Saturday, June 10, 1922 SPORT CASEY THE COP 600 FISTIC FANS AT ARENA RE-OPENING A big flock of fight fans, numbering perhaps 600 or 700 reopened the arena on the sugar factory grounds on No. Los Angeles-st last night. The bugs were well pleased with the arrangements made by Manager Billy ArnDley. The seats are graded so there is a good view of the ring from all directions, the lighting is excellent and the open top makes for fresh air. As to the bill last night, three towels were tossed in. In the main event, Webb McIntyre, of Philadelphia, who has been receiving considerable publicity in Los Angeles as a member of Jack Dempsey's stable, either has been over-touted or was suffering with buck fever last night, because he couldn't stand up and take 'em from Young Dudley, Anaheim's colored flash. The old towel was tossed in after the second round. Fans would have liked Dudley to have had a chance to get one, good square wack at him. In the semi-windup, Willie Jackson of Los Angeles was given the decision over Kid Louie of Placentia... Kid Leonard of Denver challenged the winner of the semi-finals. Willie Kelley threw in the towel after taking a few from Joe Chaney of Whittier. Chaney looked as if he would have put up a fight if Kelley had desired to reciprocate. Eddie Green, Los Angeles negro, who substituted for Young Burton, of the entire bill, gave the best evidence of a hankering to scrap. He knocked out Connie Hogan in the second but appeared to regret he hadn't prolonged the fun further. Baby Orton won his bout from Moody via the towel tossing route, the latter having left his wind at home. Paul Romero, a roly-poly Mexican, and Young Frankie, of Placentia, were given a draw in the first. PASADENA TO BRING BUNCH OF ROOTERS NEW TODAY FOR SALE—An extra good pair orchard mules. Cheap. WANTED—Post PASADENA TO BRING BUNCH OF ROOTERS Pasadena Elks will bring a big bunch of rooters with them Sunday for the game with Anaheim Elks on the local high school field. The following from the Pasadena Star-News may be of interest to local fans: "After a week's vacation the Pasadena Elks baseball team will travel to Anaheim and take on the Anaheim Elks baseball team next Sunday. The game will be played on the high school grounds at Anaheim, called at 2:30 p.m. This will be the last practice game before the opening of the Elks' Summer League, as the Elks League will open Sunday, June 18. "The Pasadena Elks will open their league schedule on the Brookside diamond with the Redondo Elks. Redondo will have a fast team in the Elks League this year and in fact all of the Elk teams this summer will be speedy ones. It will be the fastest semi-pro league that has ever been organized in So. Cal., and the fans will see some high class baseball." "On paper the Ventura Elks are going to have one of the strongest teams, as they are getting the best semi-pro talent that they can find to play there. At the present time they have about six professional ball players on their team that could hold their own on any coast league club. "The Anaheim Elks and the Pasadena Elks are in two different divisions. In the past two years these two teams have each won in their division and have played in the semifinals. Anaheim winning the finals each year. 'But it is going to be different this year,' says Manager L. G. Ury of Pasadena. "Long Beach Bills are going to give Anaheim a run for their money in their division this year, as the former have a much better ball team than they had last year; Riverside and San Bernardino Elks also are going to give Anaheim a run for their money. "The Pasadena Elks will leave the clubhouse, at 400 East Colorado-st at 10 o'clock Sunday omrning for Anaheim and they expect to take a large crowd with them, as these two teams always draw big crowds when they meet." MABEE TAKES OVER MATCH PROMOTION Roy Mabee, westside rancher, has taken over the management of his double wrestling match with Al Sparkes and Vic Bader at the Grand theatre next Tuesday evening, he announced today. Mabee was introduced to the big crowd of fistic fans at the arena of the Anaheim Athletic club last night. He got a big hand, evidencing his popularity here, but the fans apparently considered he had taken more of a mouthful than he can masticate in determining to pin Sparkes and Baden each twice to the mat in one hour. "I am going to put on this show myself and I will guarantee everybody will be satisfied," said Mabee today. Mabee announced a reduction in prices which should prove interesting to fans. All except ringside seats will be $1. Ringside chairs will be $1.50. Mabee is attempting to lineup an orchestra to prove funeral marches and other suitable music thru the various intermissions. As the result of consistent work-outs with his brother, Jack Mabee, the Montana cowboy, Roy looks to be ANAHEIM BOWLING TEAMS BREAK SAME Both Anaheim Elks' Bowling teams broke the same last night, winning one out of three. Santa Monica No. 1 played Anaheim No. 1 while Long Beach No. 2 played Anaheim No. 2. Both Anaheim teams were short regular players. However they kept trying all the time to get the odd game. Press Varner took brother Milt's place as captain of No. 2 and kept the old pop in the game. In this contest Yoern had a bad night and missed too many single pins. Guy Evans was the shining star, shooting a total of 597 wooden babies, an average of 197. With help, Guy should have won all three games. Capt. Mighty Johnson of No. 1 team was high in the other game, shooting 540. Next week No. 1 plays Glendale No. 1 at Glendale while No. 2 plays Glendale No. 2 at Glendale. The four bodies were the Tri-Counties Reofrestation Committee, represented by J. J. Dwyer of Anaheim; the Water Conservation Assn.; made up of water companies, municipal corporations etc. of Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties; the water conservation committee of the Associated Chambers; and the Farm Bureau. C. M. Hollingshead of Anaheim, chairman of the water conservation committee of the bureau, presided, and Floyd Scott, assistant farm advisor, acted as secretary. Decision to urge a committee of five to represent all the interests mentioned was reached after a prolonged discussion in which all the visible pros and cons of the subject were threshed out. Little unity of sentiment appeared to exist prior to the motion, put by H. H. Hale of Placentia, president of the Anaheim Union Water Company, in favor of the committee. It was declared that the committee was necessary, because the supervisors preferred not to act as a body on the previous request, while J. F. Ahlborn, Harry W. Lewis and H. H. Covell appeared before them, until it was evident that all parties were backing the county-wide conservation district project. Some 25 persons were present, including many of the leading water conservationists of the county. —Witman, Eyesight specialist. CALIFORNIA PAGE THREE FER HIM By H. M.
