In this thrilling picture he adds two faces to the thousand he has previously accumulated and it is safe to say that without the guidance for the cast of characters no one would recognize him either as the hall-mand physician, Dr. Lamb, or as the hunchback victim of one of the doctor's experiments in turning man back into his simian prototype by transplanting live monkey glands into his body. The two characterizations are as opposite as day and night. The polished physician is the villian and the simian hunchback is the sympathetic character. Nor by any stretch of the imagination could either characterization be connected in any way with Chaney's roles in "The Penalty" or "Ace of Hearts," his former Goldwyn pictures. Chaney has had a long and arduous climb to reach his present commending position in the film mimetic world. He is himself authority for the statement that he was once a custard-pie comedian and that he broke into saplight through grand opera. "It's a funny thing," and Chaney's tone was almost apologetic, "but I was never happy in my work when I was playing for laughs as a comedian. And I have never had a better time in my life than while playing Dr. Lamb and the hunchback in "A Blind Bargain."
