MABEE WINS MATCH IN STRAIGHT FALLS (By Sargum Sprout) ACTION! There was more action crowded into the 52 minutes and 37 seconds Ray Mabee and Orland Miller were on the mat last evening than we ever saw before in a like period Mabee won in straight falls but, Marlow he had to go! Miller is the fastest bit of man clinchery ever seen in action in these parts with the exception of Mabee. The fans were dizzy watching the whirling spinning pair. Miller had Roy in some desperately close places and Roy thought he had his man several times before he finally clamped on an arm key and scissors for the first fall after 31 minutes and 12 seconds. Both men used only clean and scientific methods and neither was hurt in any way. After a ten minute rest, they came back just as strong and fast as they had begun the match. The second fall came after 21 minutes and 25 second with a head scissors and arm lock. Miller could do nothing with Roy's legs but worried Roy a time or two with a head scissors and also a body scissors. However, his most effective work was with arm locks and wrest holds. Mabee used wrist locks and toe holds mostly to worry his man down. Any way, it was one of the cleanest, fastest mat contests every witnessed. For action it had the Mabee Santel match crowded off the map. It is a good thing for Mabee that he did not meet Miller six months ago. Mabee is a very much better wrestler than he was at that time. Roy has this to say of Miller: "All I got to say is that Orland Miller is some rough boy. Four more years and he will make the big boys hide out." The preliminary was a dinger, R.C. Weber proved too much for Winslow, but it was a good contest at that. The big boys appeared slow. You could see their hold FAST PRELIMS ON BIG BOXING CARD AT ARENA FRIDAY For preliminaries Friday night at the weekly boxing show of the Anaheim Athletic Club, Manager Billy Darnley has arranged as classy a lineup of talent as could possibly be secured. The feature preliminary will bring together that fast, clever little Placentia youngster, Tobby Montoya and Art Springer, the crack 116-pounder from Ross Field. Springer made a big hit here last week by the dandy fight he gave Bennie Heller, holding him to a draw after four rounds of torrid milling. Springer and Montoya are evenly matched as to weight and height. The soldier lad probably is the harder hitter but Tobby also can uncork a mean punch when the occasion necessitates. Their mixup is bound to be heartening... It is a good thing for Mabee that he did not meet Miller six months ago. Mabee is very much better wrestler than he was at that time. Roy has this to say of Miller: "All I got to say is that Orland Miller is some rough boy. Four more years and he will make the big boys hide out." The preliminary was a dinger, R. C. Weber proved too much for Winslow, but it was a good contest at that. The big boys appeared slow. You could see their holds coming but they knew a plenty and kept the fans in an uproar with their work. An arm and head lock gained the first fall in 13 minutes, 45 seconds and a toe hold the second fall in 11 minutes and 27 seconds. All in all it was a great show. The big crowd was good natured all the way. Both boys came out in fine shape and everyone is happy, even to Miller. He says a fellow has to be beaten once in a while to make him put forth his best efforts. PERIOD FURNITURE IS NOT MONOTONOUS Period furniture is period furniture and every chair, table, chest, bureau and picture frame has its own silent tale to tell of the home making and home life of a generation, but it proves a monotonous story when every article in a home reprints the same chapter of the same romance, says Albert Graham of the Graham Furniture store. But so-called period furniture as it exists in its natural habitat upon the continent of Europe is not monotonous. Neither is it monotonous in other places, when the home maker is willing to exert earnest care in the selection of home furnishings. The people of the United States are a new people. Homes have not been established for centuries where the things that comprise a home have been gathered generation by generation by peoples who have remained always in the shadow of their own portals. It is the task of the average American to equip him complete from cellar to garret. If he is fortunate, he may have a few pieces of rare old mahogany or Colonial design in furnish a keynote, but more often the range of the furniture store or the antique shop is the limit of his field of vision. It is there that he must decide whether or not his home-making instinct is best expressed in terms of Hepplewhite or William and Mary, or where, if he remembers that the beautiful homes of the ages were not built in a day he will study his home and select a judicious mixture of periods. For there are mixtures of periods that are vastly more effective than map. The feature preliminary will bring together that fast, clever, little Placentia youngster, Toby Montoya and Art Springer, the crack 116-pounder from Ross Field. Springer made a big hit here last week by the dandy fight he gave Bennie Heller, holding him to a draw after four rounds of torrid milling. Springer and Montoya are evenly matched as to weight and