YOU CAN'T START ANY YOUNGER ORDER SURVEY OF PRADO DAM SITE The agreement of the Water Conservation Committee of Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino co., not to spread storm waters on the gravel cone at the base of the San Bernardino mountains until the water is flowing under the bridge over the Santa Ana river near the County Hospital was the result of one of several recommendations of the Advocacy Committee on water conservation in Orange-co., of which J. F. Ahlborn is chairman. Ahlborn admitted it today. There were several other recommendations made at the same time, including that of a survey of the county's water resources, which also will be done; and an investigation of the Prado dam site. Supervisors already have visited the site. The survey will be made by engineers under the direction of an expert of the U.S. Geological Survey, the county paying the costs. A similar survey of Riverside and San Bernardino counties is likely to be made on the same occasion. ASTRONOMER FINDS MAKEUP OF STARS WASHINGTON, Jan. 19. Contrary to what formerly has been supposed, hot stars and cool stars probably are very nearly the same in chemical composition, Dr. Henry Norris Russell, director of the Princeton University Observatory and research associate of the Mt. Wilson Observatory, declared in an address before the Carnegie Institute of Washington. "Recent physical research has told us so much about the properties of atoms that we have come to a new understanding of what we observe in the stars," said Dr. Russell. "Our knowledge of the composition of the stars depends upon the lines which we observe in their spectrum and which show the presence of many of the familiar chemical elements. No harm to talk it HARGROVE REAL PHONE 109 East Denver Street An Afflicted Mouse (W. E. Allen, California Biological Feature Service) Not long ago Dr. Sumner brought into my room a freshly killed deer mouse which he had recently captured. It was a little smaller than most of his specimens, little, if any, larger than an ordinary house mouse. Under the loose skin of the flank of the little animal, just in front of the thigh, was an enormous tumor or swelling with a tiny opening at one point through which some small object was fitfully thrust out and back. When opened the tumor was shown to contain a "grub" or maggot about one-half inch long and as large around as an ordinary lead pencil. This maggot had been thrusting part of its body out through the skin of its victim in order to breathe. The warble fly (a large fly look-in somewhat like a honey bee) which was its parent probably deposited the egg on the hair of the mouse where it would be, and was, licked off. The egg had probably hatched in the digestive tract and the small maggot had wandered around through the body of the host until it found a satisfactory place for full growth. There it stayed until discovered. Dr. Sumner said that he had found a good many mice afflicted with these small warbles and that some were found to be infected with smaller warble which settled under the loose skin near the ears. Wherefore some ignorant people conclude that wild life is not disturbed by either disease or natural death. Life is strife. Through co-operative effort man has been able to modify that strife so that many persons find life comparatively easy and pleasant while a few are so nearly sheltered from it that they do not even recognize the necessity of strife. So far as the matter of disease is concerned there are individuals in every community who are anxious to destroy co-operative opposition to disease in order to return to what they choose to consider the ideal condition of the unprotected mouse.
