LARGE SIZE FRUIT IN DEMAND ABROAD Large sizes are in demand in the United Kingdom even more than in the United States, according to cables reaching the Anaheim Valencia Orange Growers. The London representative of the California Fruit Grower Exchange would not recommend shipments of 100s or 126s. A few cars of cranges sent from New York to Liverpool have realized 15 to 17 shillings, or $3.45 to $3.90. Higher prices would be obtained by medium sized fruit, but not satisfactory because of competition from Spanish valencias and Jaffa oranges. ORANGE-CO. KANSANS TO ATTEND PICNIC More than 10,000 Kansans are in Orange-co today and more coming all the time. These Jayhawkers always go down to the big Kansas Day picnic at Long Beach the 29th of January. It gives a fine chance to booet Orange-co, the banner one of the state and also to meet thousands of the Sunflower State folks. It is tourist reason also and they will be there in force to meet the old friends. All the usual plenic features will be carried out and county registers will help you find the old neighbor... SATURDAY SPECIALS Cherry Nut Cake 25¢ Present Flood Control of Upper Santander, Redlands, Calif. (By George S. Hinckley, City Engineer, Redlands, Calif. (Reprinted from Citrus Leaves) The flood control of the upper Santa Ana River has been recently commented by the three counties thru which the river passes. This work is being carried on in such a way that the waters held back at storm times will not only reduce the peak of the runoff but that all the water thus held back will later appear as surface or underground flow and be put to beneficial use. The appropriation made by the counties for this work is very small in comparison with the great work which is to be accomplished, and the supervisors of these counties well realize that it will take considerable time for $6000 annually to make any considerable impression on the flood waters of a heavy storm. It is the plan to so carry out the work that the little that is accomplished each year will be so constructed that the works will be of service year after year and that additional areas will be added each year. For this reason work has been commenced in the uppermost reaches of the water shed and the works will be constructed in such a manner as to gather the storm waters before they have accumulated into large streams. These waters will then be taken out of their natural channels and diverted to areas and canyons where the surplus waters can be sunk into the gravel beds by means of check dams and surface spreading. If there were several reservoir sites of the capacity of Bear Valley Lake (72,000 acre feet) in the upper reaches of the river, our flood and conservation problems would be very greatly simplified. Since there are no such dam sites along the upper reaches of the river or its tributaries the most practical proposition seems to be to store the surplus waters in the gravel beds along the course of the river. The water thus stored travels slowly thru these gravels and can be made available for beneficial use. During the past winter about 185... Center St. During the past winter about 185,000 acre feet of surplus storm runoff was spread and sunk into the gravels of the Santa Ana river and its tributaries near the base of the San Bernardino mountains. This work has been carried out by private water companies and the storage in the debris cones at the mouth of the canyons has been found to have a very considerable effect on the maintaining of a higher pump level throut these basins. These works are, however, conservation works only and in most cases are not prepared to handle water at the peak of a flood in any larger quantities than at other times, and in some cases handle no water at all at the peak since the water carries so much silt at that time that it is injurious to the spreading area in Our every days prices are specials, but on Saturday we offer EXTRAORDINARY BARGAINS 24-oz. WANTS GERMANY IN LEAGUE OF NATIONS BERLIN, Jan. 26.—Count Johann von Bernstorff, former German ambassador to the United States, advocates the entrance of Germany into the league of nations. Writing in his magazine, "Democratic Germany," Bernstorff, who has been in Geneva during the last meeting of the league, says he sees no reason why Germany "should not accept the invitation of England to go to Geneva." "Even if we admit," Bernstorff writes, "all the sins and shortcomings of the league, it must be borne in mind that we have to suffer just as much injustice from the other lovely institutions of the Entente, whether they are called supreme council, ambassors' conferences or reparations committee. Yet we are obliged to deal and confer with them because any other action would mean suicide. The fight for justice must be the watchword of German politics. After having accepted the invitation to Genoa, I do not see why we should not accept the invitation of England to go to Geneva. "We would simply have to answer that we are willing to come if England sees to it that we can enter without our dignity being hurt." S. P. A permit for the new packing house was not taken out until last week, although the work of excavating and putting in the foundations had been begun more time ago. The new packing house is to cost $19,000. Plain Dealer Want Ads Get Results This store is eleven years old, Now old are you? Ask some of our customers about me.
