AUTOMOBILE SECTION VOL. XXVI—NO. 140 RACE BOARD MAGNATE ARRIVES LOS ANGELES, Jan. 27.—The arrival in Los Angeles this week of William Schimpf, chairman of the contest board of the American Automobile Ass'n, controlling all matters pertaining to the motor racing sport, definitely places Los Angeles to the force as one of the two greatest speedway centers in the country. Schimpf, accompanied by his wife, arrived in Los Angeles early during the week for a lengthy stay, probably until several days after the February 250-mile race on the Beverly bowl. Making his headquarters at the local speedway offices, he will be in consecutive conferences over racing questions with A. M. Young, secretary-manager of the local track association. Work on the steel speed chariots goes on in obscure fashion in garages, shops, and parts building plants all over Los Angeles. While the rain held up practice spins for the past few days, the boys are all working hard getting their mounts in shape. They promise faster and cleaner sport for the February meet than the fans have ever been treated to. NEW AUTO MEASURE HAS STRONG SUPPORT Rigid tests of the physical and mental fitness of all would-be auto operators will be required if a bill introduced this week by Senator Arthur H. Breed, president pro-tem of the Senate, is passed. Breed's measure is backed by the State administration, the California Farm Bureau Federation, the County Supervisors' Ass'n, the California State Automobile Ass'n and the California Peace Officers' Ass'n. Other features of the bill are Flat registration fee of $2 instead of a horsepower tax which Breed says would raise the income from this source from $6,500,000 to $9,500,000 and distribute the tax burden equitably; making it a misdemeanor with a jail sentence of not less than five days to operate while a license is suspended; endorsement by the courts of all convictions on the back of operators' license; empowering the Motor Vehicle Department to withhold licenses from persons unable to exercise reasonable control over machines; extending time from 24 hours to five days within which non-residents may register; fixing 28,000 pounds gross weight for four-wheel vehicles and 30,000 for six-wheel, except by special permit of the State Highway Commission; permitting only one trailer or semi-trailer; reducing width of vehicles from 102 to 96 inches; and suspending licenses 30 days on first conviction, 60 on second and sixth months on third for Making his headquarters at the local speedway office, he will be in consecutive conferences over racing questions with A. While the rain held up practice spins for the past few days, the boys are all working hard getting their mounts in shape. They promise faster and cleaner sport for the February meet than the fans have ever been treated to before. Harry Miller, internationally known for the performance of cars that he built during the past two racing seasons in setting up the fastest marks that gars of the type have ever been known to touch, is supervising work on several of the mounts. He expects greater results than ever from the Miller straight-eight motor, with the perfected double-overhead camshaft valve action, during the coming 250-mile race, because of the keen competition in the last event. The measure is a companion one to a new general motor vehicle bill introduced also this week by Breed. FREQUENT WASHINGS Frequent washings dull the finishish of a car. BOON SPEED A "BOON" TO THE MOTOR CYCLE GAME 'SIGN-'A-MILE' AUTO CLUB SLOGAN A sign-a-mile on the transcontinental routes leading into Southern California is the slogan adopted and put into effect by the Auto Club of So. Calif., for the marking of the roads leading from the East to this part of the country. According to a report issued yesterday by Automobile Club officials, all road signs on transcontinental routes are now in perfect repair, following a season of sign posting work just completed by club crews. This will be good news for motorists traveling either east from California or west to California from the east. All sign posting work on the inland route to San Francisco has been completed from Los Angeles to the Fresno county line. New signs have also just been erected on the connecting road between the coast and inland roads from Famosa to Paso Robles. Chart notes and new signs are now being made for marking the coast route from Southern California to the Monterey county line. Starting Monday all roads in San Bernardino and Riverside counties will be charted. (By The Mysterious Cowboy) MANY years ago Mr. W. H. Boon who conducts the motorcycle and bicycle shop at 125 South Los Angeles street, turned his attention to the steam engine—it was his calling. In time we find him a steam engineer and he remained such until the day the great gasoline engine came into such universal use. Mr. Boon could see at a moment that his next place must be with the gasoline engine and so in a short time he is a full-fledged gasoline engineer, engaged around pumping and hoisting engines. For seven years prior to coming to Anaheim he followed the engineering trade. Back in 1911 Mr. Boon was looking about for a new field and a place with a future to it. He struck Anaheim and he was in business for himself in this city in 1914. Since then he has been the reliable friend of the motorcyclist and the bicycle rider. At his neat little shop he specializes in motorcycle and bicycle repair, in welding he is an expert at this art and he does all kinds of general machine work. He is a most thorough mechanic himself and he has competent help. It is the house of service for those who own motorcycles