RUSH TO FIX HEADLIGHTS IS ON
Certificate Not Demanded,
Announces Sec. Davis of Auto Trade Ass'n
The chaotic state of the automobile lens situation has been illustrated clearly during past week or more in the course of headlight adjustments made by A. Bevillard's shop. According to R. W. Cummings, foreman, 105 different makes of lens have received ratings, according to conformity with the adjustment law of the state, and some of these ratings show that the light afforded amounts in many cases to only a few candelpower.
The Bevillard shop has been busy from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 or 11:00 p.m., daily, adjusting lights for motorists. This shop, like that of West Bros., has been declared an official adjusting station by the Orange-co Auto Trade Ass'n. Geo. Ennis also has had a tremendous rush of patronage.

STATE LEADS ALL COUNTRIES IN CARS
Pessimists and knockers and members of the Ancient Order of Gloom got a jolt when the 1922 automobile registration figures for United States came out, according to James The Vulcanizer, like George Dunton and Nenno & Bock Goodycar dealer at Anaheim.
"Despite generally adverse business conditions and the fact of the thousands of cars that went out of service, the people of this country own 1,428,773 more automobiles and trucks now than they did a year ago, an increase of 15 per cent."
"It means just two things—one that this country is a long way from being broke, and two that automobiles are not regarded by the people of this country as a luxury to be bought out in flush times.
"As a matter of fact, Americans bought within the past twelve months as many cars as the rest of the world owns altogether. Statisticians figure that there are about 12,800,000 cars running in the world, all of which buy about 2,000,000 are owned in this country."
James has collected some interesting figures in regard to automobiles owned. For example, Great Britain has about 497,000 cars, Canada 463,000, France 236,000, Germany 91,000 and the next one down the list is Argentine with 75,000.

TO USE FOUR MILLION MAPS
Demand-in State This Year by Motorists Breaks All Records
More than 4,000,000 road maps will be used by motorists in Southern California this year!
According to figures issued yesterday by the Automobile Club of State of California is the most mapped territory in the world.
In 1918 there were only 350,903 road maps used annually by autoists here and there. The next year this number jumped to more than 2,000,000 when the eyes of the entire United States centered on Southern California as the world's greatest touring and motoring center.
Last year local auto owners and eastern visitors secured 3,814,640 maps showing Southern California and transcontinental routes from the Auto club touring bureau. This year the number will be increased by half a million, say club officials.
If all the strip maps issued by the Auto club this year were laid end to end, they would reach from San Francisco to San Diego and on over to the Imperial Valley. Each map is 10 1-2 inches long and there are at least 4,000,000 of them. Figure it out for yourself.
Extreme accuracy is the watchword of the preparation of these maps, and constant road changes means constant map changes.

Hilley, Studebaker distributors, while considerably better off, also has been forced to keep patrons waiting. Tarton & Lumadon, Maxwell and Chalmers distributors, have been in the same situation, especially on Maxwells. Charley Mann, has been able to get several Dodges, but not a complete line.
But, as one fan remarked, what a few weeks amount to if you buy a car you expect to keep for two or three years?
STUDEBAKER SALES
Harry D. Riley reports the sale of new Studebaker light six roadster by Virgil Simpson of Anaheim. Earl Kennan of LaHabra also has purchased a car of the Anaheim, Orange and Fullerton distributor of the Studebaker.

Among the purchasers of cars this week was Harold O'Donnell, who bought the handsome Jordan Blueboy, the latest of the Jordan models. Other sales are in near prospect and inquiries about the Jordan, as well as the Cleveland and Chandler, which the firm also distribute, have been many.

TWENTY-SEVENTH YEAR
Gov’t Mail Carriers Must Obey Speed Law
The Motor Vehicle Department continues on the trail of unfit drivers. During August, according to compilations just announced by Director Charles J. Chenu, 28 drivers lost their licenses by revocation or suspension, eight by being revoked for a year and 20 suspended for from 30 to 90 days.
The department announces that auto or motorcycle speed events under the disguise of government mail permits will not be permitted on California highways. The mysterious arrest of Wells Bennett near Irvine announced in the Plain Dealer, is explained in this connection. Superintendent Chenu declaring that Bennett’s alleged permit to carry letters from certain Canadian to certain American officials did not give him warrant to break the speed laws.

GRAVELLING, GRADING ROADS
Much New Work in and Near Anaheim Started by County Engineer
Anaheim and vicinity again are receiving their share of new road improvements made or projected by the force of County Engineer J. L. McBride. Roads in various other parts of the country also are being put into shape. Grading, gravelling and oiling compose most of the work done.
Magnolia street from Lincoln boulevard south for half a mile is being graded and oiled.
East street from the city limits to Broad street is being graded and beginning Monday, will be oiled.
Placentia avenue from the Orange-thorpe road south for half a mile will be graded and graveled.
Orange avenue, south of Broadway, from Euclid avenue west for half a mile is being graded and graveled. The road was graveled two years ago and less work is necessary.
AIR CLEANER NEW FRANKLIN DEVICE
Automotive engineers have long sought a means of taking air into the carburetor of a gas engine without allowing dust and other foreign material to be drawn in at the same time. It has long been realized that dust drawn into an engine in this manner had a tendency to form an abrasive substance causing excessive wear on the mechanism when circulated with the oil.
A device introduced by the Franklin Automobile Company with its new series 10 motor, which was recently announced, is said to practically solve this problem.
The new device, which is known as the air-cleaner or dust separator is set close beside the carburetor on the air-intake pipe. It operates on the principle of centrifugal motion, much after the manner of a cream separator. When the engine is started, the one rotating part of the "separator" sets up a whirling action which separates all dirt particles and other foreign material from the air which is drawn into it. These dirt particles are thrown out into a separate passage and carried away.
The air-cleaning device is incorporated on the new Franklin, is automatic in action, self cleaning, and requires absolutely no attention. It operates so efficiently that it will throw dirt, stone, gravel, and even grasshoppers, when they are fed into it.
derful frame accounts for the ability of the Reo to stand up under the hardest kind of road conditions.
But see the car at Dale & Co.'s local branch. A few glances tell the story.

Orange avenue, south of Broadway, from Euclid avenue west for half a mile is being graded and graveled.
The road was graveled two years ago and less work is necessary. The rest of the avenue all the way to Stanton will be oiled.
The County Engineer's office announces that the long section of the San Diego state highway will be finished October 1st and the new detour of a mile and one-half or more from Main street, Tustin, over Bryan street to the Myford road abolished.
While work of paving continues on and about the South Glassell street bridge, Orange, the bridge and road are open for traffic and have been for about a week:
The raising of the bridge over the Talbert road is slow work, only 10 inches per day per span being possible. There are five spans, each has to be elevated five feet and afterward each has to be cut thru.
In La Habra the county engineer is oiling Macy and Russell streets, Cypress street is being graded and oiled also.
It is announced that the Los Angeles county engineer will begin work Oct. 1, on Central avenue, Lr Habra. The road will be rock balasted and oiled.
This new Turk offensive is very offensive to the Allies.
