BUICK LIKE NEW AFTER 40,000 MILES The history of a seven-passenger Buick touring car is well worth recording, because it feels its own story in a most congenial manner. This car was sold by George Waterman of Waterman Bros., Fresno, to J. J. Phelan of Fresno, on May 1, 1922 and since that time has rolled up 40,726 miles, being driven over a newspaper route through the oil fields of California, averaging over 153 miles daily, the actual distance that must be covered in making the run. Bill Goodrun, local distributor issued the story. Phelan is one of the most enthusiastic Buick boosters imaginable and he has a perfect right to be judging from the enviable record that the car already has made. Phelan says the original tires are on the four wheels of the Buick and they are in good shape, and that the gasoline and oil average has been phenomenal, as he has been getting 18 miles to each gallon of gasoline and that 1120 miles is the average for three plints of oil. An accurate check is made by Phelan of the expense of operating the Buick on its daily run, and he says that it is operated more economically and gives much better satisfaction in every way than any other automobile which has been used in covering this newspaper route. The run from Fresno to Coalinga via Riverdale, Oil Fields and Lemore is made with a heavy load of newspapers which Phelan says make a dead weight of at least half a ton and that a car must be sturdily constructed, and easy riding in order to stand the daily grind. From the day that Phelan bought the car until January 5, the Buick has been operating daily over this route. The car still looks and acts like new. Nash Sales in County Second of Southland December was a record sales month Used Car Should Be Reliable: Cromer "The purchaser of a used car should have the same definite assurance of service that the purchaser of a new car has," according to C. W. Cromer, branch manager of Dale & Company, Packard and Reo distributors. "The time has gone by when a car can be sold without some sort of evidence of capacity," continued Cromer in effect. "And this applies not only to the mechanism of the car, but to its battery, ignition and tires." Cromer instances a re-conditioned 1920 which is practically guaranteed for 15,000 miles. The branch manager points to F. W. Smith, local cement contractor who has been driving a 1914 Reo ever since he purchased it new nine years ago, as evidence of the way the Reo stands up. 2,582 INSPECTIONS ARE MADE OF DODGE Quantity production has not resulted in careless construction of the Dodge ar, says Charley Mann, local distributor. The manufacturers in a statement just received declare that the 2,582 different inspections are made of the materials and parts that go into the car. The raw materials are selected with the utmost care, and examined both before they reach the finished stage and afterward. The assembly similarly is inspected again and again, to see that no imperfection has been left or flaw caused in manufacture. The number of inspections corresponds to the number of men employed who examine materials and work, says Mann. The starling system and carburetion of the Dodge these days is winning high praise, because even in the dampest or coolest weather the same smooth response greets the driver. Close fitting curtains opening with the doors ensure comfort the year. STATE DEPARTMENT Followin' posed to California Richardson Motor Yard big step in parment. Sales were the largest of any county in So. Cal. except Los Angeles. Improvements on the car made this possible, says White. They include brakes with 54-per cent more service, in fact the most service per 100 pound of any American-built car; new brake equalizer, new system of cross members, new gusseted truss beneath rear tonneau doors which prevents weaving of the frame and practically stops door rattles and refinements in the carburetion, giving a perfect result at all speeds, and adding two to four miles per gallon of gas to the mileage. RILEY SELLS SEVEN CARS PAST WEEK Harry D. Riley reports the sale of new Studebaker cars to the following past week: Dave Vaughn of Anaheim, light six readster; Lyon Realty Co., light six sedan; F. A. Henderson, of Orange, light six sedan; Kay Motor Supply Co., Los Angeles, light six roadster. Others who have purchased cars are S. M. Rogers of Orange, G. B. McVay of Fullerton and Vern Adams of Flacentia. The reason small-town people are more righteous is because it is so much more difficult to get away with anything in a small town. STAR WILL RANK THIRD, PREDICTION Third place in actual registration and not merely in sales as in December is predicted for January for the Star car by James E. Appleby of the Appleby Motor Company. Durant and Star distributors in Orange county. Appleby says he is confident of this forecast in view of the sales already made in January. "We sold 33 cars in December and got registration credit for 20," said Appleby, discussing the discrepancy between the two figures. Walter M. Brown of the Walter M. Brown motors of Los Angeles said: "Never before