SERIES LOOKS LIKE 50-50 SAYS SARGUM (By Sargum Sprout) The guy that gets the dope sheet before him and starts to figuring the coming world's series finds himself up against a real job. It looks like a 50-50 proposition where the breaks will make the winner. The Giants have out hit the Yanks 15 points and have stolen 44 more bases which would appear a big edge for the Giants but the Yanks off set this advantage by a stronger pitching staff. Snyder will do the bulk of the catching for the McGraw tribe. He bats 338 and is a whale of a performer. Wally Shang the Yankee see lams the horse hide to the tune of 326 and is just as good in the other departments of the game as Snyder. The Giants hurlers, J. Barnes Ryan, Nehf and McQuillian do not stand up to, Bush Shawkey, Hoyt, Jones and Mays. Out at first base for the Giants we find Kelly, who was somewhat of a filver in the last world’s series. He has batted 329 this season while Pipps of the Yanks is just one point below. While Pipp does not hit so hard as Kelly, he is a valuable man at the plate in a pinch. Pipp has an edge in the fielding. At second base Johnny Rawlings is a great little performer for the Giants He and Ward, the Yanks second sacker, both started in the last world’s series. Rawlings is counted a little better fielder than the Yank star. Rawlings batting average is 285 against 270 for Ward. At short McGraw has Bancroft, one of the greatest short fielders in the game. He bats 324. Scott for the Yanks is a great fielder and while he bats only 272 he has a habit of busting loose in world series and getting hits when they mean runs. At third the Giants have the great Groh with a batting average of 272. Groh has not played the ball for the Giants he did for the Reds so this world’s series may see him tear loose and play a whale of a game. Anyway he should hit over 272 but you never can tell. Dugan is a recent comer to the Yanks from Boston. He bats 267 and is a whale of a baseballer. In the outfield we find Cunningham. LOCALS LOSE 7 TO 1 TO FAST SHELL OIL CO. SUNDAY P. M. Anaheim Elks couldn't hit the ball after a two weeks' vacation, and took a 7 to 1 trimming from the fast Shell Oil Co. nine at Signal Hill yesterday afternoon. Ford Tally held the locals to three hits while Hughes, after a three weeks' layoff, permitte! the oilmen to rap out 13 safe ones. The locals started off unapreciously, scoring their lone tally in the first round when Bush, leadoff man, in the absence of Jack Pendleton with auto wreck injuries, was safe on a wild throw. A double by Ramage, and sacrifice by Dunn put him around. But it proved a flash in the pan. Hughes and Buster Callan got the other two hits for the locals. The oilmen seemed very fast on their dusty diamond, fielding sharp and fast. Anaheim— AB. H. O. A. E. Los Angeles- Yanks is a great fielder and while he bats only 272 he has a habit of busting loose in world series and getting hits when they mean runs. At third the Giants have the great Groh with a batting average of 272. Groh has not played the ball for the Giants he did for the Reds so this world's series may see him tear loose and play a whale of a game. Anyway he should hit over 272 but you never can tell. Dugan is a recent comer to the Yanks from Boston. He bats 287 and is a whale of a baseballer. In the outfield we find Cunningham, 337; Mensel, 331; Young, 381 and Robertson, 289 for the Giants and Meusel, 323; Ruth, 319 and Whit 305 for the Yanks. But gosh, what's the use to figure, some nut that's newer hit hand enough to break an eggshell may be the batting hero. One thing that is pretty sure Babe Ruth will be a more dangerous man for the McGraw men to handle this season. The Babe has lost a woe bit of his swell head which was handicapping him last year and he is in good physical trim. The Giants will miss big Phil Doug like Old Phil was there a million last year. They all looked alike to him, the great Ruth and Boby Meusel and all the rest. The Yanks are favorite to take the series in New York. Take your choice if you are lucky you'll win. Both teams are more or less made up of individual stars, and they are hard to figure. I would rather try to figure Roy Mabee's batting average with that of Orlando Miller. Our Mary Browne almost toppled the great Molla Mailory off her Circeus as queen of American tennis players last Saturday. Marry made Molla suffer defeat in the second set and ran the third set to duce games but Molla was a little the stronger and won out 7 to 5. The score of sets were 6-1 2-6 and 7-5. LOCAL BOXERS AT CORONA TONIGHT Local boxers show their wares at Corona tonite. Charley Newcombe, Anaheim man who is now a resident of Corona, has turned "fight impresario" over in the foothill city and has lined up an attractive card for his first show with the assistance of Billy Darnley, local club manager. Darley is taking over with him Johnny Nandes, who will meet Pete Pina 122 pounds and Young Kid McCoy will mix with Kid Scotty at 100 pounds while Harry Bowen meets Putting Scotty in the main event at 145 pounds. There will be also a wrestling match between Young Roy Mabee and Malmout Corona at 200 pounds. A good turnout is expected for Impressario Newcombe has been besieged by their start on innings, scoring their lone tally in the first round when Bush, leadoff man, in the absence of Jack Pendleton with auto wreck injuries, was safe on a wild throw. A double by Ramage, and sacrifice by Dunn put him around. But it proved a flash in the pan. Hughes and Buster Callan got the other two hits for the locals. The oilmen seemed very fast on their dusty diamond-, fielding sharp and fast. Anaheim—AB. H. O. A. E. R Bush, lf...3 0 0 0 Ramage, lb...4 1 6 1 Dunn, 3b...4 0 1 2 G. Callan, cf...4 0 1 0 B. S. SPORTS Bellevue and Morlowe Jamss, tennis managers in the Anaheim high school, called a meeting today of students interested in the game. There is much good new material in the school this year and with the old winning team should be expected. A tournament will be played off before the league games start. Coach Elliott has two league games this week, the 150th team will play at Tustin Thursday. The first team date has been changed from Saturday to Friday on the local diamond. The first class team basket ball games will be played tomorrow between juniors and seniors. Both are speedy teams, so sophmore game will be played next week.
