Friday, Sept. 8, 1922 IN SOCIETY Local Woman Chosen Mrs. M. E. Canby has been chosen as Anaheim representative of the domestic arts and needlework departments of Orange county fair and has informed the Chamber of Commerce that she must have any local exhibits which are to be assembled for that department not later than 5:00 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23rd, as on that date registration of such exhibits will close. For these departments all articles entered must be the handiwork of the exhibitor who must be a resident of Orange-co. A cash prize of $10.00 will go to the exhibitor receiving the most credits and $5.00 in cash will be presented to the one securing the second largest number of credits. Red, blue and white ribons will be issued to those whose work is considered worthy by the judges, one of whom will be an Anaheim lady soon to be designated by Mrs. Canby. All exhibits must be left with Mrs. Canby at the Blue Bird Shop, 322 E. Center-st as above directed. The classes in the departments named include: knitting, embroidery, drawn-work, crocheting, tatting, hemitching, luncheon tables (four place), china painting, (conventional and naturalistic), bedspreads, quilts and rugs, miscellaneous. Conservatory Opens The Anaheim Conservatory of Music, 422 West Center-st., reopens its winter course next week. Musical education in English, French, German and Spanish will be given in piano, voice, violin, flute, clarinet and saxaphone. Besides harmony, history and expression, the principal aim consists of imparting perfect time and good tune. For achievements acquired at the conservatory, the pupils receive credits in the public schools. A very convenient arrangement at the music school is made for the pupils who do not have pianos in their own homes, as they are given a practice hour on an extra instrument in the studio. Missionary Entertainment The program given last evening by the King's Heralds in the White Temple was most instructive and each participant did his or her best. The children, especially deserve great credit. The proceeds made a very neat sum, and the mite boxes contributed by the children were well filled. The demonstrations were very pretty, with the young women in native India costumes, and footlights or blue and white. The singing, with Messames M. Eugene Durfee, J. Marvin Hitchcock and Frank Montgomery, sopranos, and Mrs. Harry M. Jayne and Miss Margaret Lawrence, Altos, added much to the program. Dinner Party on Birthday As a pretty courtesy to Mr. L. D. Oliver, 'of Yorba Linda, Mrs. Oliver entertained a jolly group of friends at a dinner party, when Mr. Oliver was reminded that he had reached another mile-stone along his journey of life. Decorations of yellow and greenery graced the table and a sumptuous six-course dinner, complete in detail, was served. The birthday cake in yellow and white was an interesting feature of the repast. Hand painted place cards marked covers for Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Marsh, Dr. Lester Keller, Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Yerington, Mrs. Christopherson, Mr. Hargrave and the honoree and the hostess. This is why the total number of scenes filmed each day by this Paramount producer is usually numerically inferior to the totals of the other producing units. A visit happened on the set where William de Mille was making "Nice People," a super Paramount picture, which is coming to the California Theatre, next Sunday, and chatted with one of the members of the all-star cast. "How are things going?" the visitor inquired. "We've been working terribly hard today," was the actor's reply. "What do you call terribly hard work?" "Mr. de Mille filmed one scene this morning!" As a matter of fact, the actors engaged in "Nice People" were undergoing exceedingly strenuous treatment. In the midst of a period of warm weather, Mr. de Mille reached some of the most difficult scenes of the story. Long and nerve-racking rehearsals became the order of the day. The actual filming of the scene may require three minutes; the rehearsal occupies several hours. Wallace Reid, Bebe Daniels, Conrad Nagel, Julia Faye, Claire McDowell, Edward Martindel, Eve Sothern, Ethel Wales and William Boyd are important members of the Paramount Stock Company included in the cast of "Nice People" which was adapted from Rachel Crothers' play by Clara Beranger. ROUNDING UP IRISH REBELS DUBLIN, Sept. 8.—Free State troops today began a sweeping movement to round up the republican irregulars, particularly in Limerick and Tipperary counties, preliminary to the meeting of the dail eireann in this city tomorrow. Several battles were fought. Many republicans were captured. SHOULD KNOW FACTS ON MUSCLE SHOALS To the Editor: In order to keep the natural resources of the Muscle Shoals project from falling into the hands of special interests, the American Farm Bureau Federation sought Mr. Ford and prevailed upon him to make a bid for this project. This action took place over a year ago and for more than a year Congress has been deliberating on whether or not to accept the Ford proposal. The American Farm Bureau Federation, the Farm Bloc and all interests in Washington that are concerned with the welfare of the Farmers, have been diligently working for the acceptance of the Ford proposal, but the opposition from specialized interests have been so strong that there is no assurance that this proposal will be accepted by Congress. The acceptance of the Ford proposal will enable the California farmer; First, to obtain a cheaper fertilizer than they are now able to do; second, it will establish a new principle in financing our power development that will very much reduce the cost of electricity power; third, it maintains and protects the nitrate plant at Muscle Shoals so that it will be available to the Government for the manufacture of explosives in time of war; fourth, it opens the great phosphate bees of Tennessee and makes them accessible to water transportation which will be a direct benefit to the California farmers as their fertilizer can reach them by way of the Panama Canal, thus reducing freight cost. Opposition to acceptance of the Ford proposal comes from the fertilizer interest, the coal interest, the Chilean nitrate interests and the Americcan aluminum interests. The fight is a well defined one with these interests on one side with huge sums of money to spend in an effort to defeat the Ford proposal with the American farmers and the consuming public on the other side. The one institution actively engaged in having the Ford proposal accepted at the present time is the American Farm Bureau Federation and QUALITY SERVICE Save On Saturday The proof of the pudding is in the eating thereof.
