"TO HAVE AND TO HOLD" AT CALIF. Mary Johnston's brilliant novel of Old Virginia and the court of King James I of England, "To Have and To Hold," has been picturized for Paramount by George Fitzmaurice with splendid results. This tremendous production will be the feature attraction at the California Theater beginning tomorrow. A remarkable cast of principals includes Betty Compson as "Lady Jocelyn Leigh," Bert Lytell as "Captain Ralph Percy," Theodore Kosloff as "Lord Carnal," Raymond Hatton as "King James I," W. J. Forguson as "Jeremy Sparrow" and Arthur Rankin as "Lord Robert Cecil." The eminence of these players needs no comment. Mr. Lytell makes his bow before Paramount audiences in this vehicle, the part of "Captain Ralph Percy" being considered particularly suited to the qualities of the popular star. Oulida Bergere in her adaptation has faithfully followed Miss Johnston's story. The luxurious court of James I is shown in all its magnificence. Ben Johnson and the Duke of Buckingham are other noted historical characters who appear in this sequence. Also high-lighted are the scenes aboard the pirate ship and the fight with a British merchant vessel, culminating in the blowing up of the corsair craft. The story tells of Lady Jocelyn Leigh, whom Lord Carnal, favorite of the King, seeks in marriage. To escape a match with the dandified, odious Carnal, Jocelyn takes the place of her maid who is going to Jamestown, one of a hundred girls destined as wives for the settlers in the Virginia colonies. Alarmed at the seemingly large quantities of "dope" coming into the country through the various ports of the Atlantic and Pacific seaboards, treasury officials ordered all importations stopped until the federal narcotic control board determines just what is "a proper amount" for medical and legitimate needs. SCORES SEE NEW DOBLE STEAM CAR Scores today saw the new Doble steam car at Hubbell & Wimmer's Palage garage. Abner Doble, inventor and president of the company which is manufacturing it, was in charge of the demonstrations. "Keep the home fires burning, While your hearts are yearning, Though the boys are far away, they dream of home. There’s a silver lining, Through the dark clouds shining, Turn the dark clouds inside out till the boys come home." There's a duty still before us Though the war's fierce glare is dead. Tis to keep the Home Fires Burning In the days of trial ahead. Let each Bureau member’s ardor Show the old clear, steady flame For the service of his fellows, As when war's stern summons came. Mr. Swanson does not believe that the motive was ransom, but thinks it probable that it was a gypsy band who desired the child to keep. The child that it was a woman, saying that a woman hurt her hand which investigation proved had been pierced, and someone that to have been a Mexican woman was seen standing on the railroad tracks a short time before. The mother saw someone who looked like a woman, step off the curb after the child screamed, but an umbrella was pulled down and Mrs. Swanson was not able to see the face. Little was that of the matter until the child became sick, and the father found a bundle of hypodermic needles among the child's toys. The child is said today to have practically Measure To Enforce Coal Deliveries BERLIN, Feb. 1.—Franco-Belgian measures to enforce German coal deliveries reached completion of their first stage early today. At the same time German customs stations which formerly had served for collections on goods entering the country from Belgium, France and Luxemburg were taken over entirely by the French.
