AUTOMOBILE SECTION VOL. XXVI—NO. 116 SIGNS BEING REPLACED IN SO. CAL. Winter signposting is at its height now throut this part of the state by the signposting department of the Auto Club of So. Calif. in preparation for the arrival of thousands of visiting cars in the spring months. Five trucks of the club are now engaged in various counties of the southern part of the state, putting up new signs and renewing the signs which have been weatherworn or defaced by pot hunters, who think that a road sign is put up for a taget and no for a direction marker. Work is to start early in the year on the resigning of the island route as far north as the Fresno county line. The club signposting department will also patrol all roads in the vicinity of Pasadena during the Tournament of Roses and the football game on January 1. The Auto Club has established a national record in signposting activity, now maintaining 93,749 signs in Southern California and on transcontinental routes leading to this section of America. Included in this vast number of signs are 2000 safety warning signs and 100 electric flashing signals throughout this territory. The club has put up approximately 12000 temporary signs this year. HEAVIER PENALTIES FOR TIPSY DRIVER? Should there be a more severe penalty than at present imposed upon motorists who operate an automobile under the influence of liquor? There is a strong sentiment for a relentless warfare on such motorists, says a report just issued by official of the legal department of the Auto Club of So. Cal. Some definite consideration should be given to this question at the present time, say the club officials. The judges of the police court say that about 80 per cent of the reckless driving charges heard by them involve the operation of an automobile by a person under the influence of liquor, but that little, if any, proof of this fact is offered. And strong as it may seem, it is the consensus of opinion of those who have had experience in the working of the law regarding this question that it is too severe. Juries seem reluctant to convict offenders when the penalty is so heavy, and judges say that more people would be convicted if the penalty was less severe. California makes the operation of an automobile, while under the influence of liquor, a serious offense and provides that one convicted of such an offense may be imprisoned in the county jail for not less than six months nor more than one year, or that may be imprisoned in the state prison for not less than one or more than three years, or that he may pay a fine of not less than $500 nor more than $5000. JAMES TAKES ON The Auto Club has established a national record in signposting activity, now maintaining 93,749 signs in Southern California and on transcontinental routes leading to this section of America. Included in this vast number of signs are 2000 safety warning signs and 100 electric flash signals throughout this territory. The club has put up approximately 12000 temporary signs this year. If all the signs now maintained by the club were laid end to end they would cover a distance of 219 miles, not including the posts. The signs are now in the making for the resigning of the coast route from Los Angeles to the Monterey county line. In the southern part of Nevada and in the desert region of Death Valley, the roads have been signed by the club and wherever signs are not found, motorists may know that it is not advisable to travel. 26.7 Miles, Gallon Is Made by Essex E. W. Crawford, field materials superintendent of the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Co., is one of Anaheim's satisfied Essex drivers. His latest mileage test, made on a trip to Bakerfield, gave him 26.7 miles to the gallon. "While this seems high", says H. H. Grove, of Townsend & Medberry, Hudson and Essex distributors," it is not unusual, as Fred Weisel, rancher, of Sunset avenue, reported to me the other day that with his Essex coach he buys gasoline in 10-gallon lots and never bothers to look at his gauge until he has run 200 miles after a filling. Our latest deliveries have shown a decided preference for the Hudson and Essex closed models, Paul V. Hester of the Plain Dealer, accepting a Hudson coach on Christmas morning and George Pickering the contractor, an Essex cabriolet the day before. JAMES TAKES ON THE FEDERAL TIRE James the Vulcanizer announces that he has taken the exclusive distribution in Anaheim of the Federal cord tire. James has had his e/2 on this tire for six months' past and is satisfied that it is worthy of a place with the Ajax, Goodyear and Racine Horse Shoe, which he also carries. He will carry in 1923 all four makes of tire, besides tire accessories. Any kind of tire repairra made. Quick service. 2 NEW HUP MODELS 50 P. C. OF OUTPUT The reception accorded by the buying public to the specially equipped Hupmobile touring and roadster models announced in November has been so enthusiastic that it has already been found necessary to devote nearly 50 per cent of the Hupmobile open car output exclusively to these two models, says the Golden State Motor Co. local distributors. This announcement is made by O. C. Hutchinson, general manager of the Hupp Motor Car Corporation. Owing to the rapid sales of both models, numerous distributors, from various sections of the country have besieged the company at Detroit to increase their allotments at once. Handles are eliminated from the doors of a new French automobile, the lateehs being operated by small levers inside the car to which they are connected by wires. Dunton formerly had all of the county for all the Ford vehicles. BUICK IS THIRD IN NOVEMBER SALES Smashing all previous records, Buick distributors delivered 1202 cars registered in November. The Buick stood third to the Ford and Chevrolet. Sales thruout the country have been so large that the factory at Flint, Mich., has been unable to meet the demand, according to C. S. Howard, president of the Howard Automobile Co., who has just returned from an extended visit to the automotive section and the Atlantic seaboard. "The new 1926 line took the country by storm," says Howard. The sport models at the very outset made a most favorable impression, and when the sport touring and the attractive sedan coupe and open cars in the line of 14 models were introduced, the motoring public everywhere fell in love with them. Twelve solid trainloads of Buicks have been shipped to the distributing centers of the Howard company since Nov. 1, when sufficient freight cars were obtained to rush shipments It Pays to Advertise in the Orange County Plain Dealer. THE evolution of the automobile is still going on. Each year brings out new makes and models and all these latest things are scrutinized by an inquisitive and waiting public. Improvements and an aim at simplicity and the inexpensive seem to be the uppermost factors in the minds of the manufacturers. And so we are introduced to a new make of car occasionally that represents the last word in the automotive world. Dodge Coupe "First All Steel Closed Car" One of the snuggest, trimmed coupes seen in