THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER An Independent Newspaper, Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday R. W. ERNEST, Manager PAUL V. HESTER, Editor BLENDED INTERESTS The world, in many ways is broader than it ever was. But in other ways it is narrower than it was. It is narrower as to transportation and communication. It is narrower as to spheres of independent action by nations. It does not require a big segment of a person's life-time to travel around the world, as it once did. And by cable or by wireless one may speak to the most distant corners of the globe in a few hours. There is a narrowing of economic independence of nations, to. Strictly speaking, no civilized nations is or can be absolutely independent, economically. Nations may be independent politically, of other nations, as the United States is. But trade intercourse among nations, and stability of finances, are vital to the economic weal of any and all countries. Europe finds that it cannot go on successfully toward economic restoration without the active and of the United States. And the United States cannot fully attain unto economic normality without sharing in the benefits of economic rehabilitation on the other side of the Atlantic. Hence the world is so narrow in these things that Europe needs America and America needs Europe, and neither can be independent of the other, economically, and cannot even try to be independent of each other, as to trade and finances, without inviting disaster. AIRSHIP TRIPS TO POLE Captain Amundsen's belief that the airship is to be the means of transportation in future explorations around the North Pole and South Pole is shared by Maj. R. Carr, air scout of the Quest, the ship on which Sir Ernest Shackleton died on his voyage toward the South Pole. Major Carr is an aeronautic expert and has studied deeply the problem of penetrating the polar wastes by the air. He not only believes that exploring by airship can and will be done, but he predicts that pleasure craft will DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS As in the olden time angels often came down to men and presented themselves as guests, in order to prepare and strengthen them for Heaven, so do we feel that, in this natural order of things, we are to be to one another angels of God, and for this end the strength of the Spirit is bestowed upon us. -Schleiermacher If marriage doesn't refine both his appearance and actions, you may take it for granted that he is boss in his house. The most vindictive man in the world is the one who hopes the growing masculinity of women will eventually grow whiskers on 'em. As parent, teach your children aright and set a good example before them. This is one of your chief responsibilities as a parent. Luther Burbank, despite his years and his absorbing activities with plants, retains the romping spirit of boyhood. He has not forgotten how to play. The training of the child proceeds much better if the parent and the teacher enter sympathetically and understangibly into the child's viewpoint. When Captain Amundsen sets out to make an airship flight across the North Pole, he will not take along a stock of palmleaf fans as part of his necessary equipment. No matter how lofty one's political creed, if one does not vote it avails little. It is the honest ballot, intelligently cast, that ocunts for good government. Be not too stern with little John Hawkins. He not only believes that exploring by airship can and will be done, but he predicts that pleasure craft will make trips into the high hyperborean latitudes, to carry the adventurous. Pleasure trips by air to both Poles may be quite the vogue a few years hence. Who shall say? It is an age of marvels. Today's wonder gives way to the more wonderful development of the morrow. Walter Wellman attempted a balloon flight to the North Pole. That was destined to failure. But it may become the forerunning undertaking in a long series of evolutionary developments which may culminate in making polar trips by air commonplace occurrences. Real wisdom begins when you learn to distinguish between flattery and commendation. Senator La Follette's vote stopped a little short of unanimous in Wisconsin. No matter how lofty one's political creed, if one does not vote it avails little. It is the honest ballot, intelligently cast, that counts for good government. Be not too stern with little John Henry, father; remember the days when you yourself were not so good a boy as you might have been and should have been. The national government is very right in providing rigidly against profiteering in coal. To permit the extortions of godless greed would be a national outrage. If there were more intelligence in the jury-box, in criminal cases, there would be fewer mistrials. Instead of putting premium on ignorance on juries, premium should be put on intelligence. Better and brighter conditions are evolving, as to the general economic situation. From the blackness of desperation, a few weeks ago, there has developed a more promising outlook in all directions. Some women would COMMENTS OF THE PRESS WHAT EDITORS ARE SAYING BETTERING MOTION PICTURES—New York Evening Post "I believe that the women of America should assist in every way possible to establish a system for