THE KID” WRITES
HIS AUTOBIOGRAPHY
Gosh! Jackie Coogan’s written all “bout himself:
Yes Siree! And wrote it himself, too!
Jackie has confessed he has written an autobiography of his life which takes him from the time he first met Charlie Chaplin until the day he completed work on his “Oliver Twist” production.
In his own life story, “the kid” relates to meeting Paderewski, Sousa, Mme. Pavlowa, Carpentier, Babe Ruth, Jack Dempscy, Rex Beach, Mrs. Vanderbilt—and a host of others equally as popular and famous.
Jackie did not tell us how long it took him to write this story, but he did tell us it is titled “Some Life” and when we think back over that brief but meteoric career Jackie Coogan has experienced, it must have been some life and Jackie’s story must be some story. Jackie appears in “Olivor Twist,” which has its world premier next Tuesday and Wednesday at the California Theatre.

“HELL TO PAY WHEN WOMEN GET OFFICES”
ZION CIFY, Ill., Aug. 18—“God Almighty made man the symbol of the church itself. Whenever a woman usurps the man’s place and wants to fulfill his duties, you will have hell to pay.”
Wilbur Glenn Voliva, high priest of Zion, who also believes that the world is flat, that the devil smoked the first cigaret and the world will be destroyed before 1925, made that comment in an attack on women who seek political office.
“If there is any place on God’s earth where a woman ought not to be, it is in the United States senate,” said Wilbur.
“If I were a member of the senate and a woman were elected to it, I would resign and go home. God Almighty created the home and he ordained that man should be head of it. He never made a woman the head of any house.”

FIRST SHOWING OF JACKIE'S NEWEST
It isn't often that a city like Anaheim is accorded the unique distinction of staging a real world premier or first showing of a famous motion picture, but that is just what is going to happen here next Tuesday and Wednesday when the California Theatre presents Jackie Coogan in his super-feature picture, "Oliver Twist."
Everyone has read "Oliver Twist" from the pen of Charles Dickens. Everyone can readily visualize just what a wonderful "Oliver Twist" Jackie Coogan would make upon the screen. And to top it all off, just look at the array of stars that support Jackie in this picture:
There's famous Lon Chaney, noted "Frog" of "The Miracle Man," who plays the part of "Fagan;" Gladys Brockwell is "Nancy Sykes;" George Siegmann is "Bill Sykes;" Eduard Theobalt is "The Artful Dodger;" Lionel Belmore is "Mr. Brownlow;" Carl Stockdale is "Monks;" James Marcus is "Bumble the Beadle," and so on down the line of famous characters set forth so vividly in the book and the picture.
The California Theatre management is making mammoth efforts to put across this world premier in a big way, in fact, they expect it to be the biggest thing they have done since the grand opening of the California Theatre last year. Charles Higgins and his splendid orchestra has been engaged for this picture, and also Hazel Stallard, famous Orpheum stage star.
This event is being oloked forward to by motion picture interests all over the world. Jackie Coogan's popularity is boundless. "Oliver Twist" is universally known. The other players in the picture are famous. Therefore all eyes will be centered on Anaheim next Tuesday and Wednesday.
As a special treat every boy or girl who attends the Tuesday matinee will receive free a fine picture of Jackie Coogan.

With the Oil Operators
To the Bartholomae Oil Syndicate a new concern that entered the Long Beach field a few months ago goes the honor of bringing in the biggest well ever brought in on the top of the Hill at Long Beach. The big Bartholomae Syndicate well broke all predictions and outstripped anything on top of the Hill by coming in a 2200-barrel well. Neighoring wells drilled all around this record producer stopped at 3100 and 3200 Bartholomae went on to 3385 and passed thru 9 feet of heavily saturated oil sand that is believed to be responsible for the big production. The big well cut in on the upper sands also and in all is drawing on about 700 feet of oil sand. The 9 feet of sand found in the bottom of the hole was so heavily saturated with oil that it was black. The first well of this young company assures its success, and plans are underway for the drilling of a second well soon.
Cal-Mex Oil and Refining company is now listed as a producing company at Long Beach. This company battled with drilling troubles, had the water trouble a company can have, financed its project under great difficulties, conquered them all and has a nice producer as a reward. The well is flowing easily and quietly and will probably increase its production as it gets underway and established. The Orange County Drilling company is credited with bringing in the well and Vern Dumas the pioneer of the west side is credited with doing the heavy work, the financing and the holding of the company together until success dawned.
The Oceanic Oil Company is another company that has struggled against heavy odds, battled against all the things the oil operator has to battle and waited long and patiently for success to fall.Oceanic 2 at 3268 struck a nice sample of the "pay streag," and stopped drilling to set a string of ten inch casing. Indications point to this outpost well being a good one, and a credit to the McKeon Bros. who have worked while others slept to make Oceanic a success.Ed Herricks the Long Beach plun-

