Saturday, Sept. 9, 1922 THE ORANGE CO. FAKE MAKERS OF BATTERIES SOUGHT This is the day of specialization in storage battery manufacture, says a bulletin of the Exide makers, which George Ennis of the Automotive Electric Co., has received. "Today we have manufacturers who assemble batteries, only purchasing all parts; those who manufacture plates only; those who manufacture plates and parts and parts and do some assembling; and those who don't do a d—n thing but ruffle the market, purchasing batteries, or plates or other parts to re-sell under their own name." The Exide manufacturers are seeking to get a list of these dealers, presumably in order to prevent their buying the Exide battery to re-sell it with their own name upon it. Ennis, among other distributors, has been asked to forward the names of any such concerns he may hear of. The new law, which goes into effect in January, provides, among other things, that: "No rear lamp shall be used upon any motor vehicle so operated unless approved by the registrar. Applications for the approval of a rear lamp, accompanied by a fee of $50, may be made to the registrar by any manufacturer thereof or dealer therein." The significance of the foregoing provision is found in a statement credited to Motor Vehicle Registrar Goodwin, of that state, in which it is explained that the new law simply aims to make compulsory a tail-light which will throw enough illumination upon rear number plates so that the figures may be identified. At present, it is pointed out, many rear lights merely show red and the number plates are in such a position that the figures cannot be distinguished. 22 MILES PER GAL. TO BISHOP, BACK The power and speed of the Essex have been emphasized frequently, says H. L. Grove, branch manager for Townsend & Medbury Hudson and, Essex distributors, but its economy of operation has been largely ignored. This week Grove heard of a striking instance of economy. J. H. Gilbert of 419 North Philadelphia-st, back from a vacation in Bishop, told of driving 750 miles on an average of 21.5 to 22.5 miles per gallon. The former was the figure going and the latter the one returning. From MoJave it is desert and mountain country, the heardest possible test of a motor says Grove. Oil consumption, also was small—only three pints for the entire district. Economies Enabled Maxwell Reductions Reductions on the Maxwell coupe and sedan, according to Wm. Robt. Wilson, president, are the direct result of manufacturing economies brot about by a demand for Maxwell deluxe closed cars unprecedented in this price field. "When the present-day Maxwell closed cars were first introduced," says Mr. Wilson, "their distinguished design and unusually fine finish enlisted the most enthusiastic comments, not only from the public, but from the motor car industry itself. "A demand resulted that we have never been able to satisfy even tho, production has been constantly increased. To take care of this still unsatisfied demand we have increased our closed car production schedule making possible economies, that permits us to offer a really fine closed car ot the public at a price almost unbelievably low." New Chandlers and Cleveland Impress The J. E. Walter Co., has sold a Chesterfield sport touring Cleveland car to Albert Lee Westlake of Brea. Albert Kozina of Villa Park has bought a new late model Chandler royal dispatch touring sport model. The new Chandler and Cleveland cars are interesting a lot of persons, the Jordan Cleveland and Chandler distributors report. This is particularly true perhaps of the new.Cleveland four-passenger coupe which, arrived about a week ago. Passorby have been coming in so often that the firm decided recently to keep open again until 9 o'clock at night, but meanwhile ran somewhat short of cars and changed their minds. IT'S BETTER FORD WITH EVERY YEAR NEW REO PHAETON ALL CAR SHOULD BE "Definitely the new Reo phaeton assumes a commanding position among fine motor cars," says C. W. Cromer of Dale & Co.'s local branch. "Motor car performance begins with the motor. The phaeton is powered by the sweet-running, agile Reo six-cylinder motor—the best known engine of its size and for its purpose in the world. "Good qualities in this new Reo phaeton are more than skin deep. Underneath the handsome exterior is the famous Reo chassis, stoutly made and with an inner extra frame hung several inches lower. In this is suspended the entire Reo power plant, leaving to the main frame the work of mitigating the road shocks that otherwise the motor and other power units would have to bear. That is one reason for the Reo's remarkable ability to hold to the road and its equally well-known reputation as a car that survives hard service." IT'S BETTER FORD WITH EVERY YEAR Because of the comparatively few changes, up to this year, made in the body and top of the Ford car, many have the impression that the Ford hasn't been changed much, says George Dunton, local distributor of the Ford and Lincoln cars and the Fordson tractor. This is a mistaken notion, declares the Ford Motor Company.
