LA HABRA ITEMS
LA HABRA, Aug. 1.—Informal callers at the home of Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Davis Sunday numbered a number of old friends. Mr. and Mrs. Griffith Condron were visitors, being former neighbors in Garvanza. Later Mr. and Mrs. I. Pellicott and daughter of Palms and Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Birkhahn and son, Phillip, Jr., of Eagle Rock were guests. Mrs. Pellicott and Mrs. Birkhahn are sisters and as Miss Esther and Miss Hazel Davidson were frequent visitors in La Habra some years ago. The former is a well known musician of Los Angeles, and is identified with the Ritter school of expression there. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond M. Phillips (Wanda Davis) and daughter were guests of their parents also.
Mrs. T. L. Jackson of Glendora is here to spend a few days with her son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Jackson.
Mrs. Ethelyn Hart has been called east to St. Paul because of the serious illness of her father. She left Los Angeles Monday and will be gone several weeks. Her little daughter, Margaret, will be with her aunt and Uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hart at Jessmine during Mrs. Hart's absence.
The last unit of the sidewalk on Central ave the street was widened is now being laid and with the completion of this work the task of "moving the business section" of La Habra will be finished. Deciding that the boulevard was too narrow for a growing town the property owners took up the matter and ten feet on each side was deeded to the county. The brick buildings were moved back, the pavement widened and new sidewalks built. Now after months of work La Habra presents an appearance much improved.
Mrs. Anna Brookhouser who is spending a while visiting her daughter, Mrs. Clay Moore at San Diego is planning a trip each the later part of the summer.

CONCRETE TOWERS
MYSTERY CLEARED
LONDON, Aug. 1.—Mystery surrounding the huge concrete towers built by the admiralty just before the armistice was cleared up when Lieutenant Commander Kenworthy, during debate at the commons, explained that they were new anti-submarine weapons.
Toward the end of the war the admiralty completed two tremendous concrete structure, much like disproportionate pill boxes, weighing thousands of tons, at channel ports.Ten other towers were under construction when the armistice was signed.Work was slowed on them, but finishing touches were put upon the completed towers.
When the excitement of the war had died down the government frequently was questioned as to the proposed use of the towers。它 was evident they were to be sunk on the bottom of rivers or in shoals at sea.
They would have been occupied by the anti-submarine crews, where, reinforced by steel, they would have become island forts.
