Wednesday, August 23, 1922 Nothing To Be Gained By Changing Co. Clerk "What is to be gained by changing county clerks?" This question is asked pointedly by friends of County Clerk J. M. Backs, who seeks re-election, and they say that so far no answer has been given other than this, "Nothing, absolutely nothing." It is pointed out that Backs has made an exceptional clerk. Through his four years in office he has demonstrated that he is fully capable of handling the job—and it is a job that is growing in responsibility and in the amount of work to be done. The legal work of the county passes through the office of the county clerk. If Backs did not handle that work satisfactorily, the courts and attorneys would know it. Because they know that Backs is a careful, conscientious official. Superior Judges Z. B. West and R. Y. Williams and 49 attorneys and that's about all there are—of this county have signed a statement saying "J. M. Backs for the past four years has shown himself qualified in every particular for the position, and has by his courteous treatment merited our thanks and consideration." These judges and attorneys endorsed Backs for re-election. Among the firmest backers of Backs are those who have come in contact with his work as county clerk. These include grand jurors, trial jurors, supervisors, county officials, and citizens generally. They are the ones who say they can see no reason for making any change, and who are urging that Backs be re-elected.
