Wednesday, August 9, 1922 THE ORANGE BEAUTY CONTEST AT COUNTY FAIR, PLAN Decision to hold a beauty contest, discussion of the designation of a special day for the Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions' clubs, and encouraging reports of exhibits to be entered were among the features of a meeting late yesterday afternoon on the Orange County Fair committee. The fair will be held in Santa Ana, opening Sept. 27. The entertainment committee made the recommendation that beauty contest be staged, and it was announced that Mrs. Ellie Rhodes had consented to head the supervising committee and is now enlisting other prominent women as her aides. The suggestion that one day of the fair be designated a special day for Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions clubs of the county was not acted upon. Action was deferred until a later date, when the full week's program is outlined. Chairman E. G. Stinton of the livestock committee reported more than 38 cattle, mules, Shetland ponies and hogs had been entered to date, and he looks for a large display in this department. Chairman Howel of the poultry committee reported there would be more and better birds on display this year than last. Mr. A. Schofield will judge the utility class and W. H. Williams of Garden Grove, will judge the fancy birds, he announced. Chairman R. L. Bisby of the publicity committee, reported progress all along the line, including ordering all bulletin, movie slides, wind shield stickers, auto banners, etc. and that the newspapers were evidencing their hearty co-operation by printing news items about the fair. It was reported that school board of the county and teachers were opposed to a day's holiday for the fair and this is holding up temporarily the movement to have Sept. 27 declared a general holiday so that all might attend the fair on the opening day. Call licity committee, reported progress all along the line, including ordering all bulletin, movie slides, wind shield stickers, auto banners, etc. and that the newspapers were evidencing their hearty co-operation by printing news items about the fair. It was reported that school board of the county and teachers were opposed to a day's holiday for the fair and this is holding up temporarily the movement to have Sept. 27 declared a general holiday so that all might attend the fair on the opening day. A "pulling match," with various teams of horses and mules competing, was suggested and this may be worked out as one of the fair entertainment contests. The idea would be it was said, to see which team could pull, on a substantial sled, the heaviest load of rocks, etc. N. Travis, who has conducted many such contests has volunteered to direct one should it be held. Concession space on the fair grounds will be sold and the concessionsaires will be under the direction of the fair committee, it was decided after the American Legion's proposal to handle all concessions had been tabled. The service men wanted to great a commission for handling concessions, it was felt, and it was decided best that all space be sold by the fair committee and manager. A motion also prevailed against the subletting of concession space without the consent of the committee. Vice-Chairman W. B. Williams presided in the absence of Chairman D. Eyman Huff, and other committeemen present were J. C. Metzgar secretary-manager; A. H. Moore, R. D. Flaherty, S. H. Finley, L. G. Swales, and J. R. Schofield. The next meeting of the committee will be held next Tuesday afternoon at four o'clock.
