SWEET POTATOES BIG CROP IN U.S. Sweet potatoes, although of tropical origin, are now grown in large quan tiles in the United States. According to figures for 1924 more than $8,000,000 bushels valued over $86,000,000 were produced in this country. Naturally the climate of the southern states is better suited to the crop than the shorter growing season of the north, but with early planting sweet potatoes are grown successfully as far north as southern Michigan. The United States department of agriculture has recently made a study of the different varieties of sweet potato new grown in the United States, and has classified them in eight group. Under these groups are at least 40 varieties having special characteristics, while the list of names by which minor varieties are known runs into the hundreds. Sweet potato vary in shape and size from slender banana shaped roots to those so large and thick as to merit the nickname of "unset-ground squash" sometimes applied to them. The texture, flavor and color of sweet potatoes ranges from dry, mealy ones of whitish color and low sugar content to juicy, pumpkin-colored kinds from which sweet syrup oozes during the baking. Sweet potatoes, prepared in one form or another, may be served sandwichly in almost any course in a menu. To take the place of white potatoes of to combine with left-over peas, the mealy varieties should be clean. For candied sweet potatoes, sweet potato chips, or bitter potatoes the smother, more juicy kinds are best. These are also more satisfactory for use in making sweet potato pudding or pie. The article sets forth in detail the progress among the nations mentioned: "Appreciation of the value of cooperation between employers and employed is not confined to Great Britain. Many other countries have not merely copied the Whitley principle in regard to their industries. They have made the formation of some form or other of works councils or committees enforceable at law. It is too early yet to judge whether this compulsory peace seeking can be entirely successful, and the disturbed state of so many of the countries concerned has been such that two or three years practice offers no criticism of the possible value of the principle in normal times. But as fas can be judged, nothing but good has come from the formation and functioning of works committees." REBATE MOTOR INSURANCE A new record in insurance history has been achieved this year by the Auto Club of So. Calif., according to a report just issued. Rebates of more than 15 per cent on insurance premiums are being paid policy-holders compared with approximately eight percent of a year ago. During the year more than $4,000,000.00 insurance was written or renewed by the club, says the report. Last year the club wrote and renewed $2,750,000.00.
