O. E. S. "ADVANCE NIGHT" IS EVENT OF EXCELLENCE
ADVANCE night ceremonies of Chispa chapter, O. E. S., was a pleasant occasion last night, staged in an elaborate setting. Each officer occupied the chair one degree higher than her usual position, giving rise to the name, "advance night," and is a courtesy accorded once each year. Much preparation had been made for the event and guests from chapters in Redondo Beach, Santa Ana, Orange, Fullerton, Yorba Linda, Whittier and many others were present.
Mrs. G. B. Daniels occupied the worthy matron's chair, Mrs. Tom Haster Associate matron and Mrs. Harry Sears, conductress. Three candidates, Mr. and Mrs. Emory Knipe and Miss Geraldine Fiscus, were initiated, and as marshal, Mrs. Josephine Beat delineated the escort work most beautifully.
Mrs. J. P. Brastad, matron of the chapter, presented Mrs. Daniels, acting matron, with a large bouquet of lovely roses, and graciously thanked her for her assistance and support during their work together a matron and associate matron, E. H. Metclaf and J. A. Clayes also spoke briefly. In response to words of welcome Mr. Knipe spoke for the candidates, telling of the binding tie between the Masonic and O. E. S. fraternities.
Each associate matron was presented with a fragrant favor a tiny bottle of perfume concealed in a rose. Other favors were baskets of candy in pink and blue. The dining room was elaborately trimmed in dainty color combination, the light shades being large pink roses. The table of honor, seating 22 guests and officers, was centered with a tiny lake, surrounded by potted plants and

The Woman's Foreign Missionary society of the White Temple will meet at the home of Mrs. W. H. Johnston, 601 North Los Angeens-st., Thursday afternoon at 2:30. This is the day for the annual Mite box opening and all members are asked to attend, bringing their boxes with them. Several interesting matters will be discussed and a social hour will follow the program. Election of officers will also be held. Cars will be at the church until 2:15 for all who have no other conveyance.
Interesting Prayer Service
With resumption of regular services in the First Presbyterian church Sunday morning, the congregation is looking forward to increased interest in the midweek prayer services. The topic for Wednesday evening of this week is "The Bible, a book of principals rather than rules." A good attendance is most inspiring to the leaders and it is urged that all do his part in swelling the number every Wednesday evening.
Leaves on Motor Trip
Mr. and Mrs. S. Tucker, of East North-st., left yesterday on a motor trip to Parump Valley in So. Nevada. Mr. Tucker has large realty holdings there and goes to combine business with pleasure. They were accompanied by their son, Earl Tucker, and son-in-law, Orrin Staples, of Randsburg.
To Enter Pomona College
Four young ladies who have contemplated entering Pomona college this year will go to that institution tomorrow and give the college "the once over." Registration opens on the 18th of this month and the girls will go up again of that time.

EBELL IN FIRST MEETING OF YEAR AT ELKS CLUB
WITH the newly chosen president, Mrs. Nellie Terry, in the chair, the Anahelm Ebell club held the first meeting of the club year yesterday afternoon in the ladies parlor of the Elks' clubhouse. The officers responded to roll call with appropriate quotations and members and officers repeated in unison "Collect for Club Women," by Mary Stuart.
The Domestic Science section with Mrs. R. B. Herman leaders, reported ready for work, the first meeting of to be with Mrs. Will K. Duckworth, and it is earnestly hoped that many new names will be added to the membership roll. The literary and dramatic section outlined its work for the year with Mrs. Frederick R. Schiller as leader.
A new section, history and travel, with Miss Kate Rea a instructor was reported by the curator, Mrs. G. M. Simpson, and will meet the second and fourth Tuesday in each month. Much enthusiasm was shown over this department and the membership list is growing.
The music section, with Mrs. G. H. Goodale leader, will hold its first meeting in October. Anyone wishing to join will be heartily welcomed and is requested to notify Mrs. Goodale soon as possible.
The president named the chairmen of the various committees, the complete membership of which will be announced soon. Interest again centers in the proposed new clubhouse, and with determination to see their hopes realized before another club year closes, efforts will be directed toward adding to the funds.
As the members pay their dues they are asked to sign a new roll then add sugar slowly and beat to a cream. Add the salt and extract and the beaten yolks of the eggs. Mix thoroughly, then add the milk. Sift the baking powder and flour together, then add to the other mixture, beat only enough to mix smoothly. Divide the mixture into three parts, making two layers of the plain, add to the third part teaspoonful of cloves teaspoonful of cinnamon teaspoonful of allspice cup of chopped raisins.
RECIPE
LAYER CAKE
2 cupfuls of sugar
1 cupful of vegetable shortening
1 teaspoonful of salt
1 teaspoonful of lemon extract
Yolk of 5 eggs
1 cupful of milk
4 cupfuls of flour
4 teaspoonfuls of baking powder
Cream the vegetable shortening,
White of an egg
1¼ tablespoonfuls of cream
½ teaspoonful of lemon extract
2 cupspoonfuls of confectioners sugar
Put the egg white, cream and extract in bowl. Stir together with a spoon then slowly add the sugar, beating until smooth. This recipe makes a very large cake.

"Music for Beginners" was the topic of an interesting talk by H. Easton Jenner, who has recently joined the musical ranks of Orange-co. An executive meeting was held later in the afternoon when several new members were admitted.
The October meeting will be a legislative meeting when several of the amendments will be explained. Forty members, besides the officers and directors were present yesterday which made it a very interesting one.
Congress of Mothers Board
The executive board of the Congress of Mothers will hold a meeting in Anaheim in the Junior high school building, Saturday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. Matters to be considered during the coming year will be taken up and preparation for the autumn general meeting will be arranged.

Kenneth McCoy of Fullerton and Walter B. Hude of Brea, both well known in Anaheim, left New York today bound for the British West Indies where they will take up their work in the oil fields as employees of the Kern-Trinidad Oil Co. The boys have signed up for a year. About eight days is required to make the trip. They were former employees of the Union Oil Co.
Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Collins are announcing the arrival of a 9 pound son born at "The Retreat" last evening at 6:45.
Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Ellis of Fullerton are the parents of a son weighing 7 pounds and 6 ounces at the Retreat at 1 a.m.
Mr. and Mrs. B. G. Tripp of the Mann Apartments are the perentts of an 8½ son who made its arrival today at 11:45 at the Retreat.
