A brief survey of the history of American instrumental music brings to light many old interesting facts that cannot fail to instruct and amuse the followers of this fine art.
We are told that in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in this country, instrumental music was by no means as common as vocal music. Only a few instrumental enthusiasts were to be found in New England. In those days about the only instruments in use were the harpsichord and the virginals and spinets. The latter two being similar in hearts of the public, the piano. Many other instruments spring into popularity but in time they lose something of their charm. Not so with the piano.
The writer had these points brought home to him very forcibly while visiting the Danz Piano Co., 162 West Center street. Louis J. Danz has devoted his whole life to this work.
this country, instrumental music was by no means as common as vocal music. Only a few instrumental enthusiasts were to be found in New England. In those days about the only instruments in use were the harpsichord and the virginals and spinets. The latter two being similar in some respects to the piano.
In the latter part of the eighteenth century there is to be found a proof that band playing was beginning to be popular, as advertisements are recorded for the sale of horns, flutes, clarinets, violins and trombones. In the day of our revolutionary war the fife became a favorite instrument. Not until the last of the eighteenth century did the Americans begin to manufacture musical instruments.
Thus is a short review of American instrumental music. It is interesting and amusing information—for how many of us know about these early activities in instrumental music? Since those olden days the evolution has gone on with various phases and some have it that we are just emerging from the jazz period.
During all these years there was one musical instrument that held its front rank place in the
Many other instruments spring into popularity but in time they lose something of their charm. Not so with the piano.
The writer had these points brought home to him very forcibly while visiting the Danz Piano Co., 162 West Center street. Louis J. Danz has devoted his whole life to the sale of pianos and we find his fine establishment a great home of fine pianos—due largely to his own judgment and experience. The Danz Piano Co., opened their place of business more than three years ago and since that time they have built up a most gratifying trade. They handle pianos only—that is the specialty, the old stand by the musical world. They are large dealers and they buy carloads at a time. And, too, they do their own financing, which fact has a most beneficial effect on the price of their goods—the effect which reflects creditably to the buyer. In their handsome store one will find such splendid pianos as Story & Clark; the Star made Richmond, Remington and Star. The well known Schoninger is there also. Pianos and player-pianos of the best make and at moderate and higher prices, just as the buyer desires. Mr. Danz is "not a price cutter—he merely sells for less."