has a new car been placed on the market and in less than two months displace any member of the so-called big five. It remained for the Star to again set a new mark in the annals of motor history. "But this achievement is but a mite compared with what we have purchased cars are S. M. Rogers of Orange, G. B. McVay of Fullerton and Vern Adams of Flacentia." DODGE BROTHERS MOTOR CAR Winter never fails to bring this car renewed praise. It is because the starting system and carburetor seem to be almost immune from cold weather troubles. The response is prompt, even on the coldest mornings. Winter never fails to bring this car renewed praise. It is because the starting system and carburetor seem to be almost immune from cold weather troubles. The response is prompt, even on the coldest mornings. The cord tires, with their safety tread, are also particularly desirable in winter. Chas. H. Mann 210 So. Richardson, Will H. Marsh, Chief of Motor Vehicles, announces the first big step in retrenchment in his department. This move contemplates the elimination of the inspectors' Department of the Division following out his plan, the department will officially go out of business today. All automobiles, and other equipment, that have been in use by the inspectors through the state, have been called in Marsh, and all employees of that department will be dropped from the payroll on that date except in a few cases where it is found desirable to use some of the employees in other departments of the division. In connection with this retrenchment move, the chief of the division states that he will deputize a few men from the inspector's force for purposes of enforcing registration. The number will probably not exceed three and they will be located, one in Sacramento, one in San Francisco and one in Los Angeles. These men will in no wise be used for traffic or patrol duty. It is the contention of the department head that this feature of enforcement of the Motor Vehicle Act should be left to local authorities. The expense of maintaining a department such as that which will cease to exist next Saturday has been found to be prohibitive. Figures compiled by Marsh set forth that 15 inspectors employed by the division during the past year have cost the department approximately $77,000; 116 inspectors, or two for each county in the state, and operated at like cost would mean an expenditure of $600,000. It is contended that a like number of men employed by the counties at $125.00 per month salary, and with an expense account for motorcycles, gas and oils, and equipment necessary at another $100.00. West Bros. Now In New Building West Bros. got into their new cement offices, shop and garage this week, altho the finishing touches of the removal still are in progress. The building at the corner of Chestnut and South Los Angeles-st., which adjoins the new structure, has been retained for the present, and drivers can enter by the same entrance as before. The new eight-hour charging facilities are in operation, and any battery that isn't a wreck can be re-conditioned on short notice. The battery, carburetor and electrical departments are as complete as any in the county and prompt, efficient service is possible as never before. 30 Miles a Gallon Chevrolet Record The Chevrolet Motor company, in their effort to build an automobile, complete in every detail, have compiled much data regarding economy, comfort and equipment. One of their recent tests on gasoline mileage proved that an average speed of 20 miles per hour on an average boulevard, a Chevrolet superior model would consume one gallon of gasoline. Some cars averaged as high as 31 miles to a gallon of gasoline and others not as much. Another interesting test was made on mountain grades in regard to shifting gears and gasoline consumption on the grades. It was found that the car would use less gas when climbing a stiff grade, if intermediate gear was used. The expression "Jugging the motor" which is nothing more than compelling the motor to work at its limit, was heavily condensed. NASH, FRANKLIN SALES IMPROVING Marked improvement in sales the past week is reported by Ralph White. RECORD RALLY FOR SCOUT CEREMONIES Between 1500 and 2000 people were present last night at the presentation of the eagle badge to four Orange-co scouts at the quarterly scout meeting, held at the Anaheim high school auditorium. This is said to have been the biggest turnout at a scout rally in the history of scout work in the county, 30 scout troops out of the 32 troops in the county being represented, and the parents and friends of the scouts turning out almost en masse. The ceremonies opened shortly past 8 o'clock with a salute and a pledge of allegiance to the flag by the scout guard. This was followed by scout songs under the direction of Roland Dye, scout executive. The members of the court of honor composed of D. Eyman Huff and William Smith of Orange, Mr. Roy S. Horton of Santa Ana, and A. B. McCord of Anaheim were then introduced by Mr. Dye, and the troop roll-call was given; 30 troops out of 32 in the