height. The soldier lad probably is the harder hitter but 'Tobby' also can uncork a mean punch when the occasion necessitates. Their mixup is bound to be a snappy affair. Young Terry, the hard-hitting welter from over Whittier way, is meeting a tough customer in this Kid Weber person, a boy who can take and give 'em. It ought to be a thriller. Brea is coming over in full force to see there "Hope" Bill Brady give the quietus to Max Ryan, the Santa Ana scraper. Brady is one of Doc Clancy's proteges and judging from the manner which he goes about his work in the gymnast, young Mr. Ryan is in for a lacing. Both boys are middleweights and mean bitters. Danny Hererra, a Fullerton 122-pounder, will stack up against Charley Dement, a newcomer from Atwood and who is a fast willing worker in the ring, in the first bout on the card. Harry Lee, the Huntington Beach sensation, who meets "One-Round" Andrews in the main event, is down to the hard grind of training and expects to be in rare form for the first of his life next Friday. Andrews sends down word from L. A. that he, too, is working out daily and will be in the 'plink' by the time the gong sends them on the way. Johnny McGraw and Joe Garcia who figure in the semi-windup, also are training diligently and this going to be a hard fought contest. It ought to be the star bout of the night. Garcia is an old pupil of Darnleys' while McGraw is one of Billy's new hopes. So the question will be the old master the new or the new, the old. At any rate, it is bound to be one sweet ll' oil battle. ANAHEIM SKEETERS DEFEAT SANTA ANA The Anaheim second team skeeter football eleven walloped Santa Ana's last eveng on the former's grid, 30 to 0. The local boys played a good game of football and are getting into the old fight again. Huntington Beach-And Anaheim are scheduled to meet at the Beach city Friday for the second league battle of the series. HEADQUARTERS ENCIA GROVES FNINETY ACRES IN old mahogany or Colonial design to furnish a keynote, but more often the range of the furniture store or the antique shop is the limit of his field of vision. It is there that he must decide whether or not his home-making instinct is best expressed in terms of Hepplewhite or William and Mary, or where, if he remembers that the beautiful homes of the ages were not built in a day he will study his home and select a judicious mixture of periods. For there are mixtures of periods that are vastly more effective than a stilted adherence, that smacks of the newly rich, to the skill and artistry of a single cabinet maker. When Chipendale returned from his journey to the Orient, and introduced a new and beautiful note into the construction of English furniture, it is unlikely that British housewives threw aside completely the beautifully designed furnishings which were then in place. It is much more likely that a few incongruous pieces were unceremoniously hustled into the attic to make way for a Chippendale armchair or a table, and that, a little later, a piece of Hepplewhite found its way into the harmonial hall only to be complemented by a bit of Sheraton and another designed by the Adam brothers. It was the gradual accumulation of the worthwhile things which fitted artistically into a common background. In France, the same condition prevailed. In old French homes to be the furniture of the Louis peron consorts together in artistic conflation, not at all disconcerted by the presence of an Italian influence here, and an evidence of the Spanish there, unless there be a discordance by their combination. It is a semblance of the long accumulation of pieces of furnishing which is advised generally by decorators of the present day, rather than last evening on the former's grid, 30 to 0. The local boys played a good game of football and are getting into the old fight again. Huntington Beach and Anaheim are scheduled to meet at the Beach city Friday for the second league battle of the series. Huntington Beach has a better team than last year and a real scrap is bargained for. The lightweight teams of Huntington Beach and Anaheim will battle for honors tomorrow afternoon on the local grid. The boys are in excellent shape to play straight football. They are a little weak on forward passes but with another game that will be overcome. The Skeeters have had two practices this week with one victory to their credit and hope for the one tomorrow. The field is in first class shape and a battle royal will be staged. HARTRANFT TAKES REGULAR POSITION Glen Hartranft, Fullerton lad has taken a position on the Stanford football team, that of left end. Coach Andy Kerr has been hard hit again, this time thru the injuries of Job Jannsen, who fell and dislocated his angle. Jim Lawson another piece of machinery is laid up with injuries sustained several games ago. "Tiny" Hartranft has played end man in several games and will probably be put on next Saturday. PORTABLE DISC GRINDER briefly for use in industrial schools, but available also for factories, a portable disc grinder has been invented that can be operated by connection with an electric light socket. a strict adherance to period. With that end in view, houses are studied closely and their possibilities carefully considered.
