PARTY FOR LITTLE DAUGHTER ON TWELFTH YEAR MRS. GILBERT TULL, of 825 W. Broadway, entertained very graciously yesterday afternoon in honor of the twelfth birthday anniversary of her daughter, Miss Katharine. The guests gathered early in the afternoon and until they departed for their homes a continual round of pleasure was enjoyed. Many games were played and prizes were awarded the winners. The living and dining rooms were attractively fixed in pink and white, as also was the dining table where refreshments were served. Mrs. Tull was assisted in the entertaining by Mrs. J. Wilbur. Guests at the happy affair were the Misses Florence Smith, Gladys Hobson, Fletta Eisenhauer, Ione Mazz, Alice Twinem, Leona Reona and Ramona Bever, Martha Adams, Lone McMurphy, Thelma Kiler, Lucy Bell Morgan, Ava Wallace, Vesta Roberts, Dorothy Kopfei, Ada Helinze Alma Cailor, Hilda Salaya, Carmel Ruston and the gracious hostess, Miss Katherine Tull. Two Barbecues Sunday The employees of the Standard Oil Co. and their families will be the guests of the Standard Oil Co. employees of the Murphy-Coyote lease Sunday in a large grove near this lease. On account of the men who are working on the various towers and who will be unable to be there during the day, two barbecued meals will be served. Hundreds of pounds of big juicy steaks will be barbecued and other goodies will be devoured with it. Two orchestras have been engaged to furnish music for dancing and a number of funny clowns have been secured to furnish amusement for the children. A special dance floor has been constructed and four big flood lights have been set up to make the setting bright at night. American Bride Best of All Brides of America today have a great advantage over those of the old countries, especially royalty, in the matter of dress, for only the most formal weddings in this country demand trains, and what romance is there in formality. Although it has been sung for years that "Every American Girl Is a Queen," she may put a becoming little sport hat over her bobbed hair, climb into the auto beside her future "lord," accompanied by the little king, Cupid, and his away to a minister, take her vows, which usually last far longer and chafe less than thosge of her royal sister, and return fresh for her job the next day. While her unfortunate European sister must wear a gown of yards and yards of precious silks and laces, four to six yards of train with veil, anchored with the family jewels, an interminably long ceremony, then ride about the country to be seen, and incidentally to see very little. This was the case with a recent wedding in Europe, and for the next several months the bride and groom must make visits for the "good of state," including formal entertainments which must not fall to bore. The little American bride has all the advantages, and after all what is better than simplicity? Coming State Picnic Dates Iowans are again fattening up yellow-legged chickens and making trial "batches" of good picnic foods, as the date for the annual summer outing has been set for August 10, in Bixby's park, Long Beach, at which more than 50,000 former residents of the state of corn and pork will gather for a day of reunion. Other picnics scheduled to be held in the pretty park are the Illinois society tomorrow, the 22; the Nebraska picnic, on August 5, and a joint picnic by three states, Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada, will bring together a large crowd, and on July Vacationing In Catalina The Misses Callye Sparks, Lucille Gloege, of Covina, and Edna Hochuli will go tomorrow at Catalina where they will join the Misses Alice Pannier and Elsa Bloch to pass a week in vacationing on the chewing gum man's island. Walter Hochuli and Howard Pannier will also join the party making a merry, congenial crowd. The Misses Pannier and Bloch have been there a week, and will return at the end of next week with the others of the party. Double Wedding Yesterday A very pretty double wedding took place yesterday afternoon at the office of Judge J. S. Howard on So. Los Angeles-st. when two young couples from Long Beach were united in marriage. Melford C. Alsenz was married to Gertrude E. White, and James Melvin Howard was married to Alberta L. Hunter. The two young men were oil workers. Both young couples expect to make their home in Long Beach. Heying's Pharmacy THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER, ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA PAGE Local Churchmen at Synod Rev. and Mrs. T. H. Walker and Mrs. William Wallop went to Pasadena today to attend the session of the Presbyterian synod of California, which opened last evening with a sermon by Rev. Warren Hall Landon, retiring moderator and president of the San Francisco Theological Seminary. A daily feature of the meeting is a series of early morning services at which Rev. Arthur Lee Odell, D. D., pastor of the First church of Phoenix, will lead the delegates in a study of Christ's parables as applied to problems of the present age. Scores of noted leaders of Presbyterianism are gathered for the week's meeting. Rev. Walker anticipates much benefit from the conference wherein he smaller problems confronting the medium-sized church may be discussed. Each department will be discussed in a class, and all delegates interested may present their cases, which will receive thorough discussion. Particularly interesting are the problems of finance and advertising. Several social affairs have been arranged for diversion throughout the week. Annual Christian Picnic That line of automobiles filled with happy faced youngsters and smiling oldsters, wending its way Orange-county-parkward today was composed of the Bible school and church congregation going for the annual outing. Great baskets of provisions with everything to satisfy the most fastidious appetite, or the most extensive appetite accompanied the merrymakers, and a list of stunts and contests enlivened the afternoon hours. Teachers had forgotten their dignity and played with all the fervor of youth on the slides, swings, etc. In all, it was a day long to be remembered by all participants. Birthday Surprise L. E. Morthland, salesmanager for James E. Appleby, Durant distributor for Anaheim, was pleasantly surprised Wednesday evening when a number of friends dropped in to celebrate his birthday. In the party were Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Beard, Anaheim; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Trissel and Miss Lola Neff, Whittier; and Mr. Geo. Grady, Santa Fe Springs. The evening was spent at cards, followed by refreshments. L. A. Guests at Ruicks Mrs. Bess Newberry surprised Mrs. H. C. Ruick yesterday afternoon by coming down from Los Angeles to spend the afternoon and evening. At dinner time they were joined by Mr. Ruick. After dinner, Jimmie Thomas, of Los Angeles, came to the Ruick home and the evening was spent in playing cards. C. E. Social Tonight The Presbyterian Christian Endeavor will hold a social tonight in Fulerton at the home of Miss Sophia Zineh, on Jacaranda Place. The C. E.'s will meet at the church at 7 o'clock, where autos will be waiting to take all who may desire to go. A jolly evening is sure to happen. Installation Tonight Lois Rebekah lodge will hold its regular session this evening, when installation of the new officers will be held. The rites will be performed by Mrs. Mary E. Palmer and her installing staff, of Orange. The usual large crowd of not less than 250 are expected. All visiting Rebekahs and other members are cordially invited. The affair is a promising one.