Anaheim in a long while is the new one of Dodge Bros., which Charley Mann, local distributor, is showing. The model has been out for quite a while, but Mann like everybody else has been held up on deliveries. Now he has samples of most of the new line. The coupe is the first all-steel closed car ever marketed. The design anticipates every possible demand of commercial travel. Quietness, grace, stamina mark this coupe. Features Baked on enamel, genuine leather upholstery, spacious and accessible compartments, especially the rear one which is big enough to contain a steamer trunk, has a separate place for tools and closes so as to keep out the wet absolutely; heat, window levers, windshield cleaner., Yale door lock, cord tires, etc. FRANKLIN ORDERS BREAK ALL RECORDS "Never before in our history have we had at this time of year so many surplus orders for cars, says H. H. Franklin, president of the H. H. Franklin Manufacturing Company. "We are overold not only on our closed models, which naturally are in greater demand in the winter months, but also on open models. During the first three weeks of last month the number of retail orders exceeded those for the entire month of October. Our dealers report a constant call for used Franklins, business from this source in November exceeding October records." A tank for a soap solution to which air is piped and kept under pressure increases the facility of a new sponge covered implement for washing automobiles. Mr. James E. Appelby, Orange county distributor for those new wonders of the road, the Durants automobiles and Star is wide awake to the facts as stated above and in his fine show room at 247 N. Los Angeles street, one may see these splendid new cars that have been so popular with the public from the beginning. Mr. Appleby has been in the automobile business for tue past fourteen years and opened the present Durant agency in Anaheim in November 1921. He operates his business for the exclusive distribution of Durant and Star cars throughout Orange county. His well-managed business has grown to large proportions and today his sales are numbered among those of the front rank. He has been associated with the Durant interests for the past seven years. The sales manager, Mr. B. E. Northland, although a young man is an old timer in Anaheim. He graduated from High School in this city in 1908 and since that time has been following the automobile business. He has many friends in this city and county and he knows something about the Durant car, too. Both the new Durant and Star cars are California products and the people of California appreciate this fact. Already the Durant is seen in large numbers on our busy highways, and Mr. Appleby states that his deliveries of Star cars for December its first month in Orange County will place it in the first four of cars delivered this month. Mr. James Appleby recognizes the future development of Anaheim and Orange county and he knows, too, that the Durant products are going to play an important part in the general advancement. He has the facilities here to meet the growth of the city and county and at the present time his shop offers an excellent and exclusive Durant service. Mr. Appleby is a most progressive and public spirited citizen and business man and he, also, will give the best of his personal service for the general betterment of Anaheim and the great and fertile county. The amendment is planned by Charles F. Curry, Rep. of California,—fittingly, considering California's record per capita car ownership, says local fans. Curry will take up the proposal with members of the Senate subcommittee on appropriations after New Year's Day, he says. The section of the bill which Curry would amend carries an appropriation of $29,300,000 for aid in road construction in the States. The amendment would provide that such aid be withheld from States which did not grant full reciprocity. NOVEMBER SALES OF FORD UP 90 P.C. According to a statement just received by George Dunton, authorized Ford and Lincoln dealer, from the Ford Motor Company, deliveries of Ford cars and trucks to retail buyers during the month of November totalled 106,327. This is a new high November sales record, which stands out in marked contrast to the November, 1921, retail delivery figures, which totalled slightly over 58,000 cars and trucks. For eight consecutive months, beginning with April 1., of this year, retail deliveries have exceeded 100,-000 Ford cars and trucks each U. S. RUBBER PRICES UP 20 P.C.? Official notice of the proposed boost in prices of United States Rubber company products was received here yesterday from the Los Angeles branch. The notice reads: "Owing to the increased cost of crude materials, all prices on royal cord casings, straight side fabric casings, grey and royal tubes, and all nobby cord truck casings will be advanced effective January 2nd, 1923." "New prices will be available on that date." "All orders received in the meantime will be subject to prices prevailing at time of shipment." Clyde Williams of Daniels & Williams, commenting on the letter, said that dealers had been given to understand that price increases would amount to 20 per cent on certain goods of the company. Fifteen per cent is declared certain for casings and tubes. Independents are expected to follow suit. This is a new high November sales record, which stands out in marked contrast to the November, 1921, retail delivery figures, which totalled slightly over 58,000 cars and trucks. For eight consecutive months, beginning with April 1, of this year, retail deliveries have exceeded 100,000 Ford cars and trucks each month; the accumulated total for the first eleven months of 1922 being approximately 1,200,000. While the company points out that it is not unusual for Ford retail sales to exceed 100,000 mark during the spring and early summer months, when the demand is at its peak the manner in which business has held up through out the balance of the year is without precedent. Credit for this remarkable showing is attributed by the Ford Motor Company to the many improvements which have lately been made on Ford cars and particularly to the new low level of Ford prices recently put into effect. These new low prices not only broaden the field of prospective Ford purchasers, but go still further in making the Ford car the best value from the standpoint of the retail buyer, that it has ever been. George Dunton is urging prospective Ford purchasers to arrange for delivery during the winter months in order that the demand next Spring will be relieved as far as possible. Farris Sells More Top, Cover Work The fabricoid covering is if possible increasing in popularity, says Earl Farris, among those who appreciate the fact that value lies in durability. These coverings look well for five years. The California top also is here to stay, and a dealers more and more are selecting this all-weather top for their re-fitted used cars. Farris this week supplied a fabricoid covering for Harold Bergar's Studebaker and a California top for a car of N. J. Warner of Orange. JAN. 2 DATE FOR RELIABLE CO.
