BOUTS LAST NIGHT
ROUGH AND FURIOUS
By Sargum Spout)
LAST night's entertainment at the Athletic Club arena was rough and furious in spots. There were two knockouts and two terrific draws. The only tame bout was the curtain raiser. Charlie Newcombs fistic hope, Pete Pina is a frost when it comes to slinging mites. He will not step into an opponent and will not fight back when attacked. Mose Mootch tried to lead him out but failed. Pete turned loose one or two blows, one of which gave Mose a shimmer above the right eye. It was Mose's fight all the way.
Charlie Newcomb displayed another corona boy in the second bout in the person of Harry Bowan. Bowan has more fight stored in the linger of his left hand than Pete Pina has in his whole body. Bowan showed well for his first ring battle. He had Bud Baker groggy but left the door to his chin wide open and Bud was able to weather the storm of blows long enough to put the Corona lad away, but it took three bnock downs to do it. The fight lasted less than two minutes. Lookout for this Bowan when he gains a little experience. He has the stuff.
Good Art Espanisa was out-classed by Joe Kelly in height and reach by about six inches. With this handicap Art won the first round with heavy, clean work and was leading the second round by a good margin when Joe caught him on the chin with a left hook. It was a clean knockout. Kelly had been on the verge of dreamland a couple of times and the end came very unexpectedly. Kelly is a good boy.
Paddy Dillon was indisposed and Jimmy Musso did not show up so Jack Burman and Kid Layman put the semi windup. The Kid had Jack groggy in the first round with heavy punches, but Jack came back in the second and third and fought as he never has before in Anaheim. The fourth went to the Kid after a terrific bombardment on both sides. It was a whirl of a draw.
The main event between Mike O'Leary and Scotty Deist was a torrid affair from bell to bell. These but the judges saw fit to call it a draw. Mike sure put on a fight last night and why the mob kept calling for his blood is beyond us. He was hit low in the third but refused to allow his seconds to claim a foul. He is game and always gives the fan a run for their money. Diest is game and a good performer.
A guy that occupied a ring side seat opposite big Bud McAlvey had Bud on the verge of a knockout several times. This fan repeated the show blow for blow, knocks outs and all. The earnestness and agony he put into his expression just abolished Big Bud and a few others. Bud laughed till he could laugh no longer and settled down to school girl gigging.
If Darnley wants to keep his time-keeper he will have to seat a certain far back where Bud will not be able to watch his pantomine performances.
Sargum Sprout is considerable cross-eyed this morning from trying to watch the boxers, the acting fan and Big Bud.
