COUNTY CLUB PUTS OUT SAFETY 'DON'T'S'
While there are many things to tell a motorist to do with his car, it would seem to be more important to tell the "dont's". That is, if one is to judge by the list given out by the Automobile Club of Orange county in its effort to lower the number of Orange county accidents.
"While we could sit down and tell a man that the best thing to do was to secure a copy of the revised motor vehicle act and study it and so learn how to act while driving on the highway, it is much more simple and to the point to impress him with a few dont's," said A. S. Ralph, manager of the Automobile Club of Orange County.
Here are a few of the "Dont's" prepared by us for safeguarding traffic in Orange county:
1—Don't insist upon your legal right-of-way at an intersection at the expense of the safety of yourself, car and occupants.
2—Don't drive too close to the car ahead. He may stop without signaling.
3—Don't ever neglect to give signals when turning or stopping.
4—Don't fail to slow down at all intersections. It may save an accident.
5—Don't forget to always keep on your side of the road. This should be particularly observed on curves and at night-time. It is very dangerous to drive on the wrong side of the road at a curve, as the fellow who is on the right hand side is liable to suffer the consequences of your fault.
6—Keep on the right hand side of the road at all intersections.
7—Don't pass another car at an intersection.
8—Don't try to pass another car unless the road ahead is clear.
9—Don't take chances at railroad crossings. Slow up, always.
10—Don't get peevish at the motor policeman if he calls you to account. Remember he has an unpleasant job and is only doing his duty. He is sure to be trying to be free.
Follow these "Dont's" and it will
Stage in Rockies Uses Willys-Knight
Leo M. Wright, manager of the automobile stage line between Colorado Springs and Cripple Creek, high up in the Rockies, thinks the Willys-Knight sleeve valve motor is "it." Here is what he says about it, according to Curtis Edwards of the Mission Garage, distributor:
"After two years of constant service, we, who have operated them, and those who have made the trip with us, are unanimous in appreciation of the Willys-Knight. We are convinced that it is the only motor which could successfully perform this work. This opinion is based on the failure of some twelve other makes of cars in the same work.
Since January, 1927, we have placed seven of these cars in service, replacing entirely all previous equipment. The cars often have carried as much as $5,500 pounds of passengers and freight, many times bucking snowdrifts so high that they entirely covered the hood.
"We run these cars on railroad schedule, every day in the year, making two round trips a day. We have altered the original seven-passenger body so as to permit the carrying of ten passengers together with their baggage, as well as newspapers and express up to 300 pounds.
"The items of maintenance and depreciation are important to us. Here again the Willys-Knight has proved supreme. Stage No. 1—our first Willys-Knight—ran 97,000 miles at a mechanical expense of $149.80. Figure that one mile of this work is equivalent to three miles of ordinary road running, and you get 291,000 miles, a truer idea of what this record means.
"We have never had any spring repairs of any of the Willys-Knight cars and final that after two years of the hardest kind of use, the bodies, tops, and upholstering have kept pace with the wonderful performance of the motors."
If that testimony doesn't spell reliability and durability, Id like to comment on our assistant to the governor Southern Pacific dents at grade cruises due to carelessness drivers. At grade Southern Pacific dents ending Dec. automobiles were stroyed, 208 people injured.
RIGHT HAND SIDE IS LIABLE TO SURFER THE CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR FAILURE.
6—Keep on the right hand side of the road at all intersections.
7—Don’t pass another car at an intersection.
8—Don’t try to pass another car unless the road ahead is clear.
9—Don’t take chances at railroad crossings. Slow up, always.
10—Don’t get peevish at the motor policeman if he calls you to account. Remember he has an unpleasant job and is only doing his duty. He is sure to be trying to be free.
“Follow these ‘Don’ts’ and it will be easy for you to keep out of accidents thru your own fault. One ‘don’t’ that we should add is, ‘Don’t forget to watch out for the road hog and the speed king.’ These two cause more accidents than all else.”
SUCTION APPARATUS
Suction apparatus has been invented in Germany for filling barrels or bags with cement or other finely powdered materials, without dust flying to injure or annoy workmen.
MAN-POWER PLOW
Of European invention is a plow that does its work as the user alternately depresses pedals with his feet and moves a lever forward with his hands.
