EXPLOIT CALIFORNIA AT NEW YORK SHOW As a direct follow-up of the national advertising and publicity campaigns, California is now preparing to carry its exploitation efforts directly to the millions of prospects in the New York metropolitan arena. Arrangements have been completed whereby the Second Annual Travel Show has awarded to the California Development Association exclusive charge of the Golden State's participation in the big show to be held in April in the Grand Central Palace. The exposition is under the direction of the Travel Club of America. A large area in one of the most advantageous sections of the "See America First" division has been reserved for this State's display. The Development Association is now preparing to extend a state-wide invitation to civic and commercial organizations to join in the display of industrial, commercial and scenic. The California Development Association was chosen to sponsor the Golden State's display because of its state-wide character and experience. A part of the plan will be to establish at the exposition an information bureau where literature covering all parts of California will be distributed and where any questions regarding the state will be answered. The attendance of several hundred thousand visitors to the show is expected. With twenty-two foreign nations participating, as well as numerous states, the exhibition will take on a truly international character. Because of the widespread publicity that has been given California the last few months, it is believed that great numbers of interested Easterners will avail themselves of this opportunity of securing first hand information on the "Land of Opportunity." Sensibility starts where foolishness ends but it takes a wise man to find the line of demarcation. TALKING TOO MUCH IS RUSSIA'S EVIL MOSCOW, Feb. 16.—One of the greatest obstacles the leading men of the present Russian regime are compelled to combat is embedded in the Russian character itself—slowness at work and an undying lust for talk with an unthinkable swiftness of the tongue. Even the smallest incident of daily routine is being discussed at length. All such discussions are accompanied with explosive outbursts. However, most of the department chiefs—not to speak of the commissioners themselves—either speak English, French or German, or if not they have some one commanding one of these languages or all of them at hand. WOMAN 125, DIES ATLANTA, Ga., Feb. 16.—Eveline Booth, a negro woman of Oglethorpe county, Georgia, is dead at the age of 125 years, 9 months and 11 days, according to information made public by Dr. A. Davis, director of the department of vital statistics of the state board of health. Justice Glenn reports that the date of her birth, March 3, 1797, has been handed down among her folks from child to child for more than 100 years. She is recorded as a member in good standing of the Mt. Zion church for the last 115 years. Lieved that great numbers of interested Easterners will avail themselves of this opportunity of securing first hand information on the "Land of Opportunity." A report coming authoritative source Bandini Petroleum passed the 5200 swing well. It is the showings which couraging, and the expense is being ing of core samples very close watch... LAYNE & BOWLER CORPORATION 900 Santa Fe Ave., Los Angeles J. B. Lafourcade of Cucamonga says: "I own 480 acres of grapes. Previous to 1920 I cared for them by dry-farming. In 1920 I installed a Layne & Bowler Pump, set at 525 feet—the deepest set pump in California. In 1921 the increased yields and quality of fruit made possible by irrigation more than paid the cost of the entire installation—in fact the first year's increase earned me over $20,000." J. R. Calif. A few months ago the company established a world record for Huntington Beach by the bringing in of a 4000 barrel well at 4949. Now the Amalgamated leads the producers at Santa Fe Springs with a completion of Butterworth 4 at 4852. While the Butterworth producer is not a big well it is nothing to lose sight of at 2400 barrels. Tscheppe No. 1 at 4828 is making preparations to go on production. Dalluge No. 1 the well that thrilled the field several months ago at 4 and 5 thousand barrels in the Bell sand is going down to the Meyer. The Associated Oil Company will be identified with Santa Fe Springs development henceforth. The Association has just closed a deal for the much sought Clark property recently proved to production by the Elliot Petroleum Company's high gravity test well. Many big and flattering offers were made by companies large and small for the 55 acre Clark property. The fact that the Associated offer was accepted leads to the belief that it carries a big bonus and a generous royalty. Drilling on the south side of the field will largely depend on what the Are-Bee Syndicate finds in its test well now drilling close to 4700. At 4660 some favorable oil showings were claimed. The success of the Are-Bee and surrounding wells seem to hinge on either the continuation of the Springs field or a new structure. Many oil experts do not hold the idea of either a new structure or a continuation and their contents will be watched with interest as the Are-Bee proceeds. A report coming from a seemingly authoritative source has it that the Bandini Petroleum Company has passed the 5200 mark on the Nor-swing well. It is understood that the showings while not big are encouraging, and that much time and expense is being devoted to the taking of core samples and keeping a very close watch over the formation HEAVY INCREASE IN