Wednesday, August 16, 1922 ENGLAND BELIEVES KLAN REPORT JOKE LONDON, Aug. 16. — England sought vainly today for evidence of alleged organizations here with which J. O. Woods, editor of the Ku Klux Klan Searchlight, declared the Klan would combine to "maintain white supremacy." Reports from the United States that Woods had declared a "second hundred thousand," British organizations in sympathy with the Ku Klux Klan, existed here, mystified officials. They believe that the American editor has been misled by jokers or criminals into false ideas concerning some British intentions. Newspapers are probing the "mystery." Some suggest someone is "spoofing" Woods. Others express mild resentment. None have found evidence to support the klansman's claims. Woods was reported as saying he came here as personal representative of Edward Y. Clarke, acting imperial wizard, and that a British and French league had agreed to join the Ku Klux Klan. "STEWART SELLS THE GROVES" 236 West Center St. AMERICAN FLAG IS ONLY MODERN TOUCH FORT DUCHESNE, Utah, Aug. 16. The Indians of Fort Duchesne have paid their annual homage to the Sun. They recently held their Sun festival, which was largely a wild Indian dance, handed down through hundreds of generations. It lasted three days, during which the Indians went through the phases of the dance without food, drink, or rest. On the appointed day, the braves bedecked in their war paint and feathers, rode out of the bushes at a point fourteen miles from here, and began to circle round a pole, opened on top of which was a large buffalo head. Ear-splitting sereeches, such as may have startled the first pioneers of the West, accompanied by volley after volley of shots directed at the buffalo head on the pole, opened the spectacular dance. The only modern feature of the dance was the presence of an American flag, which was carried by the leader in opening the dance. He who rests often in the sun-dance is weakling, and hence the braves continued their barbaric hop, skip and shuffle around the pole until some fell from exhaustion, while others rested only long enough to be able to continue again.
