SHELL DISCOVERY
WELL RETURNED AS
4000-BBL. PRODUCER
WITH OIL OPERATORS
The Shell Company played the stellar role at Long Beach by returning the field's discovery well, Alamitos No. 1 to production at 4,000 barrels. Alamitos No. 1 a year ago came in at 800 barrels and at that time was regarded as a great well. Now at 4622 feet the well enjoys the distinction of being the deepest well yet completed on the hill.
The Macmillan-Davis Syndicate has another nice producer that adds a lot of success to their few months of oil operating at Long Beach, MacMillan-Davis No. 2 was completed at 4430 and started off with an initial production of 35,000 barrels. The M and D well is 100 feet deeper than the Shell's recent completion Patton-Wilson No. 1 less than a 100 feet away and is producing from the lower sands only. "Pop" Schneider formerly a division superintendent for the Algamated Oil Company is directing the MacMillan-Davis field work and he has scored two of the best wells in the field. No 2 his latest success was finished without a fishing job or a delay of any kind.
The Boosh-Vorheis Oil Company stopped drilling on the Cadwell at 4635 feet and the general impression is that the well is a dry hole and will be abandoned. While the well has not shown any very favorable indications of oil it will not be abandoned, but will be allowed to stand suspended awaiting further field developments.
The small operator continues to find the Long Beach field the best in the West for quick results. The Evans Oil Syndicate one of the small companies that went into Long Beach a few months ago, now has a 2000 barrel well. The Evans producer was completed at 3900 feet and is flowing 28 gravity oil. The completion was made by Ed. MacAdams the man who directed the Marine Oil Corporation's field work when it first started operation at Long Beach.
The Hub Oil Company is an island of the small companies at Long Beach that his had splendid success in building up a production at Long Island.
1000 Involved in Bogus Coin Conspiracy
NEW YORK, Feb. 22—More than 1000 persons alleged to be conceived with the international counterfeiting corporation exposed here yesterday with the arrest of 28 ring-leaders, were sought by federal authorities throughout the country today.
The corporation with traveling salesmen, wholesale and retail, in every important city in America, and South America and parts of Europe, is responsible for the manufacture of between $2,000,000 and $3,000,000 worth of spurious money and millions of dollars worth of fake revenue stamps and liquor labels, according to Federal Agent Joe Palma and other government officers.

The Hub Oil Company is anithor of the small companies at Long Beach that his had splendid success in building up a production at Long Beach. Completing Rissman No. 2 at 3384 in the upper zone the Hub got an 1800 barrel well, Rissman No. 2 is the Hub's second producer and gives the company an aggregate production of 300 barrels daily.
The Lone Star Oil Company is getting its first showing of oil at 4010 feet. Up to just recently the well had not shown anything favorable and there was just a little bit of anxiety as to its outcome. At 4145 where drilling is now going ahead the showing is very favorable. The well is being drilled by the Federal Drilling Company, and the Federal has a substantial interest in the property.
The Superior Oil Company added 3000 barrels of new production to the Long Beach field when Miller No. 1 was completed at 4360. The Miller property is a portion of the Sandberg Petroleum Company's property that was recently taken over the Keck Drilling Company and the Superior Oil Company. The bringing in of this big well will bring a lot of joy and satisfaction to holders of Sandburg Petroleum stocks.

MANY FROM COUNTY GATHER AT PUENTE WALNUT INSTITUTE
Over 500 walnut growers of California assembled at the Fifth annual Walnut Growers Institute in Puente on February 17th.
The program brought out very important investigational work which is reaching maturity. Dr. D. Batchelor reported on the new walnut work which is being conducted by the Field Department of California Walnut Growers Association and the Citrus Experimentation Station. A brief summary of the talk should be included the following subjects:
1. Use sufficient water to keep normal foliage during the growing season so as to allow the nuts drop clear.
2. If a large number of berry stick-tights develop on the trunk pole them in the early part of harvest, and don't mix with the er nuts. They should be hushed immediately. They are already totally cured and should not be mixed with normal nuts.
3. If a portion of the trees show a tendency toward green sting tights, pole them the first time or Don't allow them to remain on the tree, for if left on the tree or the ground the hanks develop damp, mushy surrounding which causes molding and darkening of the meats. If taken care of enough they may come in the Mond Brand.
4. It will take extra labor husk properly, but the average ferential of $7 to $15 per 100 pounds will more than pay for the extra bor required. Always keep stick-tights separate from others mixing tend to lower the total.
The Codling Moth situation handled by R. W. Hodgson, pointed out that this pest was the increase in all sections, ex Orange County apparently, year 1922 was a very bad year. Codling Moth in apples and oranges.
More concerted action in measures was recommended and elder study of the proper time applying dust or spray was urged. Whether spraying or dusting was used of any avail, has to be put on the right time. As a general either of these operations should be carried out.
Louis Eytinge, who served sixteen years of a life sentence in prison for murder, and who was paroled, entered business and made good in the fullest sense of the word, is pictured here with his wife who was Miss Pauline L. Diver, a New York business woman. They were married only recently, and are to leave soon on a honeymoon. Eytinge's case is attracting much attention among prison welfare workers, for his record is one that is held up as an example to others who have "records".