and bicycles. Mr. Boon knows the motorcycle like a few other men know it. He knows of its strength and of its weakness. He knows of its vast usefulness and he knows of its great popularity with the American public. He handles the best of motorcycles—the Harley-Davidson, the Indian and the Excelsior. If that is not what is wanted he can supply you your exact requirements. He has a complete line of fine tires for both the motorcycle and the bicycle. His fine of second hand cycles have been overhauled by his own competence and some very attractive offerings are there in these things. Motorcycling has come into such great vogue during the last five years that our highways are always active with them. Many use them for pleasure but they have won a place for themselves in many useful occupations. What would the speeding policeman do without this swift vehicle; the messengers are most competent in service on a motorcycle; farmers use them to some extent for the single business of transporting oneself to a town or city—in fact they offer a variety of useful activities that we cannot ignore either east from California or west to California from the east. Starting Monday all roads in San Bernardino and Riverside counties will be charted for renovation work on the signing activity in Orange, San Diego and Imperial ounties. Motorists will be glad to learn that road marking between Mecca and Blythe has also just been completed. New signs are now in place from Blyte to the Imperial Valley via Wiley and Beall's Wells—a distance of about 66 miles. On the National Old Trails route leading from the east to California via Kansas City, the Auto. Club has placed 500 signs over a distance of a little more than 2500 miles and including the branches of this route, which is sometimes known as the Santa Fe trail. Tractor School To Draw Hundreds Here Hundred of ranchers will attend the second annual tractor school to be held here Jan. 29-Feb. 3. The school, according to an announcement today, will be held on Perry Rust's ranch at North Palm and Sycamore-stu. Consequently the attendance of Anaheimers is expected to be especially large. George Dunton declared today that he had sent a circular letter to all of the 446 Fordson owners in the county to whom he has sold the machine, urging them to attend. Most of the troubles of tractor owners come from ignorance of the machine and its operation, said Dunton. The school is under the auspices of the Agricultural Extension Service of the University of California, E. J. Sirlman in charge. Two hours per day will be given to lecture-demonstrations of fuels, carburetor adjustment, magneto and ignition troubles, lubrication, tractor management, etc. Shop work will occupy the other six hours. The later work consists, first, of bench repairing, babbiting and scraping of bearings, valve grinding, soldering and piston ring fitting; secondly, adjusting, trouble shooting and operation of new or overhaulied tractors; thirdly, the overhauling of used gas engines and tractors. The purpose of the school is to give as much practice as possible in necessary adjusting and repairing of WILLARD SERVICE STATION Anaheim Ignition Depot Oldest Automobile Electrical House In Anaheim Established 1912 218 So. And the bicycle is still popular—it is useful and it is most healthful. Boon has them all—their tires and their accessories. His service is of the best class. Verify Description Of Car For License "In preparation for the renewal of your automobile license for 1923, it would be wise for the motorist to look at his certificate, see that his address is correct, verify his engine number, and see that the certificate correctly describes his car in every detail," says Wm. H. Marsh, chief of the division of motor vehicles. If it does not do so, he should either by mail with the Sacramento office, or in person at one of the branches, have necessary corrections made. It the certificate has been lost, or is illegible, he should make application for duplicate, which will be furnished him upon payment of fee of 50c. "If he has a second hand car upon which the transfer from the former owner to himself has not been recorded, he should have this done before presenting certificate for 1923 reenewal. If certificate shows a legal owner other than the registered owner and he had satisfied the indebtedness on his car during the year, he should have his certificate properly endorsed on the reverse side by the former legal owner. It is not sufficient that he scratch the name from the space provided for legal owner. This action will only result in delay in his registration. "Non-resident owners whose licenses have expired during the month of January will be given a continuation of three months in 1923 provided they desire to further tour the state." RUBBER AND FABRIC UP AGAIN Crude rubber has gone up five per cent and fabric used in the Manufacture of tire casing five cents per pound since the recent advance in prices of casings, tubes and tire repair materials, and the likelihood of a further boost of 10 per cent in prices is stronger than ever, according to local distributors. Crude rubber, while fluctuating slightly, has been selling at 36 cents per pound. The other feature of the tire situation is that the independents with a quantity of raw material still on hand, are pressing a temporary advantage, holding price unchanged. Some independents have gotten into line with the standard manufacturers, but not many. Casings that in August last cost $17.50 now bring $16.85, dealers point out, showing that even yet, despite the uninterrupted rise of raw materials, the market is not normal.
