GERMANS GOING TO COLONIZE IN BRAZIL BERLIN, Aug. 10—Director Schellmann of the German-Brazilian Collaborating Society is to leave for Brazil shortly to study colonization prospect in Sasna Elizabeth and Matta Groso. Schellman, as head of the corporation, represents the interstate of 1192 families. He plans to erect standard houses in these colonies. Promises of support have been given by various business men, including the Brazilian consul at Hamburg. Plans are also on foot for setting up a German colony at Bashia Blanca, and to turn the stream of German emigrants into Angola, where it is claimed, emigration conditions are most favorable. U. S. WINS BALLOON RACE GENEVA, Aug. 9—Having covered a distance of 940 kilometers, Oscar Westover, American pilot, today was considered the likely winner of the James Gordon Bennett cup balloon race. Water Co., Friends of Mr. Calkins will be very sorry to learn that he will leave at once for his old home in the east. His daughter, Mrs. Longhorn, and family, who come here at the death of Mrs. Calkins, a year ago, are leaving, and Mr. Calkins decided to go with them. His many friends here are hoping that he will remember California so kindly as to return after a visit there. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Kinsman, and daughters, and Miss Dessa Jepson were week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. R. Selover at their mountain lodge at Barton Flats. Friends here of Mrs.-Fred Fuller of Fullerton will be interested to learn that she gave a radio concert yesterday (Monday) morning in Los Angeles from the Bullock station. Mrs. Fuller resided here some six or seven years ago and will be remembered as Miss Ruby Kent. Miss Dessa Jepson is one of the new teachers secured by the local board for the coming year. Miss Jepson taught in Y. L. there or four years ago and was very popular with a host of friends who are glad to have her enrolled again. Mrs. Harold Marsh, who formerly taught here has accepted a splendid position on the Brea staff and will move there the latter part of the month. Friends here are glad to hear of her advancement but are sorry to lose so capable a teacher.