the distribution of motion pictures, whereby each picture may stand on its own merit and under which good pictures will be encouraged and poor pictures discouraged." This was the theme of a speech made by W. W. Hodkinson at the biennial convention of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, held at Chautauqua N.Y. It is a tople that merits attention, for even the unobservant must be aware of the astounding growth in the popularity of this form of entertainment. Unfortunately, with few exceptions, the popularity is undeserved. It is the factory system of production that Mr. Hodkinson deplores. A certain group of producers has got hold of theaters thrust out the country, and because of this control the public is forced to see their photoplays. The expense of such an organization is tremendous. What is the result? Photoplays must be turned out hastily and indiscriminately. Hence a mass of inartistic films. Besides the expense of the distributing end of the organization, there is the upkeep of the stars. This point receives only casual mention from Mr. Hodkinson, but it is one of the biggest factors in retarding improvement in the PARAGRAPHS By Robert Quillen Home: A place where some women works fourteen hours a day. Some men have jealous wives, and some never flirt with other women. When a man goes out for a whale of a time, he usually gets into hot water. Seven parts of virtue consists in Luckily for the public, some persons are demanding something better. It is the independent producer, in most cases, who is supplying it. Independent producers, however, do not find it easy to "break through" to the public, because, as Mr. Hodkinson declares, fifteen national distributing systems for motion pictures are being operated at an estimated cost of $20,000,000 annually and nearly all of these are controlled by "factory" producers. An eastern man carries $4,500,000 life insurance. He flatters himself, says Tom Sims. It must be interesting to a movie star to pick up the paper every day and find out who he's engaged to. THE COMMUNITY SPIRIT From Someret (Ky.) Journal: BORN—To Mr. and Mrs. Noah Watson and Mrs. Frank Todd, a boy. A Minnesota Indain chief who died the other day willed his 15 squawts to a state senator. He should have willed them to Norman Selby. In Sweden, a man can't buy a drink unless he produces a receipt showing he has paid his taxes. A scheme like that wouldn't work in this country. Any man who pays his taxes hasn't the price of a drink left. TRADE TROUBLES American toy exporting firm gets this letter from a customer in Lucknow, India: "The sample wax doll is all running away, owing to equatorial heat of Indian summer. Eight china dolls is to hand with six broken noses, and nine cats is come with only seven tails. The leopards is too much deficient in spots for our climate." Very easy to talk glibly about building up foreign trade. Not so easy, when you try it. Its basis, like everything else worthwhile, is infinite attention to details. Betting on the elections wasn't a sign of weakness in an 87-year-old man, San Francisco judge holds. Reports have it the man bet on Hiram Johnson. Good government comes only from choosing good men to run it. The only way to know a thing is to bump into it, and let it bump into you. There appears to be more of everything all the time except an inclination to work for a living. PARAGRAPHS By Robert Quillen Home: A place where some women works fourteen hours a day. Some men have jealous wives, and some never flirt with other women. When a man goes out for a whale of a time, he usually gets into hot water. Seven parts of virtue consists in the knowledge that the neighbors are watching. It appears that 98 per cent of the world's inhabitants have adopted the slogan: "Darn everybody else." He can love her still if he discovers her tongue is false. But not if he discovers her teeth are false. The bacchlor has one advantage. He doesn't have to ask where the needle and thread are when he wishes to sew on a button. If there were no sounds in the world except those made by human tongues, the deaf man wouldn't miss much. If you wish to see pride at its best, observe a nice little girl who has just learned to use the word "whom." The two great needs of a sixteen-year-old girl are (1) a mother who has sense, and (2) a father who has sense. Of course it is hard for a rich man to get to Heaven. Why should it be easier for a rich man than a poor one? Still, if there were no cake-caters, who would sympathize with the women whose husbands don't understand them? If John Bull can help us to enforce Prohibition, perhaps in time we can persuade him to enforce same of our other laws. That country, according to an American loan woman who has lived there several years and who is now stopping at the Hotel Astor. She says that the Japanese are really most cordial and that Toki is a most interesting place to live in, since so many nationalities are presented there. In discussing the customs of the land of her adoption she said: "It is interesting to see the concern that the Japanese women are beginning to take in world affairs. Many of them are keen for prohibition, and they are engaged in business there, though not to the extent that they are in America, nor in anything like the broad field.
