believeth. "When the people heard the preaching they were convinced and said 'What must we do?' Acts 2:37 and Peter speaking as the Spirit gave him utterance answered; 'Repent and be baptized every one of you unto the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins and you shall receive that gift of the Holy Spirit.' Acts 2:38. The evangelist said that the Christian or the Church of Christ has sometimes been accused of not believing in the Holy Spirit but said, "We believe and teach that there never has been a soul converted since the Day of Pentecost until now and there never will be a soul converted from now until Doom's Day that is not converted by the Holy Spirit using the word of God which is the sword of the Spirit. We find that His orders are to preach Christ and promise the Spirit. First Christ and then the Spirit." "The Holy Spirit works in three ways (1) The miraculous. (2) The comforting power of the Spirit. (3) The converting power of the Spirit." On the day of the Pentecost there were fifteen nations present. When Peter spoke they all heard in the Surprise Party for Calumpit Adjutant A surprise party was given to Chas. E. Dixon, the Adjutant of Calumpit Camp No. 26, Dept. of California, United Spanish War Veterans at his home at 1253 West 44th street, Santa Ana, Wednesday evening February 21, 1923. It was the fifty-fourth anniversary of his birth and was also the forty-fifth anniversary of Sam Buckridge, of Orange. Two very handsome cakes were put on the table; one had "Charles, 54", and the other had "Sam 45" written on the frosting. "Goliath" Dan R. Mears was detailed early in the evening to induce the Adjutant to go up to 4th and Van Ness to see Captain Jones and while they were gone the guests arrived and the house darkened and when Goliath and his friend returned they entered the door and the lights were flashed on and there sat about forty smiling guests. Games were indulged in until midnight when the hostess served refreshments of ice cream and cherries and cake and coffee. The guests were mostly Spanish War Vets and members of the Auxiliary and they presented the Adjutant with a pair of Indian book ends while some of the other guests gave books, etc. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Howard A. Wassum and two children, of Tastin; Mr. and Mrs. T. Sidd Carmack, of Santa Ana; Mr. and Mrs. Sam Buckridge and daughter Mildred, of Orange; Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Patmer, of Santa Ana; Mr. and Mrs. William Carliile, of Santa Ana; Mr. and Mrs. J. Markwalder and daughter, of Santa Ana; Mr. and Mrs. Camp and son, of Orange; Mr. and Mrs. Henry G. Miller, son and daughter, of Tastin; J. D. Jones, of Santa Ana; Mr. and Mrs. Dan R. Mears, of Santa Ana; Mrs Hannah Gentz, of Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Ruth Roper and daughter, of Los Angeles; Mr. and Mrs. Hardin T. Reed, of Santa Ana; Misses Harriet and Mildred Reed, of Santa Ana; Miss Louise Plummer, of Santa Ana; Mr. and Mrs. Walter W. Tantlinger, of Tustin; Mr. and Mrs. Adams, of Santa Ana; Mrs. Bertha N. Dixon and daughter, and her 54 year old hubby. Sam Buckridge says that he will have the "Surprise" given to him at his home next year. (3) The converting power of the Spirit. On the day of the Pentecost there were fifteen nations present. When Peter spoke they all heard in the language in which they were born. This is not reproduced today. The evangelist asserted that if any one New York city where every nation is entering the port and would preach the gospel so that everyone could understand in his language they would listen then as they would never listen again. Then the missionaries if they had this power would not have to learn the language of the countries. When the first grain of wheat was produced it was a miracle but now it is reproduced by law. In the beginning it was necessary to have the miraculous in converting but not now. We are not baptized in the Spirit but receive the gift of the Spirit. The gospel is the power of God unto salvation so the Word must be preached. In nature, everything produces after its own kind, Plant radish seed and radishes grow; plant potatoes and potatoes grow; plant wheat and reap wheat. So we plant God's seed to produce God's seed. "What Must I Do To Be Baptized?" is the subject tonight. The evangelist asks every one to bring a Bible. There will be a big baptismal service. RURAL CARRIERS MEET VESTERDAY On Washington's birthday the following members of the Orange county Rural Carrier's Association visited Los Angeles, called on Postmaster P. P.
