Domesticated fishes; they'll eat right out of your hand, and they wait like lambs to be led to slaughter. Sounds like a pipe dream, but it's an everyday matter on the island of Rota in the Mariana group, about 30 miles north of Guam. The 500 Charmorros natives live principally on fish. Each family has a large prehistoric sinker stone, spherical in shape, flattened at the end, with holes bored clear through. Through the stones is run a stout cord, to which is looped about a half cocoonnut, which lies inverted on the flat surface of the stone. The meat of the cocoonnut is grated before the day's fising begins. Each day the natives go to the reef which encloses the island, each to his allotted place, which never varies and lower the stones into deep water. By jerking on the string the cocoon nut is raised a little from the stone, allowing the meat to ooze from under the shell. The sound made by the shell striking against the stone is the fishes' dinner bell, and they flock in numbers to the reef. This procedure is kept up for weeks, until the fish are considered fattened sufficiently; then they are enriched in the same manner into a net and eaten. Rota is not far from the famous island of Yap, and is now under the control of Japan. LEGAL NOTICE NOTICE OF FILING ASSESSMENT-ROLL NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN.
