ENGLISH BEGIN TO TAKE UP BASEBALL
MASADENA, Dec. 11.—The English people will always cherish first love for soccer and cricket as two of their leading sports, but baseball, the hand made famous by John McGraw, of the New York Giants and Miller Huggins of the Yankees, is gradually gaining a toothold throughout the British Isles, according to E. Arrand, recently from Bradford (Yorkshire County England). Mr. Arrand and Mr. L. Fletcher, late of Boston, have established residences in Pasadena.
Baseball, the American brand, although supplying the English sporting element with thrills, will never take the place of soccer and cricket as leading national pastimes but its place among English sports is now assured, Mr. Arrand asserts.
American baseball is looked upon as a nevolty game in Eagland but it is surprising how the pastime is acquiring support and gathering recruits both in fans and in players. It is his opinion that baseball in England will be played the same as cricket and soccer are played, in various sections of the United States, lritisher will take to baseball quicker than the average American will take to cricket or soccer.
"Both Mr. Arrand and myself have taken in many of the soccer, cricket and baseball games since we have been in So. Calif., and he has, to a certain extent, won me over to soccer and cricket while I have succeeded. I believe, in creating some interest in him in our great national game," Mr. Fletcher said. "We were at Brookside Park a Sunday or two ago and viewed the Anaheim and local Elks' teams play. I was particularly gratified when, during a part of the game, the umpire's decision was not accepted kindly by the Pasadena Elks and the fans in the grandstand began to 'razz' hisumps. Mr. Arrand, whose being has become permeated to a certain extent with the game, could not resist temptation and it was quite novel."

American ballads, explains Miss Nelson, are without equal both for tone and appeal and should be sung more extensively. She offers "Swanee River Moon," a waltz ballad, which is so simple that anyone who has a piano can play it and so rhythmical that any one at all can dance to it, as the perfect type of pure American song.
