Fish and Jellyfish
W. E. Allen
Calif. Biological Feature Service.
Not long ago I received from Dr. Marie Lebour of the Plymouth Marine Laboratory in England a paper describing the results of her studies on the food of extremely small or microscopic animals and plants of the sea. Amongst many other interesting things I was especially attracted by an account of the capture and use for food of young fish by small jelly fish. Most of these little fishes were probably only one length and the jellyfishes are about one fifth to one half of an inch in diameter. The little fishes were, of course, only recently hatched from tile eggs and they were undoubtedly more nearly helpless than many lower animals of the same size.
One of the jellyfishes was shaped much like an umbrella except that the stem like projection in the position of the handle was not very long. The other two kinds pictured by Dr. Lebour were shaped more like a tea cup and both had more prominent projections in the position of the handles of an umbrella. One of these projections was quite long, at least twice as long as the animal was wide. In all jellyfishes the mouth of the nailmal is situated at the end of the central projection. Around the edge of the umbrella or cup shaped body of each animal is a series of thread-like tenacles with different numbers in different species, the umbrella shaped animal having as many as twenty-four of the tenacies. Such jellyfishes are so clear and jelly like in appearance that they are difficult to see in the water and they certainly do not look like very dangerous creatures.
But, by keeping them in the laboratory in aquarium jars, Dr. Lebour was able to observe their activities over a period of two or three weeks. From their shape and their equipment, one can easily imagine that the jellyfish are not good swimmers. Indeed they do little more than float much of the time, although most kinds can swim easily and erratically contracting the margin of the bell and forcing water out of the hollow corresponding to the cavity of a tea cup. If then, the little fish would only keep well away from them they need not be captured.
ATHLETIC UNION SUITS
The Sierra Nevada athletic union suit of surprisingly good quality and workmanship for the extreme low price we name ..... 69c
The Topkis athletic union in small check nainsook & fine crew striped material nationally known 95c for quality..... B.V.D.' $1.25
However, the swimming about in water full of enemies of various kinds and innocently searching for food some of the tiny fishes to get within reach of the thread like tennies, or perhaps they bump against them. At any rate they get near enough so that the tenacle (or as many as twenty-four tenacles) can stick to them and entangle them until they are unable to escape. Since the tentacles are furnished with numerous little devices which can throw out a poisonous barb it is not very difficult to hold the captive for it seems to be paralyzed at once. (To one who has bumped into a jellyfish while bathing in the ocean it will not seem strange that such a tiny little fish should be paralyzed by a jellyfish several times as large. No doubt the poison so painful to us in the large jellyfish is very much like that in the smaller. It seems very remarkable to many of us that an animal so low in the scale of life as is the jellyfish should be so destructive to an animal so far up the scale as is the fish. Dr. Lebour has shown that there are several kinds of jellyfish thus destructively and that several kinds of young fish are thus endangered. Probably also, these studies bring more vividly to our understanding the awful gauntlet of terrible enemies which must be run by the young of many fishes. Perhaps we can therefore better understand the need for production of millions of organs by a parent fish in order that a few may come to mature life, and nobility we may better appreciate the risk of causing total destruction of some species of fish if man kills vast numbers in addition to those killed by natural enemies.
Take a cue from everything, then you will find the key to your own advancement.
When a man recognizes evil instinct in himself, he has taken the first step to eradicate it.
