Up to the end of the middle of this year 74,000 women whose husbands fell in the war had chosen new mates. That is nearly one-third of the 236,000 war widows who have been granted pensions by the ministry of pensions. At one time the rate of remarriage was as high as 2000 a month; but lately it has fallen to less than 1000. When the widows marry again they are granted a gratuity equal to one year's pension. M.