RICHFIELD WELL IN AFTER THREE YEARS
With the Oil Operators
Richfield came in for its share of the oil excitement this week with the final completion of the famous Richfield-Yorba Oil Co. No. 1. Neal Anderson took this well over after the Richfield Yorba Oil Co. had worked on it for almost three years and made a 200 barrel well. The trick was done by getting the old hole cleaned of pipe and junk and going ahead 13 feet, making the completion depth 3460.
The Standard Oil Company was rewared with an 90 barrel well for drilling Kraemer 2-17A to a depth of 4493 feet. Kellogg No. 2 deep test well drilled to 5660 is on a test pumping some muddy water.
Deep drilling at Richfield got another jolt when the Union Oil Company's Chapman No. 5 drilled to 4327 came in last week a 68 bbl well.
Drilling at Buena Park by the Standard Oil Company has reached close to 4200 feet. The outlook has not changed very materially for the better, despite the insistent reports that the Standard has an oil well. Similar to all the wild cat projects undertaken by the S. O. Co. the Buena Park well be carried to a satisfactory deep test hole.

The Oceanic Oil Company is another company that has struggled against heavy odds, battled against all the things the oil operator has to battle and waited long and patiently for success to fall. Oceanic 2 at 3268 struck a nice sample of the "pay streag," and stopped drilling to set a string of ten inch casing. Indications point to this outpost being a good one, and a credit to the McKeon Bros. who have worked well others slept to make Oceanic a success.
Ed Herricks the Long Beach plunger in oil has adopted Rockefeller's maxim "Keep ahead of the drill" and gone out west a mile from present production and located a well adjoining the Flood Control. The rig for this well is up and drilling is understood to be started at an early date.
The Petroleum Midway has resumed work on the Fields discovery well and will try out a series of water tests to locate a small amount of water that has menaced the well since it came in a 450 barrel well six weeks ago. Originally drilled to 3354 this well made a splendid showing and let the operators in on a few secrets in a new section of the Long Beach field that seems to have some wonderful possibilities.
That portion of the field near the Shell Company's first producer at Long Beach, the Alamitos lease has proven that a little deeper is an oil sand capable of producing 100 barrels well. Alamitos No. 2 drilled to 3625 started off at 984 barrels. The success of the Shell will undoubtedly mean the deepening of the discovery well (the Crest Oil Co's wells, the Ramsey City well and others in this vicinity). In addition to the bringing back of the Alamitos No. 2 the Shell Company added 3100 barrels of new production to the field by bringing in Dobyns No. 2 at 3318 an 1900 barrel well, Martin 1-A at 3352 a 600 barrel well (and Pickler No. 3 at 3309 a 800 barrel producer).
The United Oil Company did a nice piece of work on Haas No. 1 by bringing ot back a 2200 barrel well. This well was completed a few weeks ago a 2000 barrel well, 3285 deep, developed water and had to be "killed" The well is back making 28 gravity oil, 2200 barrels of it, and the production is clean.
The Standard Oil Company is making preparations to abandon three wells in the Long Beach field. Bixby No. 2 the deepest of the trio went down to 5610 and failed to find anything that looked like oil. Long Beac Savings & Trust No. 1 stopped drilling at 5166 and looked like there was no chance for getting anything. Sylvester No. 1 went 4930 feet without encountering a showing. The persons from whom the Standard leased these properties should have no kick coming, as the Standard Oil Company did not quit or even think of quitting until every sign and chance for oil had been exhausted.

REGISTERED DEMO; RUNS REPUBLICAN
"Did you know that John Mellen, the man from Orange who is candidate for state assembly, is registered as a democrate?" queried a friend of E. H. Metcalf, Anaheim's candidate for the office.
Well, he is. I heard about it and took the trouble to look it up at the county clerk's office. I think the people of republican Orange-co are entitled to know about it."
Mellen is seeking the nomination at the primaries on both the democratic and republican tickets.
