MONDAY, Sept. 18, 1922 ANAHEIM ELKS BEAT FAST COX-HAAS 4-2 WITH the hot weather limbering up soup-bones to the maximum of efficiency, so that the game was wound up in the remarkably short time of one hour and ten minutes, Anaheim Elks took their oldtime rival, the fast Cox-Haas team of Pasadena into camp on the local high school field yesterday afternoon to the count of four to two. Herb Salveson was on the mound for the locals and pitched winning ball thruout, keeping seven safe hits carefully scattered. There were some changes in the local lineup. Harry Hughes took a well-earned vacation from recent extraordinary service in the box. Glenn Callan was missing from centerfield, Perry Callahan taking his place. Coffman was at third in place of Eddie Dunn, in the hospital suffering from a severe attack of sunstroke Saturday. Coffman played a mighty good game, fielding one putout and one assist faultlessly and hanging up two of the locals' four scores on three bingles, one of them a home run, in four times up. Rainage made one of the other markers for the locals on a single, sacrifice and error. Salveson walked, was sacrificed to second by Ray Bush and scored on Pendleton's two-bagger for the other of the quartet of tallies. Secretary Webber, of the Los Angeles Pacific Coast league team, who signed up Doty Bush a week ago, was in the grandstand. It was a rather listless game, due to the heat, for local talent to show up to the best advantage before a league scout. Schrott, left-fielder who was supposed to attract Webber's optics, got one hit in four times up. Ray Bush, another attraction, hit once in two times at bat and fielded three flies out of the sun. Doty Bush didn't celebrate with anything at all in the way of safe hits in three times up. There will be no game next Sunday, the locals being given the first Sunday off in several months. The following Sunday Manager Knott is attempting to bring the Shell Oil Co., or the Hernosa Missions. The latter club as the Redondo Edisona has won $6 games straight in the Edison PLACENCIA PLACENTIA, Sept. 19.(Spl.)—The Ladies Social Circle held the opening meeting after the summer vacation at the home of Mrs. James Huntley on Friday afternoon. A goodly number were present to enjoy the social hour and short business meeting. In the absence of the president, Mrs. C. R. Farrar, Mrs. Wm. Vogle presided. Delicious refreshments consisting of fruit salad, cake and ice tea were served by the hostess assisted by Mrs. Daugherty. At the hearing of the matter of the incorporation of Placentia before the board of supervisors Tuesday the boundaries were cut down, some temporarily and another hearing for those in favor of the matter will be held next Tuesday. It was not expected by those that had the matter in hand that the board would give the entire territory called for in the petition and therefore the cut was not unexpected. After the hearing next Tuesday, Sept. 19, the board will probably call for a vote. NEW TAXI day or night ardr Lee, 123 W FOR SALE—2 H. engine. Cheap. J. 755-R-4.
