Tuesday, Feb. 20, 1923 STANDARD-MURPHY AGGREGATION WILL PLAY LOCALS SUN. Standard-Murphy, the great baseball aggregation that defeated the Annheim Merchants in a pitcher's duel 1 to 0 three weeks ago, will probably be the opponent for the local team next Sunday. No other team, with the possible exception of Pascadena, can attract such a large gate here as the Irish drillers. Pascadena draws the local fans because of the bitter rivalry of the past. Standard-Murphy athletes are greeted by large turnouts because the oilmen are recognized as great ballgamers and real sportsmen. Doty Bush, Anaheim's crack second-baseman, who reported to the Los Angeles Pacific Coast league club at the offices in the Angel City yesterday, expecting to accompany the rookies to Elsinore for spring training, returned to Anaheim last night. Because of the severe injury received to a finger of his right hand in Sunday's game, he will not report again until the middle of next month. If his hand is not completely recovered by that date, he will be given a week's longer leave of absence. His many Anaheim friends and supporters feel for him in his keen disappointment that the injury, occurring just at this time, has in this way handicapped his promising baseball career. LIVE PROGRAM OF FIGHTS TONIGHT The boys are all ready for the big fistic doing tonight at the Athletic club's arena. Billy Darnley has a real live program. Dave Ross, Joe Chaney's gratwhile manager, is out with the statement that his boy is going to show unusual speed as well as a K. O. wal-lop which he stacks up against clever Jimmy Mussio. It ought to be a hummer of a go as far as class is concerned. Sullor Jack Leo and Soldier Johnny Parrel, in the other main twin, are GRAB TWO DESPITE ERRATIC SHOOTING Despite some very erratic shooting, the Roehm-Sylvester squad won two games from the Colonial Chocolate team, of Long Beach, here last night. The visitors tried hard to give the last game away but the orange pickers refused to take it. Hanson and Heffron rolled a three-game match against Knittley and Myre of Long Beach and defeated NET LEAGUE WIDE OPEN HERE A Anaheim Hi opens the son with playing Fullerton local court April 11. A possesses a large number of this year and expects to be championship squad, both team and freshmen division. The season is run different year as there are fresh which follow the first test but play on Monday, on The boys are all ready for the big fistic doing tonight at the Athletic club's arena. Billy Darnley has a real live program. Dave Ross, Joe Chaney's erstwhile manager, is out with the statement that his boy is going to show unusual speed as well as a K.O. waltop when he stacks up against clever Jimmy Musso. It ought to be a hummer of a go as far as class is concerned. Sailor Jack Leo and Soldier Johnny Parrel, in the other main twin, are to treat the fans to an honest-to-goodness old-fashioned slugging match. Both are rugged, hard hitting 55-pounders. A snappy affair is predicted when Kid Louie, Dashy Plecentia banty, and "Irish Jimmy" Clayton mix. Both are fast and willing workers. Clayton is making his initial appearance at the local arena and he comes well recommended. Louie is in the best shape in months. In the preliminaries, Darnley has some good material lined up. "Honolulu Johnny" Nandes meets another tough one in Young Duffy at 125 pounds. Battling Doty hooks up with Lien Davies at 142 pounds while Young Lee tangles with Frankie Picco at 105 pounds. The attendance is expected to be unusually good tonight an judging by the advance sale, a banner crowd seems assured. The first bout will go on at 8:30 sharp. Billy Darnley will referee all bongs. MAIL THEM EARLY AND SAVE $5 FINE In an appeal to taxpayers to file their income returns early, issued yesterday by Collector of Internal Revenue Rex Goodell, it was pointed but that last March three thousand taxpayers who failed to file on time were penalized $5 each and five per cent added to the tax due. In addition, to this more than 13,000 incorrect returns were filed, of which fully 80 per cent were returns hastily prepared and filed at the last minute. These 15,000 seventh-hour filers were not only required to visit the Internal Revenue Bureau and explain certain items in their returns, but in many cases additional taxes and penalties were imposed. This loss of time and money might have been avoided had the taxpayer filed his return early and not have waited until the eleventh hour in begin its preparation, Collector Goodell said. GRAB TWO DESpite ERRATIC SHOOTING Despite some very erratic shooting, the Roehn-Sylvester squad won two games from the Colonial Chocolate team, of Long Beach, here last night. The visitors tried hard to give the last game away but the Orange pickers refused to take it. Hanson and Heffron rolled a three-game match against Knittley and Myre of Long Beach and defeated them by 30 pins. Heffron's 216 and 559 were the best marks of the league match. Last evening there was a large crowd present. This troop boasts 28 members. Paul Neja is master. The boys planned an evening of first aid work, signaling, and tent pitching in the near future. There will also be a second class scout test soon. The diversion of the evening was the boxing matches. In the John Eley, Jr., Billy Grafton bolt, a decision was rendered. Harold Sliger was reported to be taking his weekly nap and thus John Heilde was the victor. John Heilde went unnoticed. Lawrence Ennis and this called a draw. Draw decided to be the most popular and were given the Billy Grafton vs. Gus Lenain; and Zues Ohon-Blek Lusk affairs. Jack Schroeder won over his km. Lee Shroder. Gus Lenain succeeded in awarding a K.O. to Raymond Dickman. Howard Merrill referred all the bouts. Yesterday the 18th anniversary of Rotary International was observed. The club was not actually organized until June 18, 1905 at Chicago. It now has a membership of $7,000 scattered among 26 different counties in 1367 clubs. Up to 1911 it was national only. Dr. Herbert A. Johnston, Ray Eliot, Rev. Thomas H. Walker, secretary; and Dr. H. D. Newkirk were a charge of the program. The main talk of the meeting was delivered by C. C. Hartranft, who discussed the principles, objects and code of business ethics of Rotary. C. F. Leonard, Ray Elliot and a local newspaperman were other speakers.
