ACCELERATION MARK SET BY NASH CAR
Waiting for the signal "GO!" from the traffic officer at any busy street intersection in the downtown district, in any city a number of automobiles, with motors purring impatiently, are found. Given the signal they all start forward at once. Then one or two of the group pull out ahead, and the others drop behind. That is accelerating, something the manufaeurers have striven for years to attain, while in most cases the lack of acceleration denotes a faulty adjustment of the carburetor, it sometimes denotes lack of power and sufficient speed.
The recent record run made by a strietly stock Nash Six touring car driven by Chas. H. Bigelow and Arthur B. Marshall, between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City, in which a time mark of 26 hours, 21 minutes was set up, has led members of the Troy Motor Sales Company's organization, Nash six distributors for Southern California and Arizona, to conduct a series of other tests to prove further the stamina and ability of the car, one of which was an acceleration test, says Bob White of the Bob White Co., Nash and Franklin distributors.
The car was driven by Marshall, and a stop watch recorded the time the car took to attain certain speeds from a standing start, and others from a 5 to 10 mile an hour start. Each test was carefully "clocked," and then rechecked on a similar test, with the following results:
From standing start to 30 m. p. h., 6 3-5 seconds; standing start to 40 m. p. h., 12 3-5 seconds; standing start to 50 m. p. h., 19 3-5 seconds; 5 miles per hour to 30 m. p. h., 5 1-5 seconds; 5 miles per hour to 50 m. p. h., 19 seconds; 10 miles per hour to 35 m. p. h., 8 3-5 seconds.

Average Car's Life
7½ Years; Velie Co.
"Do you know what the average length of life of an automobile of the first grade?" asked McGraw Bros. of Fullerton, Velie distributors. "The question is even more interesting to makers than to the motoring public. It has an important bearing on all market forcasts.
Experts of research and survey of the automobile industry have tried in recent years to give a trustworthy answer, but it has proved Tar more difficult than would be supposed.
"The reports show a marked tendency to increase when new sales decline. The fluctuations of the market therefore keep the statistician busy revising his figures.
"But there is no doubt that the good cars of today have a much longer life than formerly.
"At the beginning of this year it was apparently 6½ years, as compared with 5½ years in 1918 and 4½ years in 1916. In addition to better construction, we have better roads, increasing knowledge and care on the part of owners, and a stronger desire to economize.
"Velie Motors Corporation reporting on a wide survey of Velle owners recently taken, finds the average life of the car to be 7½ years. It should be noted that this survey was principally on six-cylinder cars.
"From this report all exceptional cases are rigidly excluded—such as the first Velle which was still in use after 12 years of use, in which it had been driven in excess of 170,000 miles and many others which have done over 100,000 miles in nine to ten years of use. Extraordinary length of life and mileage will be found in every good car says the report. What is sought is the real average."

After a final try-out of a brand new system, the Automobile Club of Southern California has just announced that approximately 250 red "blinks" signs will be placed on the roads of the southern counties.
This is one of the greatest efforts on the part of the Auto Club to help make the roads safer for motorists. The erection and maintenance of these signs is a great undertaking, and this is the first time that it has ever been attempted by any motorizing organization in America.
The signs are of enamelled metal, with thick red "bull's eye" lenses, capable of reflecting the danger signal for hundreds of feet. The system has already been tried out and found to be excellent.
Only at very dangerous points will the signs be placed, say Club officials, and so every time an auto driver drives by J. "THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER, 'ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA'"
WEST, NORTHWEST PROSPERING AGAIN
Conditions in the West and Northwest are improving very rapidly according to the report of a well known car manufacturer of Indianapolis, who is making an extended trip through this territory.
"The smaller dealers are all ordering cars for delivery during the summer months and many new connections are being made which is in itself indicative of the renewed interest and faith in the permanence and stability of the automobile industry.
"Spring wheat in Minnesota and the Dakotas," this man said, "is reported doing well, and the rye acreage is exceptionally large. There is also a very bright outlook for a good rfuit crop. In Arkansas and Southern Missouri there were excellent berry crops which were unusually well marketed.
