DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR SIMPLIFY GOVERNMENT BY REORGANIZING It is not thy faith, but God's faithfulness thou must rely on. Casting thine eyes down to thyself, to behold the great distance between what thou desirest, and what thou deservest, is enough to make thee gladay, stagger, and reel unto despair. Ever, therefore, life up thine eyes unto the hills, whence cometh thy help. —Elizabeth Charles. The murderous criminal should not have ready access to deadly weapons. The overburdened taxpayer has no appetite for "pork barrel" appropriations. Prost no longer is king in the citrus belt. The lowly and homely smudge pot has dethroned the levy monarch. The Christian religion, in its purity, is founded upon devout works, not upon hypocritical words and works. When you see a good moving picture, praise it just as readily and as strongly as you would condemn a bad picture. Truthful, vivid advertising of California should be persisted in, to keep this state's charms and advantages before the world. Teach morality to the child at home and in school. This kind of influence keeps many a boy and girl from entering school of vice and of crime. Do you think, or do you just think that you thing? Analyze your thought processes, and determine whether or not you really think, or just go through. Reorganization of governmental departments at Washington is being considered concretely, upon instigation of President Harding. A joint committee of Congress has in hand formulation of plans for simplifying governmental functioning and making the work more effective. Some of the changes suggested are somewhat sweeping, not to say startling. For instance, proposed consolidation of the War and Navy Departments of National Defense, which would have to do not only with the army and navy, but National resources in general. It also is proposed to establish a Department of Education and Welfare, which would include four principal subdivisions: Education, health, social service and veterans' relief. The reorganization plan would provide also for shifting of several bureaus and minor consolidations, in the interests of efficiency and economy. Another important proposed change would alter the name of the Post-office Department to the Department of Communications, and this would contemplate development and extension of telephone and telegraph communications, including wireless, for the public benefit. Mr. Harding pledged this reorganization in his campaign for election. He has had experts at work for a long time to devise plans and to make recommendations as to the changes. There seemingly is merit in these proposals. Wherever there is a duplication of effort by departments and bureaus, reforms should be made. Whatever can be done to increase efficiency, promote simplicity and effect economies in government, should be done for the public benefit. The United States is a world power, but not a world-meddler. Truthful, vivid advertising of California should be persisted in, to keep this state's charms and advantages before the world. Teach morality to the child at home and in school. This kind of influence keeps many a boy and girl from entering school of vice and of crime. Do you think, or do you just think that you thing? Analyze your thot processes, and determine whether or not you really think, or just go through a dased mental process which passes for thought. California should declare relentless and unceasing war on crime, and bend all its legal powers, energies and resources to the suprission of the shocking deeds which shame this commonwealth. War might be outlawed on paper, and yet persist, if it were not outlawed in the hearts of people. There must be a change of heart among the millions of the civilized world if war is to become obsolete. In every grateful and gracious way possible, the gallant service men of the World War who fell in battle, or died of wounds or disease, should be memorized. And the survivors should be treated just as graciously and considerately as are the dead. The United States is a world power, but not a world-meddler. Amid the strendous activities of each day do not forget or neglect public spirit. Each and every man and woman should be public-spirited, not perfunctoryly and hot from a reluctant sense of duty, but cheerfully and zeestfully, as though it is a pleasing privilege to serve the community and to foster its well-being and progress. California climate is toasted throughout the civilized world, by the countless thousands of tourists who have been here, at one time and another. It is not Californians alone who laud this clime, but enthusiastic visitors who, with discriminating judgment, appreciate the excellence of the climate with which to behigh Providence perpetually endows this state. The encomiums which thus come to California are beyond price. They could not be purchased. Send for Everett True The Hicksville township peat-killing contest supper has been postponed until a later date, owing to lack of interest—Hicksville (O.) News-Tribune. There is grave danger, it is reported, that the police may step in and bring Clara Phillips back to the United States. Politicians are talking of another canal from Atlantic to Pacific. We hope it's from New York to San Francisco. That will hurt us and when we're broke the politicians will quit. Somebody should nominate Catherine Uribe for a job in the L. A. detective bureau. February will end with a rainstorm, says a weather expert. For those working out income tax reports, March will begin with a brainstorm. If rumors were facts, this country would be honey-combed with railroad extension. Day we got our overcoat paid for, spring styles came on the market. Some of the nations get along in sweet accord, and others are allies. Another inning that America ought to produce at home is population. Germany's opposition to the Ruhr invasion appears to be a howling success. A traffic cop says a little fact will make speeders slow down. Doesn't he mean tack. There are no statues erected to men who thought it best to let well enough alone. Another nice thing about dining at a restaurant is that the wife does not look that way when you spill something on the table cloth. Almost any husband would make a perfect lover if he got Valentino's salary for doing it. Strange that the olive branch should be an emblem of peace. There is oil in the olive. At any rate, the man who uses a sandbag to get your money does not make you file a return. A klan critic says there is no true Americanism concealed under a hood. What about the jitney engine? Times change little, after all, and this generation merely has changed the patches from pants to inner tubes. Some men haven't spent a cent for repairs since they bought their cars in 1921, and some have better memories. On a country road the tourist has his ups and downs. In one place he bogs down and in another he mires up. Seizing the German mines will bring only a temporary advantage. The thing to do is to seize the German stork. And so more homes are illuminated at night under Prohibition. Well, well; at times we think more citizens are. IF rumors were facts, this country would be honey-combed with railroad extension. Day we got our overcoat paid for, spring styles cane on the market. Last minute news: Terence McClancey breaks world's record by opening a can of sardines with a butter knife in 4 minutes 10 seconds. Lovers Which is the better lover fat man or thin? A French newspaper puts the question to leading Parisian actresses. Madeleine Charlier prefers thin men. Marcelie Yrven de Mornand gives the wisest answer: "It is the soul alone that matters—physique has nothing to do with affection." Louisa is right. Love is psychic. That's why, for the homeliest woman in existence, there's some man who'll think she's the most beautiful. The French have advanced 25 miles into Germany, which is 128 miles further than Germany expected. We know now why the government sent the returned soldiers to Savannah instead of New York. Jackie Coogan was in N.Y., and nobody would have noticed the soldiers. We have always regarded Billy Sunday as being one of America's foremost leaders in thought and he has proven it. Billy was asked by a New York paper to name 10 books. WE HAVE ON HAND ONE 1920 TOURING, ONE 1921 TOURING AND ALSO ONE 1922 TOURING. And so more homes are illuminated at night under Prohibition. Well, well; at times we think more citizens are. A beauty hint says face powder alds in keeping a husband loyal. The moderns, however, seem to prefer gunpowder. Correct this sentence: "Please do not make me play outdoors," said the little boy: "I'm afraid I'll get my clothes soiled." The annoying thing about people who get ahead in the world is that they hold the middle of the road and won't let you pass.