Chaparral, chemise and buck brush resist fire and are quick to send up new life after a forest conflagration. Brush is a veritable child of fire but young trees are killed.
FRANKLIN FACTORY HUMS THESE DAYS
On three days recently the Franklin Automobile Company received from dealers orders for June delivery aggregating 467 cars—almost 50 per cent of the month’s output.
The production schedule is being raised, and beginning May 22., the Franklin cars are being turned out at the rate of 14,000 per year.
The largest number of Franklin cars ever to be dispatched to the New York Metropolitan district in a single day, aggregating 60 in number and having a retail value of $160,000, was driven away from the Franklin factory on May 25. All the cars were placarded and attracted much attention all along the route. Practically every town in the Metropolitan district was represented in the driveway.

CAL. LICENSES NOT GOOD IN ALL STATES
Some states recognized the licenses of other states and some limit the time of visiting cars, after which licenses must be taken out. The states which reciprocate with California and require no licenses are: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Delaware, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland Massachusetts, Montana North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Virginia and Wisconsin.
The length of time allowed in other states is as follows: Arizona, 6 months; California, 3 months; Colorado, 20 days; Florida, 30 days; Georgia, 30 days; Illinois 60 days; Indiana, 60 days; Kansas, 30 days; Maine 30 days; Michigan, 90 days; Minnesota, 30 days; Mississippi 60 days; Nebraska, 30 days; Nevada 30 days; New Hampshire, 20 days; New Jersey, 15 days; New Mexico, 60 days; North Carolina, 60 days; Oregon, 30 days; Rhode Island, 100 days; Tennessee, 30 days; Utah, 30 days; Virginia, 14 days; Washington 90 days and Wyoming, 90 days.
CAREFUL CROSSING CAMPAIGN IS BEGUN
(Continued from Page 1) dentis intensive study are clear in the opinion that the prevention of such accidents is largely a matter of educating drivers of automobiles both as to the hazards and as to the necessity for exercising caution.
Commenting on this, R. J. Clancy, assistant to the general manager of the Southern Pacific, said: "Accidents at grade crossings on the Southern Pacific during the last four years ending Dec. 31, 1921, 2755 automobiles were damaged or destroyed, 208 people were killed and 921 injured.
STudebaker Big Six In Class by Itself
Read this "copy" received by Harry D. Riley, Northern Orange County distributor, and find out exactly what the Studebaker big six does and is:
The new Studebaker big six speedster fills the public desire for a four-passenger car of smart appearance, great power, long wheel base, speed and comfort.
The speedster has the same dependable chassis that made enthusiasts of 30,000 owners at a time when greater discretion was exercised in the selection of motor cars than at any previous period in motor car history. That approval of the big six was on the basis of sheer merit alone.
There’s an air of exclusiveness about the speedster that is comparable only to the very highest priced automobiles.
The completeness of the equipment and its many extraordinary features will strike instant favor. Notice the innovation in design of the rear seat with its dividing arm which insures positive riding comfort to both passengers.
Done in the recognized Studebaker blue with touches of gold striping on the jongres, the double bevel-edge body adds a dash of beauty to the long, graceful lines of the speedster. And, designed and built complete by Studebaker experts, the body is as good as the chassis.
The big six speedster, on the most talked-of chassis in the world today, sells for $1.985. f. o. b. factory. This includes all equipment as shown — trunk and truck rack; front and rear bumpers; disc wheels including two extra wheels with tires, one mounted on each running board.
HEMET MAN SAYS FAGEOL IS WONDER
Here’s what Vern Barger of Hemet thinks of the Fageol tractor, for which J. J. DeVeaux is distributor for Orange County:
"I use a furrowgator of my own pattern, which hangs on the back end of the tractor and extends 30 inches back and six and one-half feet wide, which allows me to back up to a flume, or, if stuck on a root or pipes. I can simply lift my tool and back out without unhooking the tool, and pulling it out from the rear.
"I find that by using a lever at the back of the tool I can keep the furrowgator in deep. I use three 14x16 Bull-tongue shovels and throw the dirt over the shovel into the furrow. This puts the water deep into the ground, away from evaporation, and leaves the dry soil on the surface for the dust mulch. I have removable shanks, and put my cultivator teeth on in a few minutes, on the same frame. This outfit complete cost me $100.00, including shovels.