The oil industry in Oklahoma and Texas is in better condition than it has been for sometime, with drilling on the increase under the stimulus of improved prices. Much greater activity is noted in the large mine centers of Colorado, and Montana will have a larger wool crop this year by 5% over last year.
"Lumber production in the Northwest is 12 percent above normal, with orders running far in excess of production, and there has been a very appreciable increase in the payrolls in Seattle and other larger cities in this section of the country.
"With business so good in the other lines, it is only natural that we should feel the good effects. Buying of motor cars will most likely increase during the summer months, because people must have motor cars and are perfectly willing to buy them when they are making money and know that prices on most cars now listed at right prices.
"This condition is true with us, as our sales reports show a steady gain during the past in this territory, with orders for delivery of cars all during the summer months."
TIRE MAN OFFERS FREE TAX SERVICE
R. N. Mendoza of the Reliable Tire Company, is offering his assistance to operations in this vicinity in the preparation of Federal tax reports, one of which the capital stock tax report must be filed during this month. Service will be free of charge unless extensively involved.
Mendoza states that during his six years of experience in Federal tax matters, he has found that many corporations not fully conversant with the ramifications of the tax laws, render incorrect reports and in many cases pay more of a tax than is required. Also many corporations become delinquent and are subsequently fined for such delinquency, notwithstanding the fact that their intentions were to comply with the law.
All corporations must file this report annually, whether or not they are doing business or have an income, so long as they have a legal existence.
Mendoza has a supply of forms and regulations and can be reached at his tire store or by calling 379J.
Goodyear Cross-Rib Cords Wonder Tire
Production of the new cross-rib cord tire marks the opening of a sales epoch for all Goodyear dealers, among whom in Anaheim is Nemo & Bock.
The new tire, based on the same principles of design and construction used in the justly popular All-Wear Tread tires, is a quality product. It is built to render the same type of faithful tire performance as all Goodyear tires, in their various classes, have rendered before.
Addition of the new cross-rib tire to the line of the Goodyear dealer enables him to meet the demands of trade which heretofore has sought tires on a price basis. The new cross-rib
Unprecedented Climb Made by Studebaker
A Studebaker light-six has just added new laurels to its many records for power and endurance, being the first car ever to reach the summit of Tillsbury Knob, near Nanticoke, Pa.
For years the residents of Nanticoke and vicinity have looked toward Tillsbury Knob, one of the highest mountains in Luzerne county, convinced that its heights could never be sealed by any vehicle, either motor or horse-drawn.
The car that finally succeeded was driven by J. Williams of Nanticoke, and the test proved not only of the sturdiness of the car, but also the ability of the driver. The ascent was made over a mere foot path for no road leads to the summit, undergrowth and even trees furnishing obstacles in climbing this mountain of shale and rock, but the car maneuvered its way upward until the summit was reached.
As an indication of the sharp grades encountered during the ascent the mountain rises to a height of 700 feet in the course of the one-mile trip from the base to summit. The light-six which made this unprecedented climb under its own power had previously been driven over 30,000 miles and still retained the original front tires that came with the car.
Williams started up the mountain-side with an ordinary pair of automobile tire chains on the rear wheels, but the rough stones and boulders soon broke them to pieces, and a set of heavy half-inch chains had to be attached.
On reaching the summit of the precipice, the car reposed there for one week. The headlights were turned one each night and record-making light-six could be seen for miles around. At the end of a week, the job of driving down the mountain was tackled, and proved almost as thrilling and difficult as the ascent.
STEAM MOTOR IN AIR

With business so good in the other lines, it is only natural that we should feel the good effects. Buying of motor cars will most likely increase during the summer months, because people must have motor cars and are perfectly willing to buy them when they are making money and know that prices on most cars now listed at right prices.
“This condition is true with us, as our sales reports show a steady gain during the past in this territory, with orders for delivery of cars all during the summer months.
“In addition to the number of orders that are coming from our present dealers, we are closing many new connections in the West and Northwest.
“On the whole, the situation is good with every indication that it is going to be considerably better.”
