UNION PREPARING FOR BIG PRODUCER With Oil Operators The United Oil Co.'s Hess No. 1 now drilling at 3100 feet has been in the oil sand for more than 500 feet and there is every reason to believe that this test well will make one of the biggest wells in the field. The oil sand was struck at 2600 feet and has continued practically unbroken for 500 feet. United Hess will prove up the southwest side of the Long Beach field for big production. The Cal-Mex Oil and Refining Co. continues to battle with the water in the Kirkpatrick well. A fourth cementing has just been done at 2980-4½. Vern Dumas is making every effort to bring into production a well that means much to the field and to his company. A lot of development has been hanging fire for months pending the outcome of the Cal-Mex. The excellent showing of light oil the well has made excludes any idea that the well is an edge well and contending with edge water. Interest in the Fischer well increases as the hole approaches the 4400 mark. At 4375 the well is showing a brown shale, a change from the gas sand took place at 4360. At times the well looks good, and again not so good. The prediction now is a small well neat the 4500 foot mark. New production at Long Beach is about to be delivered by the Holmes Oil Co. and the Union Oil Co. The Holmes Oil Co.'s No. 1 completed at 3185 has been bailed down and shows promise of making a 1000 barrel well. The Union Oil Co.'s Community No. 1 drilled to 3200 was given a chance to flow, failed to take it and is being put on the pump. The San Martinez Oil Co. after many and varied experiences has at last succeeded in getting one of its wells on clean oil production. Frye No. 1 completed at 3506 is on production making 300 barrels of clean oil 26 gravity. The Temescal Oil Co. has taken a prominent place in the development of the Long Beach field and CASEY THE COP WHY NOT EAT MORE FRUIT WHILE WELL! That there is a huge army of some 8,000,000 resident patents in the hospitals of the United States annually, who are continually being fed back to health and vigor, is the statement constrained in a recent report issued by the Modern Hospital Publishing company. The report should prove of interest to all dealers in foodstuffs who are not too busy feeding those customers who are perfectly well and healthy, because it is estimated that the average daily resident population of hospitals in this country is 1,250,000 people. According to the statement hospitals in the United States spend $188,951,000 for food annually. It was found a few years ago, that based upon the average purchases of hospitals and allied institutions, of oranges and lemons, the average hospital patient consumed 114 oranges and 60 lemons per year as compared with the per capita consumption of the population generally, of 43 oranges and 13 lemons at that time. The Western Pacific started drilling three years ago, had all the troubles cataloged in oildom and finally completed a producer at 2990. The Western Pacific Oil Co. is backed largely it is understood by moving picture capital. The Comanche Oil Co. has its Calkins No.1 ready to go on production at a depth of 4230 feet. The Comanche is endeavoring to duplicate the big well brought in by the St. Helens Petroleum some months ago on the Eggleston property. The Interstate Oil Co. will prove up the extreme western end of the Montebello field with a well on the Monterey Land Co.'s property. The Interstate well is located west of the Standard Oil Co.'s Howard-Smith 1. In the Puente Hills the Mahala Oil and Gas Co. is getting some excellent showings in its No.2 well at depths ranging from 5 to 6 hundred feet shallower than the test well No.1. At 2900 No.2 is showing better than No.1 did at the time it was put on production at 4010. No.1 is now redrilling and deepening and is giving a lot of promise at 4200 feet. The Jose Oil Co. succeeded in finding the leak in the casing at No.1, and has had the well passed for a production test by the State Dept.
