CHALLENGERS SEEK MATCH WITH MABEE CHALLENGES continue to pour in to Roy Mabee, Anabeim's crack wrestling racher, the flood taking on new life since the home boy last Tuesday evening gave Ad Santel, world's light heavyweight champion, the surprise of his life by holding him for an hour. A telegram to The Plain Dealer sporting editor, from H. Stroh, of Taft, who has cleaned up things rather thorously in the Bakersfield oil district, says: "I would like to wrestle Mabee." Stroh is much heavier than Mabee, weighing about 195 pounds. A letter to The Plain Dealer sporting editor, typed on stationery of the Union League club of Los Angeles, says: "I wish to challenge Roy Mabee, light-heavyweight wrestler of your city, for a finish match. "If you will run a challenge in your paper for me, it will be greatly appreciated. Yours in sport, OR-LANDO B. MILLER. Miller, who recently arrived on the coast after making it uninteresting for other wrestlers in Nebraska, was introduced to local fans last Tuesday evening, when he issued a verbal challenge to the winner of the match. He also outweighed Mabee, tipping the scales at 182. Mabee is beginning to feel like his old self again, following the grueling workout with Santel. He was able to don a pair of boots today and start irrigating his 20-acre valencia grove west of the city. It is known he intends to take on some other husky as soon as he gets his cover crop in and can get down to training again. Carpentier’s Vanquisher Seeks Bout with Dempsey NEW YORK, Sept. 25.—American boxing promoters were busy today on the cables seeking services of Battling Sikl, six-round conqueror of Carpentier and the present sensation of the ring. Dave Driscoll, matchmaker of the Eb-bets-McKeever club in Brooklyn, cabled the Sehegales an offer of $100,000 to come over and meet Harry Wills on Columbus day. PARIS, Sept. 25.—Battling Sikl, the Senegalese fighter who last night knocked out George Carpentier in the sixth round of a scheduled 20-beginning of the third round when it appeared that Georges did not have a chance to win, sentiment began to turn and before the finish the fans were cheering wildly for the Senegalese. City Briefs Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Amack passed yesterday in Los Angeles with relatives and friends. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Coykendall and can boxing promoters were busy today on the cables seeking services of Battling Sikl, six-round conqueror of Carjenitier and the present sensation of the ring. Dave Driscoll, matchmaker of the Eb-bets-McKeever club in Brooklyn, cabled the Sehegales an offer of $100,000 to come over and meet Harry Wills on Columbus day. PARIS, Sept. 25.—Battling Sikl, the Senegalese fighter who last night knocked out George Carpenier in the sixth round of a scheduled 20-round battle, today issued a challenge to Jack Dempsey for a battle for the world's heavyweight championship. While the new heavyweight champion of France was instructing his manager to cable a challenge to Dempsey or any other American heavyweight Carpenier, the fallen idol of France, was under the care of physicians, who were attempting to ease his pain. Carpentier was suffering from a broken nose, a badly cut mouth, a long gash in his cheek, two fractures of his right hand and a broken bone in his left hand. Both eyes were tightly closed and he suffered from the effects of a severe body beating. While Carpenier was in seclusion the colored fighter was parading the boulevards. He did not bear a mark of the struggle he had been through and was in high spirits. Wherever he went he was followed by crowds who cheered him in spite of the fact that he had crushed the most popular pugilist France ever produced. Sikl's extreme toughness and game-enabled him to win the contest. That he was hit as hard as Carpenier can hit and still came back and win was the surprise of the contest. The great right hand of Carpenier, the hand that sent Jack Dempsey reeling across the ring at Jersey City more than a year ago could do no more than send the negro to his knees for the count of "seven." The terrific punch that the colored fighter withstood crushed Carpenier's best weapon and removed much of his effectiveness. For the first time Carpenier has been beaten by a man of his own weight. Both men weighed but little over 170 pounds but the negro was in the finest possible condition while Carpenier appeared a bit drawn. That Carpenier's defeat was a great shock to Paris is evidenced by the fact that he was anything from 5 to 10 to 1 favorite over the colored boxer. So sure was Paris that Carpenier would win that but little money changed hands as the result. When the contest started, Carpenier was the fans' idol but at the BRITIAN STANDS PAT ON STRAITS CONTROL LONDON, Sept. 25.—England has not yielded a single inch in the matter of the Dardanelles and will not do so. The Turks will have to fight to gain control of the straits leading to the Black sea and the British will not permit Constantinople to peril their hold on this important waterway. RUSSIAN DEMANDS END JAP CONFAB TOKIO, Sept. 25.—The Chang Chun conference between Soviet Russia and Japan broke up today, according to announcement made here. The conference, which first gave promise of having far reaching effects and as a step towards recognition of Russia by Japan and probably by China, never reached the stage of serious business. RECOVERS FROM INJURY Thomas Grussing is able to be at his work again after suffering an injury which occurred several weeks ago. While driving his tractor between a telephone pole and an orange tree, the guard handle flew loose, and struck Mr. Grussing on the lip, cutting it severely, knocking him unconscious. Several teeth were also knocked out by the blow. He lay in a stupor for several hours and the injury was very painful.