900 Orders Unfilled For New Jordan Cars
All production records of the Jordan Company were again broken in June, the output exceeding that of May.
The Jordan Company is carrying over into July 900 orders which they were unable to deliver in June, and with a schedule of 1000 cars for July this means that there are enough orders on hand to keep the factory going at top speed until Sept. 1.
Earnings in June will approximate twice the preferred dividend requirements for the year.
The outlook for the industry as a whole for the last half of the year is very promising, according to Edward S. Jordan.
“If any business man will take a piece of paper and pencil and draw a rectangle, dividing this rectangle into twelve sections representing the twelve months of 1922, I think he may fairly well establish two curves, one relating to the progress of general business, and the other to the progress of the automobile industry.
“The curve of general business will very likely show a gradual rising tendency from January 1st, 1922 to January 1st, 1923.
“The curve of the automobile industry will show a gradual rise to the first of March, and then a very rapid rise until about the 15th of July. Then the automobile curve will have a tendency to coincide with the rising curve of general business.”
“The bulge in the automobile industry in the first six months of the year is due to a demand for new cars for replacement of cars already badly worn, with a corresponding demand on the part of the public for second hand cars.”
The suggestion to pedestrians to walk on the left side of the highway so as to face oncoming vehicles is merely that to adopt a practice long among whom in Aubheim is Nemo & Bock.
The new tire based on the same principles of design and construction used in the justly popular All-Weather Tread tires, is a quality product. It is built to render the same type of faithful tire performance as all Goodyear tires, in their various classes, have rendered before.
Addition of the new cross-cirib tire to the line of the Goodyear dealer enables him to meet the demands of trade which heretofore has sought tires on a price basis. The new cross-cirib meets the price-buyer's question and at the same time carries the backing of recognized merit in the name Goodyear.
Here are these points of merit—and every one of them is a good selling argument which dealers can use every day:
These tires in the straight side type are approximately 10 per cent oversize—having the same cross-sectional measurements as our All-Weather Tread cords.
The additional air volume means the same cushioning and easy-riding qualities as found in All-Weather Tread cords.
Furthermore, it means interchangeability with not only All-Weather Fread cord tires, but also with other oversize cord tires, without any question of affecting the differential clearness, etc.
The same high-grade, Arizona and Egyptian long staple cotton, used in the All-Weather Tread cords, is being used in the straight side Cross-Rib cords.
The same number of plies are used in these tires as in the All-Weather Tread, except in the 5", where six plies are used instead of eight. In this case two breaker strips are used thereby minimizing and distributing road shocks.
Also, the sidewalls are reinforced in this size by inserting a strip of rubberized fabric which extends from the toe of the bead about half way up the sidewall.
The Goodyear patented group-ply process is used in building the Straight Side Cross-Rib cord tires. This is a method of carecass building controlled and used exclusively by Goodyear. Two or more plies are applied with the cords running in the same direction. This forms one group. The next group of two or more plies is applied at a right angle to the first.
It might be a good idea, says A. Fan, for drivers and ranchers alike to watch trees that overhang the boulevards.

DURANT WINS OVER 15 OTHER MAKES CAR
The Durant four-cylinder touring car contesting against 15 American and European cars, won over all competitors recently in a road test in Mexico, the three principal factors of which were speed, endurance and hill climbing ability. The race was run to determine efficiency, and none but standard stock touring cars was admitted.
The route was from Mexico City to Cuernavaca and return, a distance of 100 miles. Five cars completed the circuit without making stops for water, tire trouble or motor difficulty. The five were the Durant, two Franklin, a Studebaker and a Styler, which is a European made car. The grand prize was awarded after one mile speed test participated in by the five winners and this was won by the Durant.
The road to Cuernavaca is a mountain highway with a number of 17 percent and 18 per cent grades, one of them 15 miles long, and continuously uphill.
In spite of unsettled conditions in Mexico, more than 50 Durants have been delivered in and about Mexico City recently. Contania Commercial Anahuac, S. A., Durant distributors at Mexico City, placed orders for 400 Duranta immediately following the race to Cuernavaca.
