VOL. XXVI—NO. 121
STATIONS HIT HEAVILY BY GAS DROP
Gas distributors here were hit heavily by the drop in gasoline prices, according to the owner of a prominent service station. The cut came without any warning in most instances, and dealers were left with a supply of two or three days on their hands, purchased at the old prices. One station kept open until midnight to get rid of its surplus.
Only one prominent company protected its distributors. The Standard gave warning a day in advance, but this company unlike the others distributes from its own stations.
Local service stations anticipate a further reduction rather than a rise later. President Kingsbury of the Standard, however, indicated that the drop was seasonal only and regulated by supply and demand.
Stocks on hand in the state have been increasing at a rapid rate, and oil production in California has jumped 25 per cent the past year.
FIRM TO NAME MANY BRUNSWICK DEALERS
Brunswick tires soon will be offered at practically all points in northern Orange County by Daniels & Williams, who have the distribution.
Don’t Delay Your License Application
Every motorist who is a member of the Auto Club of So. Cal in this locally urged to apply at once at the club office for the proper 1923 license application blanks and not to delay until the last minute. If all auto owners do wait, there will be a final jam which will prevent the smooth handling of the situation at the time when the plates are issued.
Eastern visitors who have been touring California and whose cars were registered during 1922 in another State and who now wish to take out a 1923 registration here should procure a certificate of registration from the state from whence they came and be prepared to prove ownership of their machine when application is requested for registration.
Early application of club members is urged, particularly in the branch office districts, as these applications filed at the branch offices will have to be forwarded to club headquarters to be rated and checked for clearance.
Do not forget that if your certificate of ownership has been lost, destroyed or so mutilated that it cannot be read, you should go once to the club branch and procure a fresh duplicate.

Jordan Satisfies Taste of Critical
The price of a thing is the amount that we exchange for it, not in money, but in personal happiness, comfort and mental satisfaction, says J. E. Walter of the J. E. Walter Co., Jordan distributors.
To the experienced individual the mere fact that undue emphasis is placed upon price inspires caution. The cheapest motor car, therefore, is not that which sells for the least, nor is it that which sells for the most.
It is that which best satisfies our sense of color, gratifies our feelings, does not offend our hearing, passeses an atmosphere that is individual, appeases our good taste, and possesses that rare sixth sense—balance.
EVERY LEXINGTON PURCHASER ROOTER
John Stirrat has purchased a Lexington of T. L. DeCew, local distributor. DeCew’s purchasers, like those of any of the high priced cars, are not so numerous as those of other cars of cheaper make, but every one of them is a rooter for the Lexington.

BIG BEAR ROAD IS IN GOOD SHAPE NOW
The Victorville route to Big Bear is in good condition and there is no snow, according to the latest report of the Auto club of So. Cal. The Waterman canyon road to Arrowhead Lake is in better condition than the new Hesperia route, which is narrow and rather soft. Because of stern ditches the canyon route is rough in places.
The detour below Capistrano on the San Diego route will be reinstalled, if it has not been already this week.
A short detour north of Newhall, where a bridge is being repaired, must be expected. The detour around a bridge east of Santa Paula is in good shape.
Getting nearer home, the Brea canyon road as far as Walnut is in good condition, and pleasure vehicles may use it. The Turnbull canyon road out of Whittier is in good condition, but rough at the other end.
In the Temescal canyon it is necessary to detour below Glen Ivy Hot Springs.

UPPOSE you were called upon to represent and sell the products of the great International Harvester Company in the wealthiest county in the richest country in the world—I mean the most potential county in agriculture. Suppose you were chosen for this position and given carte blanche authority to cater to the entire county in world famous and indispensable farm implements—would you not feel that you were filling an exalted and useful role in the business activity of the great county in which you operated? I think you would, undoubtedly.
I put that question to Mr. M. Eltiste, the one man who distributes the famous International farm machinery in Orange county and he evaded the answer. He did so, I know, not because he is not proud of his worthy station, but because he is too much absorbed in the business of selling farm implements to give any time or thought to personal achievement.
Mr. Eltiste has been identified with the farm implement business in Orange county for the past thirteen years. He knows the requirements of this wealthy county and he knows, too, that farm implements are going to play a mighty part in the future greatness of Orange county. He knows the land; he is conversant with the great productivity of these lands; he is sensible of the steady growth and the needs of the newcomers; he has his hand on the very pulse of the agricultural greatness of the county. And he and his splendid institution are equal to the task for which they have been appointed.
I visited the headquarters of M. L. Eltiste and Co., at Orange and I saw their great stocks of farm machinery, also parts of every description and of great merit and quality, carried both at the store and the warehouse. They have five road salesmen on the job and they have branch houses throughout the county. The International Harvester Company are wide awake to the importance of Orange country and this great concern co-operate with Mr. Eltiste in supplying the every need of the farmers of this district. Mr. Eltiste, likewise realizes the importance of Anaheim in the growth of this district and I wish I had the space to tell of all the nice things he said about the Anaheim spirit. His service is so superior and efficient in matters pertaining to farm machinery that he is kept a very busy man in looking out for his increased business. He makes all adjustments on the ground without delay; two of his travelling men sell tractors exclusively—he is the leader and the most active of any farm implement man in this territory.

