PLAN WILD CAT AT WILMINGTON SOON With Oil Operators Wilmington is to have a wild cat well drilling on the Dominguez Hills in a few weeks. The Oakridge Oil Co., an extensive Ventura-co Developing Co. believes there is oil at Wilmington and is backing its belief with a well. The Federal Drilling Co. has taken the contract to drill the well. The Federal Drilling Co. has made an enviable record in wild cat work and if oil is to be found at Wilmington the Oakridge-Federal Drilling Co. combination should find it. The Bixby Hills section of the south is still struggling to get on the petroleum map, but as yet has not succeeded. The National Security Oil Co. a subsidiary of the Beatty Oil and Development Co. has a hole down 4265 feet. Showings at times are a little encouraging, but so far there seems to be little chance of getting production short of 4500 feet if at all. The chances for Buena Park becoming an oil field seem to be growing slimmer daily. The Standard Oil Co., on the Mitchell well has reached a depth of 4700 feet, a depth for a wildcat well that would almost make it look like a "duster". However the Standard is no quitter when it comes to wild cat wells and the drilling will continue until something definite is secured. Developments at Eagle Rock attract interest in spite of the fact that the Beatty Oil Co. has been working on a well for over two years. The drilling is now at 3445 and the showings cannot be said to be enouraging. "Jim" O'Donnell succeeded in putting the Western Pacific back on production a 125 barrel well. O'Donnell took the property over a month ago. At that time the well was making 35 barrels mostly water and did not look very good for the east extension of the famous Montebello field. It is understood that the new owner intends to deepen the well and search for lower sands. Redondo is scheduled for an increase of production with the bringing of oil operators. PRECOCIOUS CHILD IS HAPPY "TOMBOY" SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 26.—Betty Ford, 10-year-old wonder child of San Francisco, Calif., has never attended school, but she has read 1,400 books. She has gathered not a little knowledge of history, astronomy, and biology and has written several hundred poems. This knowledge she secured in special training she received at home under her mother's direction. Betty's memory dates back to the time of feeding by bottle at the age of 12 months. At 18 months she spoke words clearly and knew the alphabet. At 20 months she could put picture puzzles together. When 22 months she could name 12 birds in a picture. At 30 months she began inventing stories and at 32 months she had composed jingles and rhymes. Still, Betty is not a weak, amenable child. She's healthy, well developed, fond of play and is considered a "tom boy" by her playmates. WOMAN ENTERS NEW FOREIGN SERVICE NEW YORK, Sept. 29.—The state department has recently announced the first woman member of its foreign service in other than a clerical capacity. Miss Maud Miles of Erie, Pa., is entering the American embassy in Tokio as commercial attache. Miss Miles, who has been in the state department for some time, acted in a confidential advisory capacity for the Japanese delegation to the arms conference. Besides having a thorough knowledge of Japanese, French, Spanish and German, she is a student of oriental trade conditions. It is understood that the new owner intends to deepen the well and search for lower sands. Redondo is scheduled for an increase of production with the bringing in of two wells by the Chansier-Danfield Midway. Torrance No. 1 plugged off bottom water and will try out for a test at 3842. Redondo No. 2 the second well will go or production at 3186. The Standard Oil Co., succeeded in getting its Torrance Community No. 1 back on production after side-tracking some pipe and cleaning out. The well is doing about 350 barrels of 17 gravity oil. The General Petroleum's Carson No. 1 increased its output from 70 barrels to 110 barrels. The increase is a pleasant surprise. The production is unning 17 gravity. Development work at Placentiaook on a little new interest with the announcement that the Brady Well Syndicate had taken over the Placentia Oil Co. and would complete its well at an early date. The Placentia Oil Co. got into Richfield in the boom days and got a hole down 3275 feet. Seal Beach continues dormant. The Dabney Oil Syndicate re-cemented at 3037 a string of 8¼, the well will stand for ten days. The Seal Beach Oil Company is awaiting the arrival of a string of 4-inch drill pipe and will not resume drilling for several days. The Seal Beach Oil Co.'s No. 1 stands cemented, the 10-inch at 3200 feet. RIVER PEOPLE HAVE FLOATING GARDENS Canton, China, has 250,000 inhabitants living on boats and rafts moored in the river and finding occupation in the vast inland navigation of the empire or in port commerce. Some of the boats accommodate large families, together with modest poultry farms, crowded together under their low bamboo sheds. Others are handsome wooden residences ornamented with plants, and yet others are pleasure resorts with their professional dancing girls. In the lakes and swamp-bordered rivers of southern Shantung the natives live in boats; few live on land.. To vary their monotonous diet they construct rafts of bamboo covered with earth on which they plant onions and garlic, and which they tow behind their boats. They also raise hundreds of ducks which are trained to go into the water to feed and return at a signal. People can get accustomed to anything, and the next generation, inheriting conditions like these, will think them normal. Tomorrow---The last day of the month Remnant Day! Day! ISLANDS LEGALLY IN PAWN TO SCOTCH DETROIT, Sept. 29.—The islands of Orkney and Shetland are legally "in pawn." They were pledged to Scotland by the king of Denmark on the occasion of the marriage of the Danish Princess, Margaret, to James III of Scotland, in 1471. These islands groups were then Norwegian territories and had been so since the PLAN LIGHT HOUSES FOR NIGHT FLIERS Demonstrations with an apparatus consisting of a large size searchlight and a huge inclined mirror, which have just been completed by the searchlight engineers of the General Electric Company at Schnectady, N.Y., are believed to be the fore runners of land lighthouses for the use of aeroplanes at night. The equipment used in the tests comprised a 35-inch, high intensity searchlight having a capacity of 325,000,000 beam candlpower, and a mirror sufficiently large to reflect this powerful beam. The searchlight was enclosed in a housing structure and remained stationary. The beam played through a window in the house upon the mirror and was reflected straight up into the sky to a great height. The mirror was inclined at an angle of 45 degrees, and was movable, allowing the light beam to be rotated in the air. The proposal is to identify the town or station by rotating the light in a certain manner. Thus a string of these land lighthouses could be set up 25 miles apart, between two points, like New York and Washington, and to the aeroplane pilot familiar with their signals they would constitute a perfect guiding path through the night, as well as identify desired landing places. By enclosing the searchlight, this delicate apparatus would be protected at all times from the weather. In the General Electric tests, the light beam was observed at points ISLANDS LEGALLY IN PAWN TO SCOTCH DETROIT, Sept. 29.—The islands of Orkney and Shetland are legally "in pawn." They were pledged to Scotland by the king of Denmark on the occasion of the marriage of the Danish Princess, Margaret, to James III of Soctland, in 1471. These islands groups were then Norwegian territory, and had been so since the close of the Ninth century. At the time of their being pawned the king of Denmark was also sovereign of Norway and Sweden and hoped that the marriage of the Danish princess would help to effect an alliance with Soctland—then a separate kingdom from England. To help matters on the Danish king agreed to fix the princess' dowry at 60,000 florins (about $120,000)—10,000 florins to be paid before the lady left Denmark, and the islands of Orkney to be given in pledge for the remainder. But at the last moment the king could only lay his hands on 2000 of the 10,000 florins, and was obliged to pledge the Shetland islands for the balance. The pledge has never been redeemed, and though Denmark has made several attempts to get back these islands all the negotiations have come to naught.