county, representing about 900 of the 1000 scouts in the county, answering 'present." The presentation of the eagle badges was then made. The scouts thus honored were Jack Mattis, of Troop No. 1 of Anaheim; Waldemar Borchard of Troop No. 1 of Orange; Charles Ehrhorn of Troop No. 1 of Newport, and Jack Allen of Troop No. 1 of Newport. This makes 12 eagle scouts in the county, three of them belong in Anaheim. The other two here are Jim FitzGibbons and John Shay. The scout officers hope to have 50 eagle scouts in the county within another year, and to have brot up the scout membership to 1500 which would mean 50 percent of the boys of scout age in the county. Leon O. Whitell, chairman of the county court of honor, was in charge of the presentation. The presentation of the eagle badges was followed by the announcement by President Huff of the annual banquet meeting of the scouts Tuesday night at St. Ann's Ion with $5,000,000 STATE ROAD BONDS SOLD Sale of $5,000,000 State Highway 4/4 per cent bonds by Governor Friend W. Richardson was a feature of the week's developments in the matter of funds for new roads. The Anglo & London Paris National Bank of San Francisco was the purchaser at a premium of $16,200. Charles G. The post-Christmas and New Year's lull appears to be over, and the demand is excellent. Among the recent deliveries of the Bob White company are: Nash four-carriage to Albert Nelson of Fullerton; Nash four touring to Daniel Dakovich to Garden Grove road; Franklin demi-sedan to C. E. Conger of Olive; six cylinder Nash roadster to Albert B. Boyce of Anaheim. FREIGHT RATES ON ABSORBERS REDUCED The freight rate on shock absorbers from Eastern points to the Pacific coast has been reduced markedly by the Southern Pacific. From New York the rate has been cut from $3.30 per 100 to $2.28 and from St. Louis from $3.00 to $1.80. The new rates become effective as soon as the tariffs can be published. And so Detroit will test the sanity of speeders. What better test than the speedometer? THE STAR CAR Do you know that: TWO of the most popular high priced cars use Fedders Radiators? LEGISLATION WILL BETTER RADIOGRAPHY There is before Congress at the present time bills which will clear the air of interference, "By this I mean," says A. Bevillard, "that if the radio enthusiast has been wise and invested in a really good set". There is a fundamental principal; that it is impossible to get something for nothing. If you pay a certain amount for anything from a reliable firm you get value for your money only and you cannot get satisfaction from a cheap radio set any more than you can from a cheap piano. Buy the best and you will not have to apologize to your friends when interference comes in. Mr. Bevillard, will gladly demonstrate. CRUELTY TO ANIMALS VEXES KIND JUDGE DENVER—It is seldom that juvenile Judge Ben Lindsey cannot find sufficient immigration circumstances to warrant lenency toward some members of the numerous youthful "gange" that appear before him, but "turpentinning" dogs is no sport to be encouraged in "Young America," he believes. For the first time in his 20 years on the juvenile bench Judge Lindsey last week sentenced an entire group of seven boys to the state reform school at Golden because they covered a stray dog with turpentine and then set it on fire. The dog was discovered, suffering excruciating pain, and had to be shot by a state hunge officer. Riley, Northern Orange County distributor. It has disc wheels, a spare tire, trunk and trunk rack, bumpers front and rear, motometer, automatic windshield wiper, rear view mirror, sunshade, vanity case, match box and ash tray, flower vase, interior lights, transmission lock, cowl ventilator, courtesy lamp and other features, which make it as convenient and comfortable as possible. The dark brown velour rugs to match the upholstery is very pleasing. The car is equipped with one of the best heaters made, a decided comfort on cold nights. The low, rangy and sporty lines have made a hit among prospects. Dealers are swamped with orders. Riley sold the first one he received to Charles Saunders, north of Fullerton within two days. HINTS BY WALTER ABOUT AUTO TIRES Don't make the mistake of taking it for granted that it makes little difference whether or not a cap is used on the tire valve and when a cap is lots use the tire without one. This idea is entirely erroneous, says S. K. WWalters, of the Anaheim Vulcanizing Works, local representative of the KellySpringfield Tires and motorists who do not use the valve cap can expect valve trouble. When the cap is not used there is every probability that sand and dirt will work down into the valve and ultimately produce a leak. While a tire remains inflated this dirt in some cases may do no harm. But when a new inflation is made the pump drives the dirt down into the valve and makes an air-tight connection almost impossible. In Anaheim, the other scout officer Jim FitzGibbons and the scout officers hope to angle scouts in the county each year, and to have scout membership to 1500 mean 50 percent of the age in the county.