BEACH PRODUCTION With Oil Operators Huntington Beach came in for substantial production increases last week when the Globe, Holly, and Standard Oil companies brought in big producers. The Globe started the good work early in the week with a 1275 barrel well completed at a depth of 4880 at No. 2. This is the second big well for the Globe and gives it a nice daily production now. The Holly Oil Company has hit the stride of big production now and has its second well on production at 2600 barrels. The second Holly producer was completed at 4800 feet and is making a 24 gravity product. E. J. Miley is not going to be cheated out of the big product at Huntington Beach. His State Consolidated No. 1 at 4325 is showing oil and has its indications of making one of the big wells that is now characterizing the northwest section. Mille came into Huntington Beach when the field opened, put State Consolidated No. 1 down into the first sand and got along with others a small well. The Standard Oil Company was rewarded with a nice well at Huntington B-16 when a 3000 barrel well was completed at 4371. The big producer is making 27 gravity oil and is one of the nicest wells of the east section of the field. Standard's F-2 at 5010 was a sufficient showing of oil to warrant a producer and will set a string of 8% casing. Other deep wells of the Standar that are of interest are Pacific 1-A, Farngworth 1 and Talbert 1. These wells are making splendid progress and they are all looking good enough to relieve the worry and anxiety about new territory. The Chansler-Canfield scored with the new production at Torrence last week. The new producer is located on the Del Amo the discovery property of the field. Del Amo No. 3 was finished at 3500 feet and is making 225 barrels. The Fullerton Oil company is cleaning out its first producer Waddell No. 1 at 3500 and will try to increase the production. EX-KAISER FORGETS FORMER ARROGANCE BERLIN—Exile has mats the former kaiser thankful for small favors. The former war lord, who during his reign was accessible only to the favored few, now is glad to receive kind words from men in all walks of life. This is true, especially since friendly messages are running vary low since big marriage to Princess Schoenelacholath, which was a heavy blow to the monarchists. One of his favorite former aid camps, Colonel von Kleist, works in Berlin. Colonel Kleist having received an invitation to the wedding in Doorn, when asking for a leave from the bank, asked the manager if he should offer his congratulations to the ex-kaiser. The manager declared he thought this unnecessary, as the former ruler would care little about him, but that the colonel might do so if he liked. Two days after the wedding the manager received a letter from Kleist, saying the kaiser was greatly touched by his kind greetings. Within two days more, the manager received a letter from the kaiser chamberlain in Doorn, with an autographed photograph of Welheim, dated November 5—the wedding day. The Fullerton Oil company is cleaning out its first producer Waddell No. 1 at 3500 and will try to increase the production of the well. The General Petroleum deep well Van Lew No. 1 drilled to over 4600 feet did not make the showing expected and is plugging back to locate some water trouble. New concerns starting development work in the Torrence field recently are the Hug Oll Company, Geo. F. Getty, and the Orange County Drilling Company. The Standard Oil Company is starting a third well on the Torrence Community lease. The Union's Weston well is down some 3500 feet and is not deep enough yet to make any determination. Hermosa Beach will now be getting a share of the oil developers attention. The McKeon Drilling Company has spudded in on the Wilkes extension of the Torrence field and the drilling will be interesting. "YANKEE CULTURE" FALLS UPON ENGLAND LONDON, Feb. 16. — A second attack of "Yankee Culture" is decend- ing upon England. Will the "tight little Isle" weather this new storm of America humor, speeches, current events which comes flying across the Atlantic nightly? English amateur wireless operators are picking up the broadcasts of the Atlantic coast stations in America. Newark, N. J., is most often heard. This influx of the essence of American life might turn the scale against the protagonists of the "England for English ideas" school. BOILER HERMIT CALL EX-KAISER COUSIN CAINESVILLE, Fla., Feb. 16. — Living in an abandoned locomotive boiler near here is an aged hermit, who declares himself to be a cousin of the exiled kaiser of Germany. The hermit, who answers to the name of Mueller, says that he left Germany in 1881. He says that he and his cousin, the kaiser, could never get along together as the "Wilhelm was too harsh and fond of war." Subsisting on roots and game that he kills himself, the self-asserted cousin of the German war lord declared his boiler home is the "finest in the land." WHAT'S TO BE DONE WITH THE CASHIER BERLIN, Feb. 16. — A local bank robbed of 12,000,000 marks by a defraulating cashier, has recovered 60,-000,000 marks—the balance after the balance after the cashier had spent part of the money. The 12,000,000 marks was in American, French, Belgian, Dutch and Polish money. That was in September. The cashier has just been arrested, and confessed to hiding part of the money in the garden of his home. This was found, and is worth a trifle over 40,000,000 marks at present exchange rates. 28 NEW WELLS STARTED Oil field operations reported the week ending Feb. 10, show 26 new wells started, compared with 40 previous week.
