Tuesday August 15, 1922 FAKE AERIAL HERO LEAVES JAIL TODAY Concluding his sentence of ten months in the Orange-co. jail today, Willis Gordon Brown is free, having filed a pauper's oath, to avoid payment of $1000 fine. Brown, it will be remembered, cut quite a swath in Los Angeles among the marriageable widows and impressible girls, under the claim of being an overseas aerial hero. While the department of justice was searching for him on the charge of conspiring to transport from the state a stolen automobile, he fled with one of the widows to a cabin in Sequoia forest. Traced there and arrested, he was returned, but again escaped and made his way to Honolulu. He was recognized on the boat by a stenographer from a law office, who wirelessed the news to the assistant U. S. marshal, and through whose efforts he was captured. STEWART TRAVELS 300 MILES IN 3 DAYS James E. PHILIPPINE LABOR GOES TO HAWAII CHICAGO, Aug. 10.—Urbana Cruz in her hatched house of nipa grass, glanced up from a great hoop of snowy nainsook on which she was embroidering flowers. "In the Philippines," she said, "little girls learn embroidery at their mother's knees. The art was introduced from Spain in the sixteenth century and Philippine women have inherited their skill in delicate and intricate needlecarft." The pretty Filipino's needle showed her own adeptness as it flashed with marvelous rapidity over the white cloth. "Undergarments of nainsook and longcloth cut in the Bonita factory at Manila," she went on, "are distributed among the homes to be embroidered. All day long the women make embroidery in the nipa cottages while the men bleach the garments in the sun and launder them in stone basins in pure water drawn from deep wells by ancient bamboo sweeps. "Many girls become famous for their skill in special kinds of embroidery—calado, a-jour, raised work scalloping, flower patterns. So when the design calls for several kinds of work, the garment may pass through many hands." Urbana Cruz, Raquel Barolme, and Pedro Navarro, a designer, were brought to the United States by a Chicago company from the firm's lingerie factory in Manila. They have been in this country for more than a year demonstrating in nipa houses set up in drygoods stores in many cities in the art of making these beautiful, Bonita hand-embroidered garments. Soon they will sail for the Philippines. But they will leave behind them quaint impressions. For thousands of American women in the fur- ANNOUNCEMENT IN PRINT A smash in the delivery in Anahale by C.
