WAGE RELENTLESS WAR ON CRIME HERE
Los Angeles County has an unenviable reputation throughout the state and country, because of the startling number of atrocious crimes committed here. The impression is being created that life and property are not safe. The number of shocking crimes, of late gives color to this impression. The conviction is growing too, that desperate criminals come because they find conditions favor them in their nefarious work. Policing in Los Angeles is not what it should be—this is acknowledged by all who are conversant with the conditions there. The county jail is anything but a credit. And procedure in criminal courts here does not overwea the criminal. Too often desperadoes escape arrest or, arrested, escape punishment by jury disagreements or legal technicalities.
Truth is, a great big- sweeping housecleaning is needed in Los Angeles county—herole and sustained measures to make the law feared and respected by the lawless. To the "powers that be" falls primary responsibility for making conditions better. But the people must help by suggestions, by support, by co-operation in every practicable manner possible. It is the people's business and should receive the people's attention. The public should not pass the responsibility altogether on the police, the constabulary and the courts.

What Movie Man Did With Wilson’s Idea
Woodrow Wilson set forth an idea in his book "The New Freedom". John Arthur Nelson caught the "Idea" and wrote a big American novel around it. An ingenious movie producer translated the story to the screen, and gave the production a Broadway premier, with the result that, New York gladly stood in line to pay two dollars to see a photoplay that contained something else besides the old problem of "whether he gets her or she gets him.
What was the "Idea"? The answer will be waiting at "The New Disciple" beginning a two days engagement at the Fairyland starting tomorrow.
It's not like anything you have ever seen before. Don't miss it you can't afford to. A dramatic appeal to the conscience of the American people. A two-fisted modern industrial dramatic masterpiece that will make you wonder and think.

Saving money is a termination, not of incarnation. Many save money outweighs meager incomes and in great odds; many handsome incomes, wasting single penny from one the next.

NEW YORK, Feb. 20. We have grown accustomed to seeing—and wearing—sport clothes almost everywhere; and I have seen some frocks at afternoon teas this winter which would have blushed to show themselves before the electrolayers were lighted a season or two ago; but never until the other sweeping, did I see evening clothes on the ice. There is a skating rink in the theatrical district which has been attracting some enthusiasm to drop in for a half hour or so before the theatre, and the other evening there were half a dozen girls there in full evening dress, ready to go on to an apparently very dressy theatre-party. Chiffons and gold scarfs didn't seem entirely harmonious with the heavy skating shoes they had to put on; but certainly those who complain of our growing informality of attire ought to have taken heart.
Probably as long as he lives, one New York man will berate himself for the opportunity of his life lost. He'll never have another such one. He was just one of the many pedestrians who were trying their best to get home on one of our slippery, sloppy nights, without being either run over or splashed beyond recognition by the skidding taxis. Along came one of the most reckless of those chauffeurs, whirling around a corner without a degree of slow-up or signal and it was almost a miracle that the pedestrian got out of his way. He could have killed the chauffeur that minute without a second's hesitation—or so he thought. A doubly policeman saw his narrow escape and stopped the taxi.

Little Talks on Thrift

Saving money is a matter of determination, not of income.
Many save money out of the most meager incomes and in the face of great odds; many others, with handsome incomes, waste their gold-single penny from one year’s end to the next.
It is one of the truths of life that those who cannot learn to save on a small income will not do so on a large one.
In an obscure corner of a prominent newspaper reference was made recently to a New York elevated guard who, out of his modest earnings, had during 25 years saved sufficient to give him a fixed income of $1,000 a year from his investments.
This is but one instance in thousands upon thousands of cases where substantial sums have been built up from slow, patient savings.
In no phase of life is the spirit of procrastination more harmful than in the matter of thrift.

New York theatricals. Competing with Broadway and attempting to produce long runs with casts picked up at the moment of beginning rehearsals, it has yet managed to establish itself as a sound financial success and at the same time, an "art theatre".
Thieves grow more and more discriminating and dilileent. One has just stolen Oscar Wilde's translation of the poem, "The Artist's Dream" by Mine. Helena Modjeska, the noted Polish actress. The book, believed to be the only one in existence, was owned by her son, Ralph Modjeska, bridge builder, of 121 East Thirty-eighth street.
The fact that the Passion Play is in itself a religious service has not saved it from the displeasure of the campaigners who are trying to stop Sunday theatricals on New York City and its suburbs. For nine years, the Holy Roman Catholic church of Union Hill, N. J., has presented the Passion Play during the Lenten season. Now, Recorder Hauenstein of Union Hill has ordered Rev. J. N. Grief, pastor of the church, to be produced in court by the chief of police to answer to the charge of "giving Sunday shows". "But the Passion Play is a religious service," said Father Grief. "It's just as much a show as any of the others," replied the recorder.

Which is it, He or I? asked Charlie Chaplin doubtfully, appreciating the humor of the situation. A Charlie Chaplin comedy without a camera to film it was being staged in the law office of Isador Morris, and Chaplin has been asked to pass upon photoplays of Amador, who has annexed duplicates of the big shoes, derby hat and flexible cane.
Chaplin is suing Amador and under the process of law had to visit the offices of Morris, and answer questions in the form of a deposition.
"Do you contend that these photographs are perfect: Morris asked, showing to the famous comedian the three photographs of Amador attached to Chaplin's complaint. Chaplin was puzzled as to whether the photographs were his or Amador's and stated that the makeup was perfect.
By special arrangement, Mr. Murray, manager of the United States theater, has booked Charlie Chaplin in the much disputed makeup, for Tuesday and Wednesday the 20th and 21st. See for yourself why Chaplin fears his competition.