2 NEW CALIFORNIA TOPS HERE SHORTLY
Two new California tops are being offered to the public by the Eddy Paint & Top shop. One is called the Boysen support and the other the Elizabeth de luxe.
The former has full sliding glass windows entirely bound in metal, with re-enforced metal bows, heavy bevelled plate glass throut, mounted in Japan metal frames and stationary wind wings.
The Elizabeth de luxe is of an entirely new and exclusive design. It also has a metal bound and metal re-enforced frame, solid side panels in rear seat and attractive side and rear lights. This kind of top ranks among the lightest of any on the Pacific coast.
A sample of the latter innovation will be shown here next week.
Buick Distributors Know Buick Machine
A repair job that isn’t well done is money partly thrown away, says Foreman Stewart of the Anaheim Auto company’s service department. This department works on nothing but Buicks, unless a car of another make is traded in, and it knows the Buick from A to Izward and back again. It can save time in diagnosing what is the trouble with the car, it can diagnose correctly and, by long practice, it can get to the seat of the time. Also, the department has the machinery, and equipment surpassed by almost no shop in town, and the parts for replacements.
On new cars the company gives a 90-day guarantee which is made good without argument or question.

STEERING GEAR OF PACKARD IS SAFE
Sometimes when it is a bright, sunshiny day in the country and a well paved road is straight level and clear of traffic even the most conservative motor car driver will "step on it."
But even the ultra-cautious driver does not think what might happen while "stepping on it" if a part of his car, perfect operation of which is vital for safety, should break, so seldom has such a thing occurred.
E. F. Roberts, vice president of manufacturing for the Packard Motors Car Co., took the methods now employed by quality car manufacturers to make a steering knuckle as an example. Because of its importance in the safety factor the steering knuckle must be practically perfect.
The knuckle is made from a billet of chrome vanadium steel, the texture and structural character of which is changed five times before the finished work is turned out, Mr. Roberts said.
The original billet has a tensile strength of 72,000 pounds to the square inch and is lacking in toughness.
REPORT AUTO CRASH
An accident was reported to police from Los Angeles-st and the alley between Center and Chesnut-st, where a Ford owned by H. E. Smith of Los Angeles came out of the alley and struck a Buick car owned by N. M. Baskovich of San Pedro, the fender on the Ford being damaged.

Dodge Coupe Is Inquiry Target Here
Inquiries continue to multiply for the Dodge business coupe, the latest of the new Dodge lins received by Charley Mann, local distributor.
From framework to window mouldings the body is built of steel. It is the first all-steel closed car ever marketed. This design anticipates every possible requirement of commercial travel. It insures unusual quietness—unusual grace—unusual stamina. It has made it possible to give the coupe that same lustrous baked-on enamel finish for which Dodge Brox' open cars have long been famous.
The upholstery is of genuine leather—leather that will wash and wear. The seat is wide and comfortable. Carrying compartments are accessible and spacious. The car is equipped with a heater, window levers, windshield cleaner, cord tires, Yale door lock, and every other appointment necessary to the owner's comfort and protection.
Built inside and out to withstand the wear and tear of everyday use, it retains the same lightness and beauty of line which you are accustomed to look for in Dodge Brong care.

TIRE SALES HERE MAKE BIG JUMP
Local tire distributors have sold more casings. If not tubes, the past week than they did in most cases the past month, according to one of the principal houses in town. Buying has been active since the first of the year, and has continued brisk on some makes which have not yet actually put into effect the advance predicted.
Various independent brands of tire distributed here have gone up during the week along with the standard makes.
As a means of competing with the independents who are keeping their prices slightly below the standard list distributors are taking on the distribution either of such nages or of the lower grades makes of the standard manufacturers sold under other trade names.
Predictions of another advance in April are being freely made still.
The recent advances, it is declared here, were to protect the dealer as well as manufacturer. The former merely pinched along under the old price schedules. He has been protected also on the advances.
FORD COSTS ONLY TWICE TYPEWRITER
"While it is true that we all judge values by comparison," says George Dunton, Ford and Lincoln dealer, "our comparisons are usually, and quite naturally, confined to articles of the same kind or class. It is interesting and enlightening sometimes to go a little further and compare the value we get for our dollar in one article with that of other articles of a different nature.
'Take the automobile, for instance. We have seen the prices go lower and lower as cars get better and better, but we don't fully appreciate the wonderful progress that has been made in this miracle-working industry until we stop to compare automobile values with values in other lines. Then the realization comes to us that we can now buy an automobile, with its hundreds of parts and the thousands of operations involved in its manufacture, for little more than twice the cost of a typewriter, or about as much as one of the larger sizes of phonographs.
'There is no question that at present prices the motor car offers more dollar for dollar value than practically any other thing or commodity in the markets.
"It is the only transportation medium that will deliver a passenger at his ultimate destination. Not everybody can live on a street car line, and railroad trains stop only at stations. The car alone takes a man right to the door.
"Living costs have been much reduced by the automobile. Suburban residence sections are multiplying in every city.
'No other explanation could account for the ten million and more motor vehicles registered in the United States today."
Penal statutes are not supposed to be a shot gun; they are supposed to be a scarecrow."
Essex Value Matchless
This is a price market. But it is also a quality market. Well-informed buyers will get both.
What car at its price offers such proofs?
In 50 hours a stock chassis went 3037 miles. Four stock cars each lowered the record between New York and San Francisco.
Ask any Essex owner about economy. Maintenance cost—fuel, oil and tires are uprisingly low. And Essex is such a delightful car to drive.
