MONDAY, SEPT. 11, 1922 THE ORANGE
ANAHEIM CHAMPION OF SOUTHERN CALIF.
Anaheim 102 200 302—10
Pasadena 300 010 011—6
ALL hall, Anaheim, for the third year So. Cal. champion of the Cal. Elks Baseball league as the result of a clean-cut 10 to 6 victory over Pasadena yesterday. Needless to say, it was a battle royal from start to finish with about everything happening that is known to baseball. Fulsome praise must go to cool-headed Harry Hughes for his sterling mound duty, and to noble teammates who backed up his efforts by pounding out 20 singles.
Incidently, Manager Loran Ury of the Crown City crew has yet to win a game on the Vernon field, yesterday's defeat being the third game dropped to Anaheim there—two this year and one last. No wonder, Ury was so slow making up his mind to Maier park for the series.
By winning yesterday, Anaheim established a record, having taken every Elks league game played this year. The next Elks game will be the 13th of the season, to be played on the 13th of October with the No. Cal. champions at the state convention in Santa Monica for the state gonfalon.
Doty Bush played a big game at second as usual and wasn't a bit nervous over the fact that just before the game he signed a contract with Secretary Weber of the Los Angeles Pacific Coast league team to tryout with the Angeles next spring. Bush made three bits and scores, was credited with four putouts, three assists and one error.
Weber also had a critical eye on Ray Bush and Philip Schrott in the left and right gardens respectively. Ray hit safely once in four times up, laid down a neat sacrifice and scored twice. Phil pounded the pill three times into safe territory, one a cow-tailer that bounced against the fence.
The game started off with thrills enough to satisfy anyone. With one out in the first, Ramage smacked the ball for two bases and scor-
CHANEY AND RAY REMATCHED FRIDAY
Those two good boys, Joe Chaney and Johnny Ray, have been rematched for next Friday's main event at the Athletic Club Arena. This should be pleasing news for local fight bugs as these two boys put up the most sensational scrap ever witnessed around these parts last Friday night when they battled their way to a draw after four vicious rounds of milling that had the big crowd in a frenzy.
It was without doubt the greatest set-to the clubs matchmaker, Billy Darnley, has had the good fortune to furnish his fans.
There was an immediate cry for a return match, both boys claiming they had won. So, while the iron was still hot, Darnley recruited the signatures of both Chaney and Ray. If the return meeting is just one-half as good another big treat is in store for the 'bugs'.
Both boys have started training
Weber also had a critical eye on Ray Bush and Philip Schrott in the left and right gardens respectively. Ray hit safely once in four times up, laid down a neat sacrifice and scored twice. Phil pounded the pill three times into safe territory, one a cow-tailer that bounced against the fence.
The game started off with thrills enough to satisfy anyone. With one out in the first, Ramage smacked the ball for two bases and scored on Dunn's single. Then Pasadena came back, and before Hughes had the pill working to suit him, three counters had been hung up on a three-bagger, four singles, two errors and considerable up-in-the-air playing generally.
There was nothing doing by either team in the second but the Anaheim Bills evened the score in the third when Pendleton and Glenn Callan scored on three singles, a walk and a sacrifice.
A two-spot margin was gained in the fourth when Doty Bush tripled, Ray Bush singled and Schrott doubled.
Pasadena hung up one in their half of the fifth and the score remained at the uncomfortable close figure of five to four until the lucky seventh when the Anaheim wrecking crew again tore loose, netting three markers on five singles, a sacrifice and one error.
In the eighth, Pasadena pushed their count up to five on three singles, but Anaheim got it back with interest in the ninth, counting two for a total of ten on three singles, a walk and sacrifice. Playing safe, Anaheim didn't begrudge the Crown City crew one more for a total of six in the shag end of the game on two singles and a wild throw.
The game was replete with thrills, and the crowd, even larger than on the preceding Sunday, because of the intense rivalry, made more noise than at a world's series. Pasadena may have a larger population than Anaheim, but it had no larger nor more enthusiastic contingent of rooters yesterday.
Manager Billy Knott today stated there would probably be a stiff practice game for the locals on the Anaheim high school field next Sunday, the opponents not yet being determined.
Manager Knott has been approached by several with the suggestion that Anaheim business houses close the afternoon of the State championship game. He will take the matter up with Secretary Frank Tausch of the Merchants Assn. and Secretary Malcolm Fraser of the C. of C. Knott will make a special trip to Santa Monica to look over the playing field there. If it is not satisfactory, he will make an effort to have the game staged at Vernon where Anaheim has the Indian sign.

MABEE WORKS HARD FOR GREAT MATCH
Roy Mabee, Anaheim's champ wrestler, is much interested in reports of the Dodd-Santel match before a state fair crowd of 10,000 at Sacramento. The match went to a draw.
Mabee is now down to hard training for his meeting with Santel at the Anaheim Athletic Club's Arena Tuesday evening of next week.
The world's light heavyweight wrestling champion is expected to arrive in Anaheim the last of the week to round up his training.

TODAY'S BLUNDER CORRECTED
Young people entering college as Freshmen would do well to remember that in college high school honors mean little or nothing. The prominent display of high school pennants, annuals sweaters and various insignia is considered poor taste by college upper-classmen. Freshmen should forget about high school days, and devote all their time and thought to modest efforts toward making good in the new environment.