"I only farm my own twenty acres, and find a tractor much better suited to my conditions than horses, for numerous reasons, but do think that every fruit farmer should keep a few cows for fertilizer for every farmer knows that they can pay their way from milk and butter."
To date, we have run 310 hours at a cost of 32 cents per hour not counting depreciation or investment. On the investment, 40 cents per hour covers everything.
"We have loosened one valve stem, not removed, one hour's time; tightened belt once; packed pump three times; refilled transmission twice; tightened one clutch once; repaired a loose condenser in the REO SCHOOL BUSSES FITTING THE WORK

Commenting on this, R. J. Clancy, assistant to the general manager of the Southern Pacific, said: "Accidents at grade crossings are largely due to carelessness on the part of drivers. At grade crossings on the Southern Pacific during the last four years ending Dec. 31, 1921, 2755 automobiles were damaged or destroyed, 208 people were killed and 921 injured.
"It is interesting and helpful to a solution of this problem to know the manner in which these accidents occurred; 1390 ran on tracks in front of train, indicating that many of them tried to beat train to the crossing, resulting in 185 fatalities and 569 injuries; 676 ran into the side of train instead of train into them, resulting in 13 deaths and 253 injuries; 327 stalled or died on track, mainly as a result of waiting until on or near track before shifting gears, resulting in 7 deaths and 41 injuries; 89 approached the track at a speed above the breaking power of their machine, were unable to stop and skidded into train, resulting in 17 injuries; 207 ran through and broke down crossing gates lowered to protect them from approaching train, the result of approaching crossing at speed above the breaking power of their machine or recklessly driving through gate lowered to protect them, resulting in 18 injuries; 20 ran down and injured crossing flagmen standing at their post of duty to the last minute warning them of an approaching train, resulting in two deaths and 15 injuries; 46 ran into cattleguards, warning signs, and other protective devices, resulting in one death and 8 injuries.
"The cause of these accidents is made clear by the manner in which they occurred. If 208 people were killed and 921 injured in a railroad accident it would be appalling to everyone. It is no less appalling when this aggregate is attained by compounding periodical results. The analyst clearly discerns the cause of these accidents to be carelessness which may be remedied by the exercise of proper judgment on the part of drivers of automobiles. In other words, before attempting to cross the tracks of a railroad, drivers of automobiles should stop, look in both directions and listen, and while waiting for train to clear a crossing where there is more than one track should make sure that a train is not approaching from the opposite direction on some other track. Such precaution as the most would rarely require a wait of more than 60 seconds."

REO SCHOOL BUSSES FITTING THE WORK
No single thing has played the important part shown in the constructive work of the motor bus in making possible full development of the outlying districts about this state without depriving the children of the full advantage of our school systems or subjecting their parents to hardships in obtaining these privileges as would have invariably been the case in the old days.
This is evident in every section of the state today. Since the creation of the world there has never been an essential such as the education of children; there is no tragedy that can befall a human being who must face the world that is worse than the lack of education. The automobile has enabled a quicker and more efficient way for citizens to carry out their duties toward the comin generation. Consolidation of rural districts, and the abandonment of the old style one-room one-teacher rural schools, is gaining added impetus with every day.
"The busses that are mounted on the Reo Speedwagon chassis have played a great part in this movement." "Children of the rural districts have been enabled to take full advantages of the schooling system with the coming of the motor bus. They are picked up in the morning a few minutes before school, right at their own front door steps, and brought home after the schoolday is finished and dropped in the same spot.
"The families in the oil fields, the farming districts, and other out of the way places are enabled to stay right with their work with never a fear that the youngsters will be without educational training, as if a troley line ran right in front of the house. This has been made possible by the school motor bus. Some months ago, when the first Reos were commissioned in this work, they were built with special bodies for safety and comfort and put into operation over the roughest of our country roads.
"We have loosened one valve stem, not removed, one hour's time; tightened belt once; packed pump three times; refilled transmission twice; tightened one clutch once; repaired a loose condenser in the ESSE