SPANISH WAR VETS IN SOCIAL EVENING
Calumpit Camp No. 26 and Calumpit Auxiliary No. 39, Department of California U.S.W.V., held their February social meeting Tuesday evening at the G.A.R. Hall, in Santa Ana.
The entertainment features were handled by senior vice commander, W.W.Tantlinger and chaplain, J.W.Isbell; and the refreshment was prepared by Mrs.Jean Tantlinger, Mrs.Emman Patmor and Mrs.Dena Isbell.
Quite a number of new faces were seen and among them Mr. and Mrs.C.W.McNaught and Mr. and Mrs.Earl Camp; three two couples will join the Camp and Auxiliary in the near future.
The entertainment committee had the assemblage play the game of "Radio" and "Bishop". Tantlinger reported that he went fishing and had nearly a hundred suckers on a string.
There were vocal solos by Miss Adeline Waffle and Miss Durgan; piano solo by Miss Ruth Seavy; whistling by Miss Durgan and a toad dance by Miss Louise Plummer; the talented daughter of Mrs.Nannie Reed.
Senior Vice Commander Henry G. Miller took part in the entertainment by telling a couple of "true" stories on Post Commander Howard A.Wassum, which elicited roars of laughter.
Mrs.Lois Rollin, a member of the Council of Administration of the Auxiliary, was present at the meeting and addressed the Comrades and Sisters on the subject of the California Soldier's Widows Home near Sawtelle. They have planned to raise $50,000 for the first unit of the building and like sum for the endowment fund and will hold a big celebration and dance, at the Exposition Park, in Los Angeles, on May 12th, next. Adjutant Chas. E.Dixon informed her of the "Box Social" to be held in the near future by the Camp and Auxiliary and the funds so raised to go to the project.
There was also a reading by Miss Audrey Isbell.
The refreshment committee then announced supper and every one present filled into the banquet hall and partook of some excellent coffee, fine salad, wholesome sandwiches and splendid cake.
PRIDE OF PALOMAR FROM KYNE NOVEL
Admirers of Peter B.Kyne's stirring novels, several of which already have reached the screen, will have an opportunity to see the pictureurization of his latest novel. "The Pride of Palomar," which now ranks among the best sellers of the current book season. The story was printed serially in Cosmopolitan magazine and it scored tremendously. Now that the book has appeared, its popularity shows no sign of waning.
Admirably suited to adoption to the screen, Cosmopolitan Productions pictured the novel for Paramount release in California, on precise spots where the action of the story takes place. Many of the scenes were photographed at the old mission where "Ramona" was born. Interesting scapes in the garden of San Luis Rey Mission are a feature of the picture.
Director Frank Horzage took his entire company to the Mission and surrounding country for the scenes of the picture. Mr.Kyne, the author, had laid out the locations, and all the producer had to do was to follow in his footsteps. In the book Mr.Kyne took a slam at coole labor in California, and while most of the Japanese in Southern California are ignorant of the English language they were wise to the fact that the cookies had been attacked in the story and they would do a lick of work for the picture.
"We gave an order to a Japanese nurseryman for a lot of potted plants," said Mr.Horzage, "but afterworking on the job for five days he found out that they were for The Pride of Palomar and struck work. In the same way you couldn't get a prop' in a lap shop if you mentioned 'The Pride of Palomar'. However, we got along very well."
The story of "The Pride of Palomar," which will be on view at the California theater tomorrow for two days, revolves about a young California who returns home from service abroad to find his father dead and his big ranch in the hands of hostile interests. He loves the daughter of the man who is fighting him for possession of the ranch and when he discovers that she has secretly aided him, he resolves to go it alone even though he must sacrifice his love. How he wins his battle is splendidly told.
Marjorie Daw and Forrest Stanley mixing tend to lower the total.
The Codling Moth situation handled by R.W.Hodgson, pointed out that this pest was the increase in all sections, exOrange County apparently. year 1922 was a very bad year. Codling Moth in apples and oranges.
More concerted action in measures was recommended and closer study of the proper time applying dust or spray was urged. Whether spraying or dusting, to any avail, has to be put on the right time. As a general either of these operations should done when the eggs are being posited and before hatching.
The formula recommended for combination control of Aphis Codling moth is 200 gallons was 8 pounds basic arsenate of lead, paint Black Leaf 40.
Carlyle Thorpe, Manager, Cormia Walnut Growers Association gave an illustration lecture on trip through the Orient and Co-nent for the purpose of studying foreign production of walnuts, pointed out that in no country walnut culture a primary industry Walnuts were generally grown hedge row form and miscellaneous plantings. The cost of produce in the foreign countries was low due to the fact that the investment of the nuts was second matter in which the whole farm participated at odd times. Any venue obtained from the walnut vest was generally clear money. Thorpe pointed out that the way the California walnut can compete is by proving and maintaining a high standard of quality.
Prof. A.W. Christie of thelege of Agriculture spoke on depletion in relation to walnut ingering and indicated that some grass was being made by his department in working out a more economical method of artificial drying walnuts. He stated that Oregon practically all the walnuts were dehydrated successfully prune dryness. The cost of artifice dehydration is really less than drying because:
1. Saving of labor; and
2. Better control of moludse as to prevent excessive drying.
In artificial dehydration the crease in weight of the finis product is sufficiently greater than the weight of the sul dried prooct to meet the cost of the dehydration in a short time.
Resolutions were passed by growers assembled urging that work of the Citrus Experiment on moldy walnuts be continued and also that variety tests be established by the College of Agriculture for the testing out of a variety of nuts that might be added to the various sections of state.